SUMMARY:CzechMate - Meeting at the Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Baroque without borders.\nBefore the likes of Vivaldi and Bach set the benchmark\, baroque music was wild\, temperamental\, and emotionally charged. This program from CzechMate plunges into the rarely heard instrumental music of the 1600s\, where composers like Castello\, Fontana\, and Schmelzer were inventing the language of Western music in real time. \nPerforming works without baroque’s formal architecture\, the ensemble invites audiences into a conversation that evolves through continuous\, unpredictable journeys. Here\, short bursts pivot from melancholy to exuberance in a heartbeat\, and virtuosic passages erupt without warning. \nAustralian dulcian specialist Jane Gower – performing on the bassoon’s expressive Renaissance ancestor – joins Czech violinist Helena Zemanová\, Australian violinist Julia Fredersdorff\, and Danish harpsichord maestro Lars Ulrik Mortensen. Together\, they share baroque music from before it was told how to behave. \nFriday 15 May 2026 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTickets: Standard $55 ($45 Concession) \nJane Gower dulcian; Helena Zemanová violin; Julia Fredersdorff violin; Lars Ulrik Mortensen harpsichord \nDario Castello  Sonata 9 \nGiovanni Battista Fontana  Violin Sonata II \nMichelangelo Rossi  Toccata VII \nDiego Oritz  2 Ricercares \nFrancesco Turini  Sonata 19 \nDario Castello  Sonata 10 \nJohann Balthasar Erben Sonata ut-re-mi \nPhilipp Friedrich Buchner  Sonata 8 \nJohann Heinrich Schmelzer Polnische Sackpfeifen

SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre & the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) Mostly Mozart – Mozart & the Bach sons
DESCRIPTION:When the Bachs met Mozart.\nIn this Monday morning performance\, take a deep dive into the Bach family tree and the families impact on Mozart. Featuring the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) Orchestra\, under the direction of violinist Shaun Lee-Chen (Concertmaster\, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra)\, experience a rare treat of a program featuring the Bach sons alongside one of the greats\, Mozart. \nHaving met J.C. Bach at just eight years old\, a young Mozart took inspiration from the youngest of J.S. Bach’s children\, writing his Symphony No.1 shortly after the pair first met in 1764. By the time he completed his Symphony No.31 (‘Paris’)\, written just 14 years later\, Mozart’s melodic gifts had grown beyond that of a ‘wunderkind’ and into one of a confident and brilliant composer. \nBookended between the two Mozart symphonies\, J.C. Bach’s Sinfonia Concertante and C.P.E. Bach’s Symphony in B minor highlight the different paths of compositional style taken by Johann Sebastian’s sons. J.C. gave Mozart his first exposure to the galant style\, while C.P.E. pioneered the emotionally turbulent ‘Sturm und Drang’ movement. Together\, they show how innovation happens: not in isolation\, but in conversation. \nAlongside director\, violinist\, and ANAM Alum\, Shaun Lee-Chen\, the ANAM Orchestra traces this linage\, and spotlights the moment when craftsmanship became something transcendent. \nMorning Tea\nJoin us for a complimentary morning tea of coffee\, tea\, sweet treats and savoury delights from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 04 May 2026 – 11:00am \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:The Spooky Men's Chorale - 25 Years of Pointless Grandeur
DESCRIPTION:‘Stand back and admire the beautifully sung anarchy.’ – Daily Telegraph\nThe Spooky Men’s Chorale is a magnificent\, many-headed beast that has single-handedly turned the world of men’s singing upside down. Bypassing well-trodden avenues\, they carve out new territories of mighty man sounds\, exquisite tenderness\, and charming stupidity to both celebrate masculinity and mock it. \nCelebrating their 25th birthday\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale bring their anarchic approach to vocal music and reflect on what it means to be a man. Highly theatrical\, these ordinary blokes with extraordinary voices veer from surreal to moving to joyous\, in a style which defies genre. \nPraise for The Spooky Men’s Chorale  \n‘Don’t miss an opportunity to see them.’ – Daily Telegraph   \n‘Once seen\, they are never forgotten! Beautiful singing; very sharp and witty lyrics.’ – BBC Radio 2   \n‘Grown up entertainment in the best\, most infantile way.’ – Daily Telegraph   \n‘It takes a rare skill to be very silly\, thoughtful\, and sing in perfect harmony\, but the Spooky Men’s Chorale manage to achieve just that.’ – The Guardian   \n‘Sheer musical excellence – like the ghosts of choristers long gone.’ – Sydney Morning Herald  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 03 May 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours 15 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Josh Cohen - Radiohead for Solo Piano II
DESCRIPTION:Radiohead reimagined in an audiovisual spectacle.\nMaster of improvisation\, Berlin-based Australian pianist Josh Cohen takes on legendary rock band Radiohead in this live show of remarkably inventive covers from the group’s famous back catalogue – interpretations that have gone viral on YouTube with more than ten million views and counting. \nPerforming against a visual installation custom-built exclusively for Cohen by AV artist Joshua Batty of MindBuffer\, the visuals are performed and improvised in real time\, ensuring every show is a unique experience. \nAlthough fiercely protective of their reputation\, it’s not surprising that Radiohead gave Cohen the green light to release two official songbooks and perform their songs around the world. Audacious in his approach to music and innovative in his playing style that ranges between classical and jazz\, Cohen’s skills are truly dynamic\, instantly elevating these iconic songs to a whole new level. \nContent Warning: Dynamic Lighting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 15 April 2026 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet – Incantation
DESCRIPTION:Three profoundly moving works from the 18th century to the present.\nConsidered a groundbreaking work from the moment it premiered in 1893\, Debussy’s only string quartet\, with its shimmering textures and innovative harmonies\, transports audiences to an impressionistic world. A defining moment in chamber music\, Debussy left an undeniable mark on future composers including French-born Héloïse Werner. \nDescribed as ‘a composer of subtle imagination’ (Gramophone)\, Werner’s Incantation in Four Parts blurs the boundaries between the four instrumentalists to take listeners on a journey of play and discovery. In this Melbourne premiere\, presented alongside the emotional depths of Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, Affinity Quartet showcase their impressive performance prowess described by critics as ‘flawless’ (Limelight). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 07 November 2025 – 2:00pm\nFriday 07 November 2025 – 6:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet: Incantation
SUMMARY:Alma Moodie Quartet play Haydn and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:A masterful performance of two undisputed chamber music masterpieces.\nExperience the transcendent beauty of chamber music as the acclaimed Alma Moodie Quartet presents two undisputed masterpieces. \nOpening with pristine elegance\, Haydn’s ‘Emperor’ Quartet’s true splendour comes alive in the second movement – a set of variations on the melody he composed for Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser\, which later became the German national anthem. As noble themes pass from instrument to instrument\, so too builds the complexity and richness of this great work.  \nHaving already declared his retirement\, Brahms was lured back to his love of composition upon hearing acclaimed clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. With profound emotional depths\, his Clarinet Quintet is a true return to form\, intertwining woodwind and strings through conversations of heart-stopping tenderness and nostalgic beauty. Illuminating every nuance of this personal work\, Alma Moodie Quartet\, joined by guest clarinetist Olivia Hans-Rosenbaum\, masterfully showcases Brahms’ heart-stopping tenderness and nostalgic beauty. \nAlma Moodie Quartet : Kristian Winther violin ; Anna da Silva Chen violin\nJames Wannan viola ; Miles Mullins-Chivers cello \nOlivia Hans-Rosenbaum clarinet (guest) \nJoseph Haydn String Quartet No.62 in C\, Op.76 No.3\, Hob.III:77 ‘Emperor’ \nJohannes Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor\, Op.115 \nThursday 16 October 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Quartz – Schubert's Death & the Maiden
DESCRIPTION:Quartz returns to perform one of the greatest chamber works of all time.\nThe fifth movement of Australian composer Richard Meale’s String Quartet No.2 has long had a life of its own. Dedicated to the recent loss of a dear friend\, Meale’s Cantilena Pacifica achieved stand-alone fame for its lyrical violin stretching mournfully over a gentle accompaniment. \nNamed after\, and taking inspiration from\, a song he had written many years earlier\, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden – a meditation on the fragility of mortality – is one of the composer’s most acclaimed works. \nWritten at a time when Schubert himself was unwell\, Death and the Maiden tells the story of a woman pleading with Death to spare her. Pulsing with intense emotion and drama\, the stormy passages and gentle melodies throughout remain proof of Schubert’s brilliant lyricism and provide an unforgettable listening experience \nQuartz\nKathryn Taylor violin\nEmily Beauchamp violin\nMerewyn Bramble viola\nZoe Wallace cello \nRichard Meale String Quartet No.2; V. Cantilena Pacifica \nFranz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor\, D 810\,  Death and the Maiden \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 6:00pm\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 8:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Van Diemen's band: Where Everything is Music
DESCRIPTION:The Persian music of Afghanistan meets baroque.\nTasmanian Baroque ensemble Van Diemen’s Band invites listeners to experience a stunning blend of two distinct musical worlds. Created for MONA FOMA 2023 and performed to sold-out audiences\, this cross-cultural collaboration with Ensemble Kaboul features musicians Khaled Arman (rubab) and Siar Hashimi (tablā and vocals). Embodying artistry and advocacy\, this performance preserves and celebrates musical traditions Afghanistan’s current regime is attempting to silence. \nImmerse yourself in the warm\, resonant tones of Van Diemen’s Band’s period instruments as they interweave with the intricate melodic patterns of traditional Afghan and Persian music\, while soaring vocals merge with the ethereal late 19th century piano compositions of Erik Satie. Traditional Persian compositions have been harmoniously arranged for this ensemble\, and Western classical pieces were selected for their fluid\, contemplative style\, creating a seamless interplay between Central Asian and European musical traditions. \n\n\n\n\n\nEnsemble Kaboul\nKhaled Arman rubab (Afghan lute)\nSiar Hashimi vocals\, tablā\, percussion\nMasud Hashimi percussion \nVan Diemen’s Band \nJulia Fredersdorff artistic director\, baroque violin\nLuke Plumb mandolin\nRachel Meyers viola\nLaura Vaughan viola da gamba\, violone\nMartin Penicka violoncello\nDonald Nicolson harpsichord \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram \nF.A Naynawaz arr. SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective: The Big Idea – 10 Years of Rubiks Collective
DESCRIPTION:‘Incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching.’ – Limelight\nWhat if one idea changed everything? \nJourney through the sound of inspiration striking as Melbourne’s Rubiks Collective celebrates its 10th anniversary with a world premiere of The Big Idea – a genre-defying monodrama from Australian composer Matthew Shlomowitz and writer Vid Simoniti. \nAt the heart of the piece is a single character on the brink – a new idea blossoms\, a life unravels\, and we witness the tantalising chaos in between. Featuring celebrated vocalist and long-time Rubiks collaborator vocalist Lotte Betts-Dean\, The Big Idea is a story of ambition and artistic obsession that spirals from bluest desperation into delightful absurdity. \nMelbourne’s cult-favourites Rubiks Collective have established themselves as fearless innovators in Australia’s contemporary classical landscape. Hailed for creating experiences that are ‘incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching’ (Limelight)\, they continue to push boundaries with this production. \nCombining spoken word\, music\, and theatrical elements\, The Big Idea is an iconoclastic departure from monodramas like Schoenberg’s Expectation and Poulenc’s The Human Voice.  \nListen in as the ensemble shapeshifts from samba to Scandinavian jazz\, from late Romanticism to old-school Broadway—creating a sonic world as unpredictable as the human psyche itself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 25 September 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $37; Concession $30
