David is widely sought after as one of Australia’s great soloists and we’re delighted to share his brilliant playing with you in Mozart’s masterpiece. \nAfter interval\, we celebrate the music of George Walker\, the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. DESCRIPTION:Energy\, daring and imagination.\nTimo-Veikko Valve (Tipi to his friends) left Helsinki 17 years ago to become Principal Cello of Australian Chamber Orchestra. Since then he’s continuously travelled across Australia and the globe delighting audiences on his 400-year-old cello. \nFor this project\, MCO welcomes him as our guest curator\, director\, and soloist. DESCRIPTION:Music can be a powerful advocate\, a voice heard more loudly than the spoken word.\nJoin Melbourne Chamber Orchestra as they celebrate composers who made the world better through music and amplified overlooked voices — whether it was Vivaldi’s work in music education\, Mahler’s reappraisal of the work of Beethoven\, or Florence Price’s tireless advocacy for women of colour. \nClaire Edwardes is Australia’s most recognisable percussionist\, a trailblazing icon\, a passionate advocate for her instruments\, a champion of new music\, and a bold\, memorable performer. \nClaire is the soloist with MCO for Natalie Williams’ percussion concerto Steeling Fire. The work pays homage to the women who fought for the right to work at the Port Kembla Steelworks in Wollongong in 1980\, and features an arsenal of metallic sounds\, some of which were sourced from the Steelworks. It was during this appointment\, in 1775\, that he penned all five of his violin concertos. \nThe fourth concerto is a favourite of violinists and audiences\, by turns effervescent and charming\, and infused with Mozart’s effortless operatic sense of melody. So it is with the two composers Mozart and Salieri\, whose relationship was mostly warm and collegial\, despite film portrayals to the contrary. \nOn the Mozart side\, the lighthearted Symphony No.28\, and the Jeunehomme concerto\, performed with one of Australia’s leading pianists\, Hoang Pham.
