SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra – Light & Shade
DESCRIPTION:Music enriches our lives with its incredible array of moods\, textures and timbres.\nSophie Rowell has curated this program of vivid colours and strong contrasts\, to showcase the versatility of Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. The vigour of CPE Bach rubs shoulders with the intimate Romanticism of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov; the upbeat energy of Yuin composer Brenda Gifford is juxtaposed with the lush soundworld of Edward Elgar. \nNigel Westlake is one of Australia’s most captivating composers. To finish this concert\, MCO is thrilled to perform the world premiere of the chamber version of his Trumpet Concerto. From gentle lyrical passages to exhilarating virtuosic moments\, this concerto traverses a kaleidoscope of colours — it is Nigel at his glorious best. MCO’s soloist is the young Principal Trumpet of the MSO\, Owen Morris\, a dazzling superstar of the instrument. This promises to lift the roof off! \n\nhursday 18 April 7.30pm & Sunday 21 April 2.30pm 2024; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: $140 – $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra – Music Speaks
DESCRIPTION:More than words could ever express\, music speaks directly to your heart.\nThe musicians of MCO leave nothing on the table in this season opener\, showcasing the orchestra’s powerful emotional expression and captivating unconducted dynamics. \nArtistic Director Sophie Rowell has asked musical storyteller Katy Abbott to compose a new work to begin our year\, drawing on their mutual love of the communicative possibilities of music. \nCurrently Principal Viola of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, Chris Moore brings his trademark eloquence and insight to every musical encounter. Chris joins Sophie Rowell to perform the solos in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante\, with its beloved dialogue between the solo violin and viola. Each voice inspires the other\, a true conversation between friends. \nChris steps into the orchestra for Bunuba woman Molly Jalakbiya and Paul Stanhope’s haunting Dirrari Lament\, telling the story of a mother black cockatoo grieving for the loss of her young one. Hope returns with Dvořák’s Serenade\, one of the great masterpieces of the string orchestra repertoire\, and a celebration of Czech song and dance. \n\nThursday 29 February 7.30pm & Sunday 3 March 2.30pm 2024; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $140 ($120 Concession); A reserve $120 ($100 Concession); B reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC reserve $70 ($50 Concession)

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Art of the Symphony
DESCRIPTION:From the ancient Greek for ‘sounded harmoniously’\, the words ‘sinfonia’ and ‘symphony’ have been used for centuries.\nLeonora Duarte\, a Flemish composer who died before Bach was born\, used it to describe her haunting works for viol ensemble. Haydn wrote over 100 symphonies building on Stamitz’s innovations. \nFast-forward to Britten’s youthfully delightful Simple Symphony\, and finally to our commission of Australian composer Caerwen Martin\, whose music reflecting on the sinfonias of Duarte brings us full circle. \nJohann Stamitz Symphony in F Op. 24\, No. 3 \nBenjamin Britten Simple Symphony \nLeonora Duarte Sinfonia \nCaerwen Martin Embracing Duarte – MCO premiere commission \nJosef Haydn Symphony No. 49 in F minor Passion \n\nSunday 27 August 2.30pm & Thursday 31 August 2023 7.30pm    Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \nMelbourne Recital Centre\,  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\n \n\n\n\n\nTICKERS: Premium $140 ($125 Concession); A-Reserve $120 ($105 Concession); B-Reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC-Reserve $70 ($50 Concession);   Under 40 B & C Reserve $40;   Student $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Beginning of the World
DESCRIPTION:The two great gardens of English music\, separated by two centuries\, are the theme of this concert experience co-curated by Sophie Rowell and the incomparable Genevieve Lacey.\nThe beautiful\, intricate music of Elizabethan and Stuart England is an escape to a world far from our own. In this first flowering of English music\, composer William Byrd sowed the seeds with his round\, ‘The Beginning of the World’\, and the sublime artistry of Purcell burst forth. When Elgar\, Walton and others began to plant the second great garden in more recent times\, the earlier golden age was never far from their minds. \nFor decades\, audiences and fellow artists have been drawn to Genevieve Lacey’s unique artistic visions\, which reimagine music from diffuse contexts as wholes greater than the sum of their parts. We are delighted to be joined on stage by Genevieve for the first time since 2017. \nFeaturing 500 years of English music curated by Sophie Rowell and Genevieve Lacey. \n\nThursday 22 June 7.30pm & Sunday 25 June 2023 2.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $140 ($125 Concession); A-Reserve $120 ($105 Concession); B-Reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC-Reserve $70 ($50 Concession); Under 40 B & C Reserve $40; Student $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Woven Threads
DESCRIPTION:For her first orchestral concert as MCO’s artistic director\, Sophie Rowell invites you to revel in the power and possibilities of the string orchestra.\nWe start with the majesty and eloquence of Bach — a single strand of sound that unfolds into a miniature universe. And we end with Sophie as soloist\, in the dazzling youthful Mendelssohn Concerto in D minor. \nIn between\, we weave together through time and place\, tracing rich connections on three continents in four centuries. We thread together Melody Eötvös’ Meraki\, inspired by a Greek word meaning to perform with soul\, creativity and love; a musical firework by American genius Coleridge Perkinson; a dash of theatrical Mozart; and a love letter to Tchaikovsky. \n\nThursday 9 March 7.30pm & Sunday 12 March 2023 2:30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;  Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $140 ($125 Concession); A-Reserve $120 ($105 Concession); B-Reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC-Reserve $70 ($50 Concession) Under 40; B & C Reserve $40; Student $30 \nAustralian Digital Concert Hall Experience this concert online with Australian Digital Concert Hall. Click here for live stream tickets.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Mozart & the Violin
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s delicious fourth violin concerto\, with soloist and guest director Sophie Rowell.\nMozart was among the most famous pianists of his day\, but was also a highly skilled violinist and violist. While still in his teens\, Mozart was appointed concertmaster in the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg’s orchestra. It was during this appointment\, in 1775\, that he penned all five of his violin concertos. \nThe fourth concerto is a favourite of violinists and audiences\, by turns effervescent and charming\, and infused with Mozart’s effortless operatic sense of melody. To perform it\, we are joined by violinist Sophie Rowell. \nThis concert also includes symphonies from the 1770s by close members of Mozart’s circle\, a delectable suite by Sibelius reflecting on romantic aspects of Finnish rural life\, and a nocturne by Melbourne-based composer Caerwen Martin. \n\nThursday 17 November 7.30pm & Sunday 20 November 2022 2.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Premium $143 ($133 Concession)\nA Reserve $121 ($107 Concession)\nB Reserve $96 ($85 Concession)\nC Reserve $70 ($58 Concession) \nUnder 40 A & B Reserve $40; Student $30

Each concerto is accompanied by a sonnet\, and the hallmarks of each Italian season\, from birdsong in Spring to pesky flies in Summer\, are imagined in amazingly vivid musical form. \nThe orchestra is delighted to premiere Calvin Bowman’ s Daylesford Music\, commissioned by the people of Daylesford. \n\nSunday 28 August 2.30pm & Thursday 1 September 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nPremium $143 ($133 Concession)\nA Reserve $121 ($107 Concession)\nB Reserve $96 ($85 Concession)\nC Reserve $70 ($58 Concession) \nGroup 10+\nPremium $121.55; A Reserve $102.85; B Reserve $81.60; C Reserve $59.50 \nUnder 40 A & B Reserve $40    Student $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Rhapsodic Bohemians
DESCRIPTION:A double dose of Dvořák and the ferociously brilliant Feld flute concerto\, with the legendary Prudence Davis on flute.\nProgram\nAntonín Dvořák – From the Bohemian Forest Op.68\, No.5: Silent Woods \nJindřich Feld – Concerto for Flute and Orchestra \nAntonín Dvořák – String Quintet No.2 in G\, Op.77 – arr. string orchestra \nAbout the concert\nPassionate\, melodic\, filled with drama and pathos: the music of Czech composers is always enthralling listening. \nNo Czech composer is more famous than Dvořák\, and for these concerts\, we feature his miniature for cello aorchestra\, Silent Woods\, and an opulent orchestral arrangement of his second String Quintet. \nIn between\, one of the most exciting works of the flute concerto repertoire and one of Australia’s most exciting flautists. SUMMARY:Mozart the King
DESCRIPTION:In the 1780s\, Mozart forged a new path as an independent composer and pianist. The piano concertos were a vehicle for his prowess in both roles—opening up the musical possibilities of the piano concerto and bringing Mozart to the height of his fame as a performer. Majestic\, elegant and expansive\, the Piano Concerto No 22 delights with its subtle beauty and Mozart’s ever-present gift for melody. To perform it with MCO\, one of Australia’s best loved and most charismatic pianists\, Stefan Cassomenos. \nHaydn received the news that Mozart had died while writing his 98th Symphony\, and it became a coded tribute to the great composer\, quoting his Coronation Mass\, the Jupiter Symphony and even God Save the King. \nWith a feisty Cimarosa overture and Beethoven’s intimate Romance performed with outstanding violinist Natalia Harvey as soloist\, this is quite simply a Classical feast. \nCIMAROSA The Secret Marriage: Overture\nMOZART Piano Concerto No. 22 in E flat major K482\nBEETHOVEN Romance No 2 for violin and orchestra Op 50\nHAYDN Symphony No 98 in B flat major The King \nWilliam Hennessy AM\nDIRECTOR & VIOLIN \nStefan Cassomenos\nPIANO \nNatalia Harvey\nVIOLIN \nMichael Dahlenburg\nCONDUCTOR
