SUMMARY:Genesis Baroque – Holding Court with J.S. Bach
DESCRIPTION:Genesis Baroque make its Melbourne Recital Centre debut with an exploration of J.S. Bach’s humanity and charisma.\nDescribed as a ‘unique and polished – and importantly\, welcome – voice in the Melbourne music scene’ (Cut Common)\, Genesis Baroque first stepped onto the stage in 2017. The ensemble has since cemented itself a master of the vibrant repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries. \nAs Melbourne’s dynamic period ensemble\, Genesis Baroque’s debut at Melbourne Recital Centre sees the ensemble travel to an era of opulence and explore works from J.S. Bach’s later years. With its intimate acoustics\, the rich tapestries of Bach’s Orchestral Suite No.2 come to life in the Primrose Potter Salon – a perfect venue to mimic the Courts and cafes Bach’s compositions were originally crafted for. \nDescribed as producing ‘a rich\, sonorous sound’ (Sydney Morning Herald)\, Genesis Baroque showcases its precision and passion during Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.5. This three-movement musical triumph featuring harpsichord\, violin\, and flute is one that can only be fully appreciated in a live concert setting. \n\nThursday 14 March 2024 6pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 (Concession $40) \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Tristan Lee – Between Heart & Head
DESCRIPTION:Conflicts of human nature unleashed through captivating Romantic piano masterpieces.\nEmbark on a captivating journey as acclaimed pianist Tristan Lee\, delves into the profound conflicts of human nature through three transcendent Romantic piano masterpieces. The opening bars of Beethoven’s late Piano Sonata Op.90 serve as a gateway to this exploration\, with its two movements embodying what Beethoven’s biographer\, Schindler\, describes as a relentless ‘struggle between the heart and the head\, and a conversation with the beloved’. As the program surges forward in Chopin’s fiercely ironic Scherzo No.3 Op.39\, in C minor\, be immersed in a world of ferocious octave passages set against moments of sublime beauty and poetic lyricism. \nLee’s command over these compositions is enriched by his profound familiarity with Liszt\, a composer who revered and regularly performed the works featured in this program. Liszt’s monumental one-movement Sonata\, often associated with the Faustian legend and its moral dilemmas bears the imprint of the preceding masterpieces\, displaying their unmistakable influence. \nLudwig van Beethoven Piano Sonata No.27 in E minor\, Op.90 \nFrédéric Chopin Scherzo No.3 in C-sharp minor\, Op.39 \nFranz Liszt Sonata in B Minor S. 178\, S. 178 \n\nTuesday 28 November 2023 6pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Beloved works from Mozart and Schumann.\nThe Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians\, creating alumni that work around the world \nAnthony Marwood performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of revered Mozart and enchanting Schumann as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nJupiter is arguably Mozart’s most revered symphony and is often used as the example when describing the heights his compositional skills reached. The final movement’s theme epitomizes the divine in Mozart’s sounding output\, an embryo which eventually grows a sublime bliss. \nSchumann was another kind of talent\, a later bloomer compared to Mozart\, but definitely someone who could understand and feel Mozart’s talent. A testimony of his reverence for Mozart was shown as the musical journey Schumann started\, Neue Zeitschrift für Musik\, was launched with a Mozart biography as its front page item. \nMorning tea returns to Mostly Mozart in 2023. SUMMARY:Accademia Arcadia – J.S. Bach's Musical Offering
DESCRIPTION:Experience the sounds of the 18th century like never before with the only copy of a Cristofori Piano in the Southern Hemisphere.\nStep back in time to the world of 1700\, and witness the origins of a revolutionary classical approach and the invention of a new keyboard instrument that could shape and shade dynamics. Accademia Arcadia\, an Aria-nominated chamber ensemble formed by Jacqueline Ogeil\, takes audiences on a journey through baroque and early classical chamber music\, including the trio-sonata\, cantata\, early opera\, and grand liturgical genres. \nWith a timbre closer to a harpsichord\, a Cristofori piano (c.1730) features a range of 54 keys rather than the standard 88. Differing greatly to what we know as the modern piano today\, its harder hammers and thinner strings allowed pianists the ability to wonderfully express feeling and colour for the first time. \nAbout the concert\nExperience the sounds of the 18th century like never before with the only copy of a Cristofori piano in the Southern Hemisphere\, commissioned by Ogeil and supported by the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. Directed by internationally acclaimed Bach expert John O’Donnell\, this incredible instrument allows the performers to present a new interpretative approach to J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering. Allow Accademia Arcadia to transport you to a time of musical innovation and beauty. \n\nWednesday 8 November 2023 6pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)

SUMMARY:Duo Eclettico: Magic
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the magical\, the ethereal\, the demonic and the ‘other’.\nDuo Eclettico’s performance in the Primrose Potter Salon celebrates the magical\, the ethereal\, the demonic\, and the ‘other’\, with works from South Africa and Australia. Hendrik Hofmeyr\, arguably South Africa’s most celebrated living composer\, is represented with Necromancer\, a virtuosic yet beautifully colourful work evoking the magic of a necromancer\, in Hofmeyr’s writing a symbol for LGBTIQ+ sexuality and attempted repression of this by traditional conservative forces. \nPaired with Ross Edwards’ Full Moon Dances\, in a stunning arrangement for saxophone\, piano and percussion by Peter Neville. Edwards depicts the universal Moon Goddess incarnate\, source of plant life and protector of the environment\, performing a series of ritual healing ceremonies. \nThe recital culminates in the world premiere of Caerwen Martin’s major new work for soprano saxophone and piano\, The Witch of Kings Cross\, about a fascinating real-life figure – Rosaleen Norton – a poet\, writer\, artist\, philosopher and ‘witch’\, one of the most unique artists in Australia from the 1940s and 50s\, whose work was banned and prohibited by the Australian government for its overt sexuality and focus on non-traditional beliefs. A revolutionary figure\, Norton was arrested multiple times\, her books and artwork publicly burned. She became known as ‘The Witch of Kings Cross’ and is a potent example of an artist whose individuality of spirit was consistently repressed by traditional forces in the conservative Australia of the 1940s and 50s. \nCaerwen Martin’s new work\, specifically composed for Duo Eclettico and this concert\, is in several parts. One section acts as a descriptive musical depiction of Norton’s life and work. The other acts as a healing ‘spell’ for Norton\, but also invites the audience to be immersed in this ritual and hopefully find aspects that can be healing for each listener themselves. \n\nTuesday 31 October 2023\, 6pm;    MRC\,  Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Duo Kirsanova-Lewis: On the Pavements Grey
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Sophia Kirsanova and pianist Georgina Lewis celebrate the diversity\, economic invention and depth of emotion of the minimalist movement. This program journeys from John Adam’s iconic Road Movies to the holy minimalism of Baltic composers Pēteris Vasks and Arvo Pärt\, and wonderful and daring composers on the fringes of the movement\, including ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’\, Missy Mazzoli. The duo also performs Platon Buravicky’s rarely heard\, celestial and deeply moving Angel’s Sight. \nGeorgina explores juxtapositions of freedom and discipline\, introspection and prayer\, beauty and pain in piano music from Arvo Pärt and\, closer to home\, Australia’s own Andrea Keller. Keller’s Life is Brut[if]al featured on her 2020 Journey Home album\, a response to deep study of Pärt’s compositional techniques. \nThis concert also marks a special moment with Sophia giving the Australian premiere\, and the second ever performance of Pēteris Vasks Sonata estiva (Summer Sonata) for violin solo\, with the composer’s blessing. Written in 2022 in response to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine\, the sonata was intended to bring brightness and hope\, take the world away from the harshness of reality and into a meditation on Latvian folk music and nature. \n\nWednesday 27 September 2023 6pm     MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:International Classics: Ilya Gringolts and Aura Go
DESCRIPTION:Watch as the violin virtuoso and piano prodigy join forces.\nFeted for his effortless renditions of the otherwise impossible – from Paganini and Locatelli to Brett Dean – Ilya’s performances and recordings have established him as one of the quintessential violin virtuosi of our time. SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet: Infinite Affinities
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Melbourne ensemble taking the world by storm.\nAffinity Quartet represents the next generation of Australia’s chamber music stars\, having developed its craft in Europe to critical acclaim. It brings home an inspired approach to music-making\, matched by its adventurous spirit as a string quartet for and of today. \nAbout the concert\nFollowing their recent 2nd prize award at the 2023 Mozart International String Quartet Competition Salzburg\, Affinity Quartet return to the Primrose Potter Salon for a program featuring two seminal string quartets. \nOpening with Haydn’s String Quartet Op.50\, No.5 ‘Dream’\, this work beautifully showcases the dance between violin\, viola and cello. Beethoven’s String Quartet No.11 however\, was considered an experiment on compositional techniques of the time with the composer himself rumoured to believe it too extreme for audience consumption\, quoted as saying ‘[the piece] is never to be performed in public.’ \nSandwiched between these two great and vastly different works is the world premiere of a piece that brings together both the progressive and popular elements of string quartet composition: Tom Misson’s Melbourne Recital Centre and the University of Melbourne commissioned Infinite Affinities. \n\nSaturday 29 July 2023 7pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)
