DESCRIPTION:Revel in this performance of musical risk-taking.\nA morning of musical experimentation awaits as percussionists and their piano contemporaries from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) perform a selection of works by Mozart and Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti. \nFor as long as there has been music\, there have been composers experimenting and taking risks throughout their creative process. In the case of Mozart\, many of his works deemed ‘experimental’ have stood the test of time. In his Adagio for Glass Harmonica\, Mozart uses the instrument’s unique timbres to create an otherworldly sound – a sound Paganini hailed as a ‘celestial voice’. \nInvented by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century\, the glass harmonica requires virtuosic precision and gentle care from the performers as they rub their wet fingers on the edges of glass bowls to produce ethereal and haunting tones. \nHighly celebrated for his avant-garde music-making\, the genius of György Ligeti bookends this performance of Mozart’s most demanding repertoire. First\, the boundaries of classical music are pushed to the limits with the intricate melodies and unconventional harmonies of his Chamber Concerto. The first of these quartets is a perfectly proportioned work of beauty and elegance\, featuring the four instrumentalists as soloists exchanging an intimate dialogue that is clear and melodious. \nBorn into a wealthy Berlin family\, Mendelssohn’s parents encouraged him to spend several years abroad when he turned twenty. These were busy years for him; his performing and conducting careers blossomed. He is regularly engaged with leading European ensembles including Les Arts Florissants\, Vox Luminis\, Profeti della Quinta\, Le Miroir de Musique\, and has appeared with groups such as Huelgas Ensemble\, La Cetra\, Voces Suaves\, Göttingen Baroque Orchestra\, Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra\, and Bern Vocale. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon invites the listener to experience the emotion\, virtuosity and vitality of secular and sacred vocal music of the early Italian Baroque\, which\, hundreds of years later\, still has the power to enthrall and delight. \nAt the turn of the 17th century\, newfound approaches to musical expression exploded into every European musical community. At the heart of this movement were the courts of great Italian families such as the Medici\, Sforza\, Gonzaga\, Pamhpili\, and Colonna. To enthrall their patrons\, court musicians broke many of the formal constraints that had bound them throughout the Renaissance and extracted every ounce of expressive possibility from ancient formulae. \nComposer-performers such as Caccini and Frescobaldi used popular musical forms as vehicles for their intellectual prowess\, transforming them with unexpected harmonic treatments\, all with the aim of moving the emotions of the audience\, who just like today\, were delighted by songs that articulated the human condition\, in particular the pleasures and pains of love.\nWell-known madrigals were adorned with breathtakingly virtuosic ornamentation showing not only the compositional facility of the performer but their skill in the ‘cantar della gorgia’\, a type of singing where rapid articulation in the throat enables great agility and speed. \nIn the religious sphere\, these new expressive approaches were used just as effectively. Popular secular songs were appropriated for religious settings and overlaid with spectacular new melodic treatments. Bach\, J.C. Bach\, C.P.E. Bach and Princess Anna Amalia. Reinventing their virtuosity and lyricism\, Duo Eclettico present the world premiere of these arrangements for saxophone and piano. \nThe daughter of Frederick William I\, Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia was a superb composer and writer and was Carl Philipp Emanuel (CPE) Bach’s first royal patron. She was also the patron of the ‘German Sappho’\, poet Anna Luisa Karsch\, who provided the libretti for several of CPE’s vocal works. Anna Amalia secretly married one of her brother’s soldiers\, and was banished to a convent\, where she continued to write.
