It contemplates the vast conglomerations of plastic trash circulated in the world’s ocean currents\, eventually ground into toxic fragments that sediment on remote islands and within the fish we eat. Liza has made a music out of relics of the past – a coarse sampling of ‘extinction events’ ranging from the spectral echoes of a creaking 19th century piano music\, to a faulty transcription of a recording of the last mating call ever heard of the now extinct Kauai O’o bird. \nMary Bellamy’s Enveloped uses two seemingly quite different instruments\, the cello and contrabass recorder\, to forge a new whole\, a new sonic identity. The work is made up of imaginary dialogues and points of connection and disconnection. \nThe piano concerto conjures images of white tie and tails\, it conjures images of Brahms\, maybe of Schumann or Tchaikovsky. This is not that! Following a break of ten years from composing string quartets\, Haydn describes his Op.33 set as having a ‘new and special’ style. The key of B minor itself is unusual – a choice that signals the exploratory and unconventional direction of Haydn’s quartet writing in the 1780s. \nMendelssohn’s sixth and final string quartet was composed just two months before his death in 1847. DESCRIPTION:Five emerging composers respond to Beethoven 200 years on\nAbout the concert\nThe Flinders Quartet performance in Primrose Potter Salon sees the commissioning of five emerging composers to write vignettes in response to Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue\, creating contemporary relevance for this seminal work and ensuring that generations to come have an awareness of Beethoven’s string quartet canon. \nBy pairing Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue with five\, short works\, Flinders Quartet present a new way of listening to the revolutionary composition with a renewed perspective. \nBeethoven’s Opus 18 comprises his first works in the string quartet genre and his development of one small motif which was revolutionary in compositional terms. Haydn was able to establish himself securely in this prestigious artistic centre – a truly fruitful endeavour. \nHenry Purcell’s Fantasia in B flat was originally scored for four viols in 1680\, but their performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents a counterpoint\, lovingly encased in the modern sound world of the piano trio. \nFinishing on Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet of 1904. An early work from one of England’s most recognisable composers\, the quintet makes full use of the timbral possibilities of a double bass. DESCRIPTION:About the artists\nEnsemble Gombert is Melbourne’s outstanding chamber choir\, renowned for its pure intonation and historical approach to choral sound and style. Named after Nicolas Gombert\, the Ensemble specialises in a cappella performance of Franco-Flemish music of the High Renaissance. \nAbout the concert\nThomas Tallis and his pupil William Byrd are the undisputed masters of Late Renaissance music in England. Though Masters of the Chapel Royal\, both remained devout Roman Catholics throughout their lives. \nThis program culminates in the most famous English choral work of the sixteenth century\, Tallis’s forty-voice setting of Spem in alium nunquam habui. While the date and occasion of the motet’s composition remain a mystery\, dates from 1556 to 1573 have been conjectured\, along with possible connections with the Duke of Norfolk or the Earl of Arundel. \nThe technical mastery and architectural brilliance it exhibits have never been in doubt. This is one of music’s most dazzling masterpieces.
