SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre: Leonkoro Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Lion-hearted chamber revelation.\nBerlin’s Leonkoro Quartet arrives with the fearless intensity their Esperanto name promises – ‘lion-heart’ – and a reputation that has electrified the international chamber music world since their 2019 formation. Fresh from claiming top prizes at Wigmore Hall and earning Concertgebouw’s Young Talent Award\, these four musicians deliver performances that crackle with artistic risk-taking and profound musical intelligence. \nTheir Melbourne debut traces an emotional arc across three centuries of human expression. Henriëtte Bosmans’ String Quartet unveils the forgotten voice of a Dutch composer whose work deserves rediscovery\, while Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet sparkles with youthful exuberance and sophisticated craftsmanship. The evening culminates with Franz Schubert’s towering ‘Death and the Maiden’ – a work that transforms life’s deepest fears into transcendent beauty. \nThroughout this one-night-only performance\, the weight of daily existence lifts\, replaced by something far more essential; the connection between composer\, performer\, and listener that has sustained humanity for centuries.  \nCoached by chamber music legends from the Artemis Quartet and Alfred Brendel\, Leonkoro combines interpretive maturity with dynamic stage presence that makes every performance feel contemporary. \nMonday 04 May 2026 – 7:30pm \nDuration: 1 hour 50 mins (incl. interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nSingle Tickets: Premium $139\, A Reserve $119 ($99 Concession); B Reserve $99 ($79 Concession); C Reserve $79 \nUnder 40s  B & C Reserve $49

SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre & the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) Mostly Mozart – Mannheim to Paris
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s self-described best.\nMusicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)\, alongside director and ANAM horn alum Carla Blackwood\, present a morning of music that unites winds and strings. \nA 28-year-old Mozart considered the Quintet in E-flat one of his greatest works. This piece effortlessly balances wind timbres against piano in an ever changing sequence of melodic development. Written at the peak of his compositional powers\, this ever-popular work\, combining complexity with charming musical conversation\, radiates with an alchemy that is distinctly Mozart. \nThe exploration of Mozart’s great works continues in his Quintet for Horn and Strings\, which distinctly features just a single violin and cello\, along with two violas. Breaking the traditional string quartet format\, the addition of the two violas provides this stunning work with a blend of brightness and depth. This unique ensemble provides the perfect accompaniment to the star of the piece – the horn. \nReceiving long overdue recognition\, the 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc’s Sextet for winds and piano in C Minor is sandwiched between the two Mozart masters. Overflowing with warmth and appealing melodies\, Farrenc’s intimate 20-minute work is a perfect addition for a morning of music that will enliven the spirit. \nCarla Blackwood director/horn (ANAM Alum\, 2000); ANAM Musicians \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet in E-flat\, K.452 \nLouise Farrenc Sextet in C Minor\, Op.40 \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet for Horn and Strings in E-flat\, K.407 \nMorning Tea\nJoin us for a complimentary morning tea of coffee\, tea\, sweet treats and savoury delights from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 01 April 2026 – 11:00am \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Barton & Brodsky
DESCRIPTION:Ancient strings\, living spirit.\nWitness musical history as chamber music masters the Brodsky Quartet meet master yidaki artist William Barton to create a performance that revolutionises the idea of what a string quartet can become. \nIn this profound musical dialogue between traditions\, baroque precision meets ancient breath; European chamber music encounters First Nations wisdom. \nBarton’s yidaki doesn’t merely accompany the Brodsky’s pristine strings\, it converses with them\, in sonic dialogue spanning millennia. From Henry Purcell’s baroque geometries to Peter Sculthorpe’s dreamtime landscapes. From Leoš Janáček’s intimate confessions to new works born from Australia’s burning heart\, this program traces an extraordinary arc through time and culture. \nMusic’s deepest truths emerge when profound traditions meet as equals. Together\, the Brodsky Quartet and William Barton conjure moments of startling beauty where the ancient breath of the yidaki weaves through Stravinsky’s modernist fragments\, and where Andrew Ford’s Eden Ablaze emerges like smoke from a burning continent. \nWith the Brodsky’s 50-year legacy and legendary precision and Barton’s pioneering talents\, this is your chance to experience Australia’s musical soul in conversation and self-reflection\, from past to present. \nThis concert is supported by the British Council. \nBrodsky Quartet: Krysia Osostowicz violin; Ian Belton violin; Paul Cassidy viola; Jacqueline Thomas cello \nWilliam Barton didgeridoo \nHenry Purcell Fantasia in D minor\, Z.739 \nPeter Sculthorpe String Quartet No.11\, Jabiru Dreaming \nRobert Davidson Minjerribah \nLeoš Janáček String Quartet No.1\, The Kreutzer Sonata \nIgor Stravinsky Three Pieces for String Quartet – 1st Mov. ‘Dance’ \nAndrew Ford String Quartet No.7\, Eden Ablaze \nSalina Fisher Tōrino \nTraditional She moved through the fair \nWilliam Barton Square Circles Beneath the Red Desert Sand \nWednesday 25 February 2026 – 7:30pm \nDuration: 2 hours 30 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Quartz: Schubert's Death & the Maiden
DESCRIPTION:Quartz returns to perform one of the greatest chamber works of all time.\nThe fifth movement of Australian composer Richard Meale’s String Quartet No.2 has long had a life of its own. Dedicated to the recent loss of a dear friend\, Meale’s Cantilena Pacifica achieved stand-alone fame for its lyrical violin stretching mournfully over a gentle accompaniment. \nNamed after\, and taking inspiration from\, a song he had written many years earlier\, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden – a meditation on the fragility of mortality – is one of the composer’s most acclaimed works. \nWritten at a time when Schubert himself was unwell\, Death and the Maiden tells the story of a woman pleading with Death to spare her. Pulsing with intense emotion and drama\, the stormy passages and gentle melodies throughout remain proof of Schubert’s brilliant lyricism and provide an unforgettable listening experience \nQuartz\nKathryn Taylor violin\nEmily Beauchamp violin\nMerewyn Bramble viola\nZoe Wallace cello \nRichard Meale String Quartet No.2; V. Cantilena Pacifica \nFranz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor\, D 810\,  Death and the Maiden \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 6:00pm\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 8:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre & Australian National Academy of Music: Mostly Mozart – Eine kleine Nachtmusik
DESCRIPTION:The many moods of Mozart and Shostakovich take centre stage.\nOpening with unique brass arrangements of two of Mozart’s most profound moments – the Kyrie and Lacrimosa from his Requiem – this Wednesday morning performance begins with power and pathos. Intensities deepen as Shostakovich’s searing Chamber Symphony takes flight under the direction of ANAM’s Head of Violin Adam Chalabi. Inspired by his own String Quartet No.8\, Shostakovich’s deeply personal 25-minute work was written in just three days and is filled with haunting meditations on loss and survival. \nTo round out this hour-long expedition through the many moods of Mozart and Shostakovich\, ANAM Musicians present Mozart at his most delightful in Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. With melodies sparkling throughout the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\, the classical charm of this Mozart masterpiece is the perfect conclusion for a journey from the sacred to the secular; the tragic to the triumphant. \nMorning Tea \nJoin us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDates & Times\n\nWednesday 03 September 2025 – 11:00am \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Nobuyuki Tsujii
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary artist whose talent transcends the senses and stirs the heart and soul.\nJapanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii (Nobu) is the ‘definition of virtuosity’ (The Observer). Blind from birth\, Nobu has transformed a story of darkness into a story of determination and inspiration. He is internationally celebrated as a shining light who exemplifies time and time again that music is not only a universal language\, but a multi-sensory experience that possesses the power to enliven hearts\, minds\, and souls.’ \nSince winning the joint Gold Medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009\, Nobu’s career has soared. This year’s performance season commenced with a sold-out appearance at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms and includes a welcome return to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Tsinandali Festival. \nIn B:Music’s recent audio-described short documentary film\, Nobu’s story is brought to life through interviews\, videos from the family archive\, rehearsal\, and concert footage. SUMMARY:Paul Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Explore the enigmatic genius of Schubert with Paul Lewis.\nIllustrious English pianist Paul Lewis returns to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage and transports audiences to the timeless world of Franz Schubert. \nReturning to complete his exploration of the composer’s great sonatas – this time focusing on the final three. These compositions weren’t always viewed as masterpieces\, instead they laid dormant for a decade following Schubert’s death. It wasn’t until the centenary of his passing\, well into the 20th century\, that public opinion on the breadth and dramatic expansiveness of Schubert’s final three piano works began to change. \nNow\, well into the 21st century\, Paul Lewis’s return to Melbourne follows two critically acclaimed performances in 2023 where he left audiences ‘in no doubt that he is probably the most virtuosic interpreter of Schubert today’ (Classic Melbourne). \nCommencing the evening of soul-stirring music with Schubert’s Piano Sonata No.19 in C minor\, Lewis’s artistry unveils the complex emotions and dramatic contrasts inherent in Schubert’s work. The composer’s genius continues to come to life as Lewis unravels the intricate melodies that define Schubert’s Piano Sonata No.20 in A; a captivating reminder of Schubert’s timeless allure. And finally\, Piano Sonata No.21 in B-flat\, the pinnacle of Schubert’s piano compositions. This intricate work unfolds like a musical odyssey\, and under Paul Lewis’s expertise\, becomes a transcendent experience. \n\nTuesday 6 February 2024\, 7.30pm;  MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours 30 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $102 ($87 Concession); B reserve $87 ($67 Concession); C reserve $67
