SUMMARY:Mozart Project Concert 1
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed pianist Elyane Laussade plays Mozart Piano Concerto No.17 in G major\, K.453\, the first of three she will play with the Melbourne Musicians as part of her Mozart Project. The very beautiful concerto was written for Mozart’s favourite pupil\, Barbara Ployer\, and the last movement is a set of perky variations on a tune he learnt from his pet starling . \nThe concert includes one of Haydn’s Paris symphonies\, No.83 in G minor\, “La Poule” and the premiere of a symphony written by Dittersdorf in 1791\, the year of Mozart’s death. The three composers were friends who played string quartets together.

SUMMARY:Double Trouble
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank Pam present a rare opportunity to hear internationally acclaimed guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan in Concertos by Handel and Vivaldi (arranged by their father Edward Grigoryan) with a string orchestra  in an intimate venue with excellent acoustics.  They will also play Duos specially arranged for them by Edward. \nThe Duo was nominated for an Aria Award in 2017\, but Slava was also nominated and eventually won the Aria for his CD of Bach Cello Suites on Barotone Guitar.  This year he won the Aria again for the Second Volume of Bach Suites. Despite this he now performs almost exclusively with his brother Leonard and has a very busy schedule concertising and touring widely across Australia and overseas. \nThe orchestra will perform Austrian dance music by Lanner\, Schubert and Johann Strauss Senior and Junior as a tribute to Frank Pam’s Viennese heritage and his birthday. \n

SUMMARY:España
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank U. Pam present a program of Spanish music by various composers. Most of the pieces are premieres or rare performances. The centrepiece is de Falla’s Seven Spanish Folksongs in a specially commissioned arrangement for chamber orchestra\, sung by exciting young soprano Rada Tochalna. This is de Falla’s most arranged composition and one of his most popular. It is one of the most frequently performed sets of Spanish art songs. The songs are strikingly diverse\, coming from different parts of Spain\, but all deal with love and courtship\, whether playfully\, seriously or tragically.    The concert concludes with 3 iconic pieces in honour of the 90th birthday of George Dreyfus. \nAlbeniz – Asturias and Sevilla from Suite Española.                                                                                                                                                           Bizet – Suite from Carmen                                                                                                                                                                                                 de Falla –  Seven Spanish Folksongs                                                                                                                                                                              Waldteufel – España Waltz                                                                                                                                                                                        Shostakovich – Spanish Dance                                                                                                                                                                                         Dreyfus – Tender Mercies; Larino Safe Haven; Rush \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tricolore: Three Italian Maestri
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank Pam present a program featuring three outstanding soloists in three of the greatest and most popular works of the 18th century. \nPergolesi (1710-1736) Stabat Mater; Albinoni (1671-1751) Oboe Concerto in D minor ) Op.9 No.2; Alessandro Marcello (1684-1750) Oboe Concerto in D minor.      Tania de Jong soprano\, Hamish Gould countertenor\, Anne Gilby oboe. \nPergolesi’s Stabat Mater was his last work before his untimely death aged 26. It is a masterpiece and was the most published work in the 18th century and is still popular today. The Albinoni concerto is the best of his 16 oboe concertos with an Adagio like an operatic aria. The Marcello Oboe Concerto is one of the most popular baroque concertos. It was first known in a keyboard transcription by Bach (almost his exact contemporary) and is striking for its sustained note of pathos\, especially in the beautiful slow movement. \n
