SUMMARY:Speak Percussion: Pigeons
DESCRIPTION:Clay shooting—with percussionists in the firing lines.\nAnd… pull! \nPigeons is a clay shooting event\, but the birds are the musicians and pigeons are the ammo. Three robotic trap machines take centre stage. In unrelenting\, symphonic\, patterns\, they hurl hundreds of fluorescent clay targets at a wall of suspended\, resonant percussive objects. The musicians duck\, flap\, glide and slide among the projectiles\, in a frantic search for safety. Glorious music rings out—fragile\, violent\, poetic and heroic. It’s percussionist vs pigeon. Human vs machine. \nThe idea was hatched by Speak Percussion’s Co-Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti\, with a bunch of risk-taking collaborators who’ve been working to redefine the potential of percussion since the turn of the millennium.  Will their plan present a logical endpoint to our algorithmically massaged future? Or lead us on a path to broken bones? Either way\, it’ll be epic. \nSensory Warnings \nFlashing lights\, Moving lights\, Loud sounds. This performance contains heightened audio-visual content. There is unpredictable sound and visual projection throughout which may quickly change in volume\, tone\, brightness\, and colour. Sound sensitive audience members are encouraged to bring headphones. Earplugs available at the venue. There are no dominant light flashes or colour changes which occur more frequently than 3 per second. \nSaturday 14 June 2025 – 7:30pm  –  Duration: 1 hour 15 mins. Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nPlease note\, the performance of Pigeons on Friday 13 June will no longer go ahead. \nMelbourne Recital Centre \nTICKETS: Standard $69\, Concession $59

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet Flinders Quartet at Montsalvat – Paavali
DESCRIPTION:Paavali Jumppanen joins Flinders Quartet for their 25th anniversary\, featuring works by Bacewicz\, Shostakovich\, and Beethoven.\nMelbourne has been lucky to have extraordinary pianist\, Paavali Jumppanen\, in our musical community as Artistic Director at ANAM. He joins Flinders Quartet in the opening concert program of their 25th anniversary season for not just one piano quintet but two! Graznya Bacewicz was an accomplished pianist and violin virtuoso whose deep knowledge of the instruments as a performer shows itself in her writing. Her piano quintet is evidence of her immaculate skill and mediates between folkloric impulses and the rigour of classical principles\, creating a sound world which is constantly delivering moments of unexpected beauty. \nShostakovich was so busy performing his popular new piano quintet on tour with his friends of the Beethoven Quartet following its premiere in November 1940 that he hardly had time to compose for six months. Flinders Quartet sets up this wonderful piano feast with Beethoven’s short but powerful Op.95 F minor quartet ‘Serioso’\, written at a time of personal despair and the only one he named himself. \nElizabeth Sellars violin\nWilma Smith violin\nHelen Ireland viola\nZoe Knighton cello\nPaavali Jumppanen piano \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLudwig Van Beethoven String Quartet No.11 in F minor\, Op.95 \nGraznya Bacewicz Piano Quintet No.1 \nDmitri Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G minor\, Op.57 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 18 May 2025 – 2:30pm \nMontsalvat \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Freiburg Baroque Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Freiburg Baroque Orchestra returns for an exhilarating exploration through the Baroque and Classical eras.\nLed by dynamic musical director Gottfried von der Goltz\, this first of two performances opens with Bach’s spirited Symphony in G minor\, setting the stage with its vibrant energy. \nImmediately following\, the Orchestra present a masterful mix of Mozart works; all fan-favourites from the great composer’s cannon. SUMMARY:Robin Fox presents Triptych
DESCRIPTION:A hypnotic fusion of high-art techno\, sonic mass\, and buzzing electronica.\nStep into the immersive world of Triptych\, the award-winning work from visionary Australian audio-visual (AV) artist and composer Robin Fox. Described as an ‘audio-visual space-time carving\,’ Triptych merges Fox’s two creative passions – electronic music and audio-visual mechanical synaesthesia.
