SUMMARY:International Classics: Ilya Gringolts and Aura Go
DESCRIPTION:Watch as the violin virtuoso and piano prodigy join forces.\nFeted for his effortless renditions of the otherwise impossible – from Paganini and Locatelli to Brett Dean – Ilya’s performances and recordings have established him as one of the quintessential violin virtuosi of our time. He has performed as soloist with the world’s leading orchestras\, including a recent collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. \nPianist Aura Go joins Ilya for the first time since collaborating at the 2016 Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland. Their shared passion for contemporary music unites them here in the Australian premiere of modern master Wolfgang Rihm’s Phantom und Eskapade\, dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter. \nRihm’s invocation of the fantastical alludes to the Schumann sonata and its preoccupations with imagination and myth. The Mozart sonata will unveil the crystalline sounds of Ilya’s Stradivarius violin. \n\nTuesday 19 September 2023 7.30pm     MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $99 ($87 Concession); B reserve $85 ($67 Concession); C reserve $64\nD reserve $49

SUMMARY:Inventi Ensemble – Art of Fugue
DESCRIPTION:Experience the intricacies of Bach’s masterpiece.\nInventi Ensemble are a leading force in Australian chamber music. SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet: Infinite Affinities
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Melbourne ensemble taking the world by storm.\nAffinity Quartet represents the next generation of Australia’s chamber music stars\, having developed its craft in Europe to critical acclaim. It brings home an inspired approach to music-making\, matched by its adventurous spirit as a string quartet for and of today. \nAbout the concert\nFollowing their recent 2nd prize award at the 2023 Mozart International String Quartet Competition Salzburg\, Affinity Quartet return to the Primrose Potter Salon for a program featuring two seminal string quartets. \nOpening with Haydn’s String Quartet Op.50\, No.5 ‘Dream’\, this work beautifully showcases the dance between violin\, viola and cello. Beethoven’s String Quartet No.11 however\, was considered an experiment on compositional techniques of the time with the composer himself rumoured to believe it too extreme for audience consumption\, quoted as saying ‘[the piece] is never to be performed in public.’ \nSandwiched between these two great and vastly different works is the world premiere of a piece that brings together both the progressive and popular elements of string quartet composition: Tom Misson’s Melbourne Recital Centre and the University of Melbourne commissioned Infinite Affinities. \n\nSaturday 29 July 2023 7pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:The Spooky Men's Chorale
DESCRIPTION:Experience a performance as spooky as it is striking.\nFormed in 2001\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast\, rumbling\, steam powered and black clad behemoth\, seemingly accidentally capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment. Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect subwoofer-rattling boofchord\, the Spooky Men seek to commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male armed only with their voices\, a sly collection of hats and facial hair\, and a twinkle in the eye. \nAbout the concert\nIn this delicious live performance\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale dig deep into their multifarious themes: Georgian male polyphony; a running joke on man as a vast\, oblivious useless object; whispers of clown\, bouffon and Monty Python; and forays into massively pleasurable grunting tribalism. \nAudiences are invited to first joyously endure a wall of mansound\, then laugh stupidly\, before venturing into areas of great tenderness. It is not so much comedic as hilarious\, not so much shimmeringly perfect as human in a very deeply resonant way. \n\nFriday 28 July 2023 7.30pm  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $60 ($50 Concession)

SUMMARY:Ziggy & Miles: Sidekick
DESCRIPTION:A musical exploration of family dynamics.\nTitled after the work of the same name\, this concert is a reflection of Ziggy and Miles’ history and brotherly dynamic both on stage and off. Written for the brothers\, Katie Jenkins’ Sidekick intentionally inflates and satires their relationship with musical bickering and sparring virtuosity. \nAbout the concert\nTo open and close the performance\, the brothers perform two works instrumental in developing their teenage love for the guitar duo\, Paulo Bellinati’s fiery Jongo\, and Radamés Gnattali’s Suite Retratos\, both championed by the Assad and Grigoryan brothers. \nThe pieces in between include Ziggy and Miles’ own arrangement of Debussy’s timeless Suite bergamasque\, and a world premiere by local composer Ken Murray’s Trin Warren Tam-boore titled after the wetlands of the same name; a name which was given by the Wurundjeri people meaning Bellbird Waterhole. \n\nFriday 28 July 2023 7pm;  MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:ELISION – Extinction Events & Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Ecological listening to more-than-human worlds.\n‘Humans are tuned for relationship. The eyes\, the skin\, the tongue\, ears\, and nostrils—all are gates where our body receives the nourishment of others. This landscape of shadowed voices\, these feathered bodies and tumbling streams–these breathing shapes are our family.’ – David Abram \nELISION is celebrated for its unique instrumentation\, close and long-term artistic relationships with composers\, its virtuosity and the deep commitment of its musicians to renegotiate and re-invent performance practice and technique. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall as part of New Music Days 2023 presents virtuosic new sounds from one of the world’s leading new music groups. Featuring works by the inimitable Liza Lim\, Mary Bellamy and Aaron Cassidy\, this thought-provoking program explores pertinent environmental issues of our time\, celebrating the world premiere of Aaron Cassidy’s new piano concerto. \nLiza Lim’s composition Extinction Events & Dawn Chorus is a major Australian work that has resonated decisively with ensembles and audiences all over the world. It contemplates the vast conglomerations of plastic trash circulated in the world’s ocean currents\, eventually ground into toxic fragments that sediment on remote islands and within the fish we eat. Liza has made a music out of relics of the past – a coarse sampling of ‘extinction events’ ranging from the spectral echoes of a creaking 19th century piano music\, to a faulty transcription of a recording of the last mating call ever heard of the now extinct Kauai O’o bird. \nMary Bellamy’s Enveloped uses two seemingly quite different instruments\, the cello and contrabass recorder\, to forge a new whole\, a new sonic identity. The work is made up of imaginary dialogues and points of connection and disconnection. \nThe piano concerto conjures images of white tie and tails\, it conjures images of Brahms\, maybe of Schumann or Tchaikovsky. This is not that! Scored for an unusual ensemble including recorders\, harp and a pedal steel guitar Aaron Cassidy’s concerto has been especially written for solo pianist Alex Waite who brings iridescent brilliance to creating this world premiere. \nPost-Concert Talk\nPlease join Liza Lim\, Aaron Cassidy and Mary Bellamy for a post-concert talk from 9.20pm – 9.15pm. \n\nThursday 20 April 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $30 ($20 Concession) \nNew Music Days Three-Concert Package\nStandard $60 ($45 Concession)

SUMMARY:Sonya Lifschitz – Creative Women
DESCRIPTION:A musical ode to women who have shaped our world.\nFollowing on from the success of their acclaimed work Stalin’s Piano\, Sonya Lifschitz and Robert Davidson deliver Creative Women — an audio-visual epic for solo piano and video that tells stories of female artists\, scientists and politicians through the words of the subjects made musical. \nA musical portrait gallery of creators spanning a millennium\, Creative Women weaves together archival audio\, narrative and music in a tapestry of stories celebrating discovery. The voices of Frida Kahlo\, Marie Curie\, Nina Simone\, Patti Smith\, Clara Schumann’s students\, Aunty Delmae Barton\, Malouma\, Greta Thunberg\, Rachel Carsons and other adventurers are joined by Sonya’s own narrative voice — including a conversation with her grandmother and great aunt about their escape from Kyiv as Nazi bombs fell. These are stories of people bringing their fullest selves to the challenges of convention\, danger\, inertia and prejudice. \nCreative Women is an exploration of the ever-simmering tension between courage and doubt\, triumph and failure\, tenderness and fierceness. \n\nWednesday 8 March 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $55 ($45 Concession)

A tireless researcher into early music\, he interprets and performs the repertoire both as viol player and director. In 1974\, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras\, together with Lorenzo Alpert and Hopkinson Smith\, founded the ancient music ensemble Hespèrion XX in Basel as a way of recovering and disseminating the rich and fascinating musical repertoire prior to the 19th century. At the turn of the 21st century\, Hespèrion XX became known as Hespèrion XXI. \nAncient and early music’s most important value stems from its ability as a universal artistic language to transmit feelings\, emotions and ancestral ideas that even today can enthrall the contemporary listener. Today Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI are central to the understanding of the music of the period between the Middle Ages and the Baroque\, and their exquisite performances enable people to freely enjoy the aesthetic and spiritual delicacy of the works of this historical period. \nAbout the concerts\nOn Thursday 23 February\, Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI present Fantasies\, Battles and Dances: The Golden Age of European Consort Music – vibrant music of the Renaissance and Baroque featuring works by Tye\, Alberti\, Dowland\, Lawes\, Ferrabosco\, Bach\, Purcell\, Cabanilles and more. \nOn Friday 24 February\, Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI present The Venetian Influences in Musical Europe – a lively exploration of ricercari\, capricci\, canzoni\, sonatas\, dances and variations from the Renaissance and Baroque. \nMelbourne Recital Centre’s Signature Event is a must-see concert experience for music-lovers who desire to broaden their musical horizon and experience something truly special. With more than 230 recordings and many awards and distinctions including the Midem Classical Award\, the International Classical Music Award\, Grammy Award and Helpmann Award to his name\, Jordi Savall is no exception. \n\nThursday 23 & Friday 24 February 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Signature Seat $150*; Premium $115; A reserve $95 ($80 Concession); B reserve $75 ($65 Concession)
