SUMMARY:Schubert Mass
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a new chapter in the MCO journey—our first performance of music for chamber orchestra and choir. Polyphonic Voices\, directed by Michael Fulcher\, has gained a reputation for its extraordinary choral singing and collaborations with diverse ensembles including MSO and Plexus. They join us for Schubert’s second Mass\, a work inspired by the composer’s divine gift for melody. Utterly gorgeous and infused with a gentle mystery\, the Mass in G is a pure ray of heaven on Earth. \nComposed just a few months after the Mass\, Schubert’s third symphony reveals an impossibly accomplished and confident eighteen-year-old symphonist. Written with sparkling classic lightness\, a treasury of tunes and unalloyed joy\, this rarely-performed work of genius is among the most uplifting of all symphonies. \nBACH Violin Concerto in E major BWV 1042\nSCHUBERT Mass No 2 in G major D167\nSCHUBERT Symphony No 3 in D major \nWilliam Hennessy AM\nDIRECTOR & VIOLIN \nMichael Fulcher\nDIRECTOR \nPolyphonic Voices

SUMMARY:Bach Concertos
DESCRIPTION:To hear Bach’s keyboard concertos is to witness the birth of a genre. Alternating bustling brio and the most heartfelt lyricism\, Bach creates music that speaks across the centuries. Recently praised for his “simply gorgeous” playing and “crystalline phrasing” by the Washington Post\, pianist David Fung is an ideal match for the immaculate poise and effortless dexterity these wonderful concertos require. \nBéla Bartók’s Divertimento is one of the iconic works for chamber orchestra—an exhilarating showpiece\, inflected with folk melodies and driving rhythms. An intriguing Telemann concerto for four violins and three heartfelt miniatures by Dvořák complete a concert of contrasts across the centuries. \nDVOŘÁK Three Miniatures Op 75a\nTELEMANN Concerto for four violins TWV54:A1\nBACH Keyboard Concerto No 7 in G minor BWV1058\nBACH Keyboard Concerto No 4 in A major BWV1055\nBARTÓK Divertimento Sz113 \nWilliam Hennessy AM\nDIRECTOR & VIOLIN \nDavid Fung\nPIANO

SUMMARY:Shostakovich\, Raff and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Three extraordinary works showing the full range of the dramatic\, virtuosic and emotional possibilities of chamber music. Shostakovich’s theatrical\, short octet is one of the great works of twentieth-century chamber music. Swiss-German composer Joachim Raff brings music brimming with joyous energy and lush melody. Finally\, Brahms’ youthful and sonorous second sextet brings this chamber music recital to a ravishing close. With six and eight string musicians performing in perfect synergy\, this is a performance of enthralling energy and compelling intimacy. \nSHOSTAKOVICH Two Pieces for String Octet Op 11\nRAFF Octet in C major Op 176\nBRAHMS Sextet No 2 in G major Op 36 \nAustralian Octet

SUMMARY:Romance
DESCRIPTION:Indelible masterpieces from four great Romantic composers. \nBe transported into the vivid emotional worlds of the Romantics\, with the mercurial joy of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony\, a glimpse of tragedy from Verdi’s La Traviata\, and the exquisite tenderness of Dvořák’s rarely-performed Romance. \nFor his only piano concerto\, Schumann rewrote the rule book\, bringing orchestra and soloist into a profound dialogue inspired by chamber music. To perform the concerto with MCO\, we welcome Russian pianist Konstantin Shamray\, winner of the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia.

SUMMARY:Schubert Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to be enthralled by the greatest work of chamber music. \nIn 1828\, two months before his untimely death at the age of just 31\, Schubert completed what would be his only string quintet. Unperformed for more than two decades after his death\, it has risen to be admired as a work of extraordinary emotional range and great beauty\, demanding exceptional skill from its performers. \nThis performance of the Schubert Quintet by members of Australian Octet is matched with Dvorak’s atmospheric Sextet and a newly-commissioned Octet from one of our finest living composers\, Graeme Koehne.

SUMMARY:Mozart’s Piano
DESCRIPTION:Two heavenly piano concerti and two joyous orchestral masterpieces—a decadent all-Mozart delight. \nAs well as his skills as a composer\, Mozart’s reputation in his day also rested on his exceptional abilities as a pianist. Many of his 27 piano concerti were written for his own concerts\, and they are testament to his technique and sensitivity at the keyboard. \nFew Australian musicians have achieved an international career like David Fung\, whose performances of Mozart’s piano concerti have earned significant international praise. Now based in New York\, Fung is a laureate of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth competition in Brussels and the Arthur Rubinstein competition in Tel Aviv\, and performs for celebrated orchestras and festivals across the globe. David joins MCO to perform two of Mozart’s most beautiful piano concerti alongside the ebullient Symphony No 29 and the majestic Serenata Notturna.

SUMMARY:Bach: Spirit & Spectacle
DESCRIPTION:The many faces of the Baroque’s great genius \nNo name is more synonymous with Baroque music than Bach. Through his prolific output\, he brought the musical language of the time to the pinnacle of its expressive power\, fusing intellect\, technique and emotion into some of the most enduring music of all. This program explores the enormous range of contrasting moods and colours in Bach’s music\, from the sublime cantatas to his ecstatic and virtuosic string concerti. \nSara Macliver is a musical living treasure. Her superb soprano voice is the perfect vehicle for the moving Bach arias she performs with MCO in this program. Sara also performs Calvin Bowman’s lush song cycle Die Linien des Lebens (The Lines of Life) which was written for her and premiered with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2010. The program also showcases brilliant young violinist Anne-Marie Johnson as the soloist in Bach’s demanding D minor Violin Concerto.
