SUMMARY:The Spooky Men's Chorale
DESCRIPTION:Experience a performance as spooky as it is striking.\nFormed in 2001\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast\, rumbling\, steam powered and black clad behemoth\, seemingly accidentally capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment. Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect subwoofer-rattling boofchord\, the Spooky Men seek to commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male armed only with their voices\, a sly collection of hats and facial hair\, and a twinkle in the eye. \nAbout the concert\nIn this delicious live performance\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale dig deep into their multifarious themes: Georgian male polyphony; a running joke on man as a vast\, oblivious useless object; whispers of clown\, bouffon and Monty Python; and forays into massively pleasurable grunting tribalism. \nAudiences are invited to first joyously endure a wall of mansound\, then laugh stupidly\, before venturing into areas of great tenderness. It is not so much comedic as hilarious\, not so much shimmeringly perfect as human in a very deeply resonant way. \n\nFriday 28 July 2023 7.30pm  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $60 ($50 Concession)

SUMMARY:Ziggy & Miles: Sidekick
DESCRIPTION:A musical exploration of family dynamics.\nTitled after the work of the same name\, this concert is a reflection of Ziggy and Miles’ history and brotherly dynamic both on stage and off. Written for the brothers\, Katie Jenkins’ Sidekick intentionally inflates and satires their relationship with musical bickering and sparring virtuosity. \nAbout the concert\nTo open and close the performance\, the brothers perform two works instrumental in developing their teenage love for the guitar duo\, Paulo Bellinati’s fiery Jongo\, and Radamés Gnattali’s Suite Retratos\, both championed by the Assad and Grigoryan brothers. \nThe pieces in between include Ziggy and Miles’ own arrangement of Debussy’s timeless Suite bergamasque\, and a world premiere by local composer Ken Murray’s Trin Warren Tam-boore titled after the wetlands of the same name; a name which was given by the Wurundjeri people meaning Bellbird Waterhole. \n\nFriday 28 July 2023 7pm;  MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Kung Fu Cellist – extra/ordinary
DESCRIPTION:A musical journey that wanders away from the beaten path.\n‘Kung fu doesn’t mean fighting skills\, kung fu means a skilled person; so you can find kung fu wherever you look – as long as you know how to look.’ Master Darryl Moy\, Chief Instructor of Tse Qigong Centre \nChinese-born artist Yelian He (aka the Kung Fu Cellist) knows firsthand the type of focus and discipline that’s required to endure the rigours of both kung fu training and cello. To master either artform takes more than physical prowess; it takes one’s entire character and being. \nTogether with saxophonist Joseph Lallo\, their performance in Primrose Potter Salon explores the art of finding a skill that you love and forging your own path in practice. Joseph Lallo is an acclaimed performer\, conductor\, and visionary curator of the classical music concert experience\, the perfect musical companion for Yelian to join forces with. \nAbout the concert\nThis uncommon pairing of instruments will explore the theme behind the central works in the program. Swedish composer\, bassist and cellist Svante Henryson’s Suite Off Pist explores challenges faced when wandering away from the beaten path and having to carve your own path in the snow. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: 12 Horn Duos\, KV487 (Selections) \nJean-Philippe Rameau arr. – Svante Henryson: Three Pieces from Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin \nSvante Henryson: Suite Off Pist \nStuart Greenbaum: Northern Lights \nGuillaume Connesson: Disco-Toccata \n\nTuesday 13 June 2023 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Divisi Chamber Singers: The Turn
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the intrigue of madrigals.\nDivisi is a youth-led not-for-profit organisation that supports early-career creative artists. Divisi strives to break down established norms of classical music through commissioning and performing innovative and creative works and projects. Their recent program ‘Compose Queer’ was released to wide acclaim and led to the release of the first ever complete album of Australian classical music by queer composers\, entitled Spectrum. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon explores the intrigue of madrigals\, taking six narrators’ individual interpretations and coordinating them into a beautiful\, cohesive story. Divisi Chamber Singers will take four hundred years of madrigal storytelling tradition and weave masterworks with contemporary comparisons. Ben Rowarth’s The Turn\, an Australian premiere\, gives further context to Monteverdi’s Lamento D’Arianna. Gavin Bryars’ madrigals shed more light on ancient poetry with intricate contemporary harmony. \nChallenging its singers’ virtuosic abilities\, Divisi seeks to provide audiences with an experience of storytelling that transcends time and style\, telling ancient stories in modern ways. \n\nThursday 8 June 2023 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)

SUMMARY:ELISION – Extinction Events & Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Ecological listening to more-than-human worlds.\n‘Humans are tuned for relationship. The eyes\, the skin\, the tongue\, ears\, and nostrils—all are gates where our body receives the nourishment of others. This landscape of shadowed voices\, these feathered bodies and tumbling streams–these breathing shapes are our family.’ – David Abram \nELISION is celebrated for its unique instrumentation\, close and long-term artistic relationships with composers\, its virtuosity and the deep commitment of its musicians to renegotiate and re-invent performance practice and technique. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall as part of New Music Days 2023 presents virtuosic new sounds from one of the world’s leading new music groups. Featuring works by the inimitable Liza Lim\, Mary Bellamy and Aaron Cassidy\, this thought-provoking program explores pertinent environmental issues of our time\, celebrating the world premiere of Aaron Cassidy’s new piano concerto. \nLiza Lim’s composition Extinction Events & Dawn Chorus is a major Australian work that has resonated decisively with ensembles and audiences all over the world. It contemplates the vast conglomerations of plastic trash circulated in the world’s ocean currents\, eventually ground into toxic fragments that sediment on remote islands and within the fish we eat. Liza has made a music out of relics of the past – a coarse sampling of ‘extinction events’ ranging from the spectral echoes of a creaking 19th century piano music\, to a faulty transcription of a recording of the last mating call ever heard of the now extinct Kauai O’o bird. \nMary Bellamy’s Enveloped uses two seemingly quite different instruments\, the cello and contrabass recorder\, to forge a new whole\, a new sonic identity. The work is made up of imaginary dialogues and points of connection and disconnection. \nThe piano concerto conjures images of white tie and tails\, it conjures images of Brahms\, maybe of Schumann or Tchaikovsky. This is not that! Scored for an unusual ensemble including recorders\, harp and a pedal steel guitar Aaron Cassidy’s concerto has been especially written for solo pianist Alex Waite who brings iridescent brilliance to creating this world premiere. \nPost-Concert Talk\nPlease join Liza Lim\, Aaron Cassidy and Mary Bellamy for a post-concert talk from 9.20pm – 9.15pm. \n\nThursday 20 April 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $30 ($20 Concession) \nNew Music Days Three-Concert Package\nStandard $60 ($45 Concession)

SUMMARY:Sonya Lifschitz – Creative Women
DESCRIPTION:A musical ode to women who have shaped our world.\nFollowing on from the success of their acclaimed work Stalin’s Piano\, Sonya Lifschitz and Robert Davidson deliver Creative Women — an audio-visual epic for solo piano and video that tells stories of female artists\, scientists and politicians through the words of the subjects made musical. \nA musical portrait gallery of creators spanning a millennium\, Creative Women weaves together archival audio\, narrative and music in a tapestry of stories celebrating discovery. The voices of Frida Kahlo\, Marie Curie\, Nina Simone\, Patti Smith\, Clara Schumann’s students\, Aunty Delmae Barton\, Malouma\, Greta Thunberg\, Rachel Carsons and other adventurers are joined by Sonya’s own narrative voice — including a conversation with her grandmother and great aunt about their escape from Kyiv as Nazi bombs fell. These are stories of people bringing their fullest selves to the challenges of convention\, danger\, inertia and prejudice. \nCreative Women is an exploration of the ever-simmering tension between courage and doubt\, triumph and failure\, tenderness and fierceness. \n\nWednesday 8 March 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $55 ($45 Concession)

Known for her captivating stage presence\, her enthusiasm and virtuosity are ever-present elements in her live concerts. \nAbout the concert\nHer performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents Fantasy & Design – a program exploring two seemingly opposing concepts. A common thread throughout each piece\, Fantasie is a composition free in form and inspiration. Its counterpart\, designed compositions following clear rules\, which have often evolved from improvisational practice\, is another recurring motif. These two concepts unite and challenge one another\, offering an artistic and musical antithesis. \nAnna curates a captivating and entertaining time travel through 800 years of recorder repertoire performed by one of the foremost recorder soloists of recent times\, traversing music from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century. \n\nMonday 23 January 2023 6pm; MRC Primrose Potter salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)

SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet – Perpetual Motion
DESCRIPTION:A stirring display of emotion and musicality.\nAbout the artists\nAffinity Quartet represents the next generation of Australia’s chamber music stars\, having developed its craft in Europe to critical acclaim. It brings home an inspired approach to music-making\, matched by its adventurous spirit as a string quartet for and of today. \nAbout the concert\nAffinity Quartet opens their program with Haydn’s 31st String Quartet\, the Op.33 No.1 in B minor. Following a break of ten years from composing string quartets\, Haydn describes his Op.33 set as having a ‘new and special’ style. The key of B minor itself is unusual – a choice that signals the exploratory and unconventional direction of Haydn’s quartet writing in the 1780s. \nMendelssohn’s sixth and final string quartet was composed just two months before his death in 1847. In this 30 minute work\, subtitled Requiem for Fanny\, Mendelssohn turns to the intimacy of string quartet writing to grapple with the sudden death of his only sister and closest confidante\, producing one of his most musically incisive and arresting works. \nAustralian composer and violist Matt Laing\, describes his new work for Affinity Quartet as ‘an abstract still life in perpetual motion\, where even the smallest\, stillest things have a hyperactive inner life’. \n\nThursday 17 November 2022 6pm; Melbourne recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Beethoven and the Vignettes
DESCRIPTION:Five emerging composers respond to Beethoven 200 years on\nAbout the concert\nThe Flinders Quartet performance in Primrose Potter Salon sees the commissioning of five emerging composers to write vignettes in response to Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue\, creating contemporary relevance for this seminal work and ensuring that generations to come have an awareness of Beethoven’s string quartet canon. \nBy pairing Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue with five\, short works\, Flinders Quartet present a new way of listening to the revolutionary composition with a renewed perspective. \nBeethoven’s Opus 18 comprises his first works in the string quartet genre and his development of one small motif which was revolutionary in compositional terms. This same idea is connected to the task ascribed to the five emerging composers\, 200 years on. \nMonday 14 November 2022 11am & 6pm; Melbourne Recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) \nTickets: Standard $40 ($29 Concession)

SUMMARY:Firebird Trio – London Calling
DESCRIPTION:A captivating musical snapshot of London spanning three centuries.\n\n\n\n\nFirebird Trio has performed nationwide to critical acclaim\, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes its name\, bringing energy\, colour and splendour to their live experiences. A city renowned for its artistic wealth\, London serves as inspiration for Firebird Trio in this captivating musical snapshot spanning three centuries. \nAbout the concert\nBeginning with Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio in A\, the piece reveals the energy and optimism of his time in London at the behest of Johann Salomon\, the German violinist and impresario. Haydn was able to establish himself securely in this prestigious artistic centre – a truly fruitful endeavour. \nHenry Purcell’s Fantasia in B flat was originally scored for four viols in 1680\, but their performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents a counterpoint\, lovingly encased in the modern sound world of the piano trio. \nFinishing on Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet of 1904. An early work from one of England’s most recognisable composers\, the quintet makes full use of the timbral possibilities of a double bass. Rich with folk themes\, the hallmarks of Vaughan Williams personal style are brought to life in an enigmatic and powerful way. \nFirebird Trio welcome guest artists Simon Oswell\, Stuart Riley and Rhodri for the ‘Vaughan Williams Quintet’. \n\nWednesday 9 November 2022 6pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Ensemble Gombert – Tallis & Byrd
DESCRIPTION:About the artists\nEnsemble Gombert is Melbourne’s outstanding chamber choir\, renowned for its pure intonation and historical approach to choral sound and style. Named after Nicolas Gombert\, the Ensemble specialises in a cappella performance of Franco-Flemish music of the High Renaissance. \nAbout the concert\nThomas Tallis and his pupil William Byrd are the undisputed masters of Late Renaissance music in England. Though Masters of the Chapel Royal\, both remained devout Roman Catholics throughout their lives. \nThis program culminates in the most famous English choral work of the sixteenth century\, Tallis’s forty-voice setting of Spem in alium nunquam habui. While the date and occasion of the motet’s composition remain a mystery\, dates from 1556 to 1573 have been conjectured\, along with possible connections with the Duke of Norfolk or the Earl of Arundel. \nThe technical mastery and architectural brilliance it exhibits have never been in doubt. This is one of music’s most dazzling masterpieces. Ensemble Gombert is joined by friends and former members to present this work as it was originally intended. \n\nMonday 7 November 2022 7.30pm; MRC Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $55 ($45 Concession)
