SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Flexible Sky
DESCRIPTION:MCO + Slava Grigoryan.\nGuitar virtuoso Slava Grigoryan takes centre stage in a dazzling season opener that celebrates innovation and reinvention. In true MCO fashion\, the concert begins with a world premiere by Joe Chindamo\, a composer celebrated for his cross-genre fluency and lyrical voice. \nGrigoryan’s artistry shines in Vivaldi’s D Concerto\, a Baroque gem sparkling with charm and vitality. MCO then offers a new perspective on a timeless classic – Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata\, reimagined for strings. Rich orchestral textures bring fresh depth to an iconic work. With their folkloric flair\, Bartók’s Romanian Dances segue perfectly into a world premiere arrangement of Flexible Sky by Wolfgang Muthspiel – a work that feels both intimate and vast. \nThe concert finishes with Matthew Hindson’s Song and Dance\, bringing the program to a rhythmic and emotional close. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nArtists: Sophie Rowell Artistic Director ; Slava Grigoryan Classical Guitar\nMelbourne Chamber Orchestra \nJoe Chindamo OAM  New work* \nAntonio Vivaldi  Guitar Concerto in D RV93 \nLudwig van Beethoven Piano Sonata No.14 in C sharp minor Op.27 No.2 Moonlight\n(arr. string orchestra by Jakub Kowalewski) \nBéla Bartók Romanian Folk Dances Sz56 \nWolfgang Muthspiel  Flexible Sky Redux (new arrangement*) \nMatthew Hindson Song and Dance \n* MCO premiere commission \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 26 February 2026 – 7:30pm\nSunday 01 March 2026 – 2:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Nightingale
DESCRIPTION:Baroque and modern treasures in an explosion of colour and energy.\nHarpsichordist Donald Nicolson brings an infectious enthusiasm and a sparkling musicality to everything he does. This program sees him take centre stage\, both as guest director from the keyboard and as the soloist in Bach’s stunning first harpsichord concerto. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to experience a range of MCO players and instruments up close. Our own Emma Sullivan features in one of the most famous double bass sonatas from the Baroque period\, and the violin section comes to the fore in Corelli’s dynamic Concerto Grosso. \nThe more modern works featured here include a hidden gem written by Colin Brumby and a new commission from exciting Melbourne composer\, Melody Eötvös. \nPost-Concert Wine Tasting\nJoin MCO for a wine-tasting in the ground floor foyer following the concerts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 20 November 2025 – 7:30pm\nSunday 23 November 2025 – 2:30pm \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Carnival
DESCRIPTION:The energy and exhilaration of eight distinctive voices \nWriting when he was a mere 16 years old\, Mendelssohn noted that his newly composed Octet “must be played by all the instruments in symphonic orchestral style.” It beggars belief that someone so young could have written one of the grandest chamber music works. The Octet is epic in proportion\, youthful in its excitement and simply breathtaking when it reaches its exhilarating conclusion. \nSpurred on by this\, and by Mendelssohn’s own inspiration from Goethe’s Faust\, Adelaide-born composer Jakub Jankowski’s Octet is grand in scale and dramatic in performance – the players at times becoming the characters of Faust and Mephistopheles – before the piece\, like Mendelssohn’s\, comes to an exultant conclusion.\nIn between\, Jennifer Higdon’s Quiet Art acts as a palate cleanser – a moment of calm that the world sorely needs at this time. \nThis is a concert that will lift the roof off the venue and the spirits of all those in it. \nFriday 17 October 2025 7:30pm \n75 Reid St\, Fitzroy North \nLocation\nTICKETS: $60; Concession/Senior $55; Child $25 – General Admission

DESCRIPTION:Close friends and inspiring colleagues.\nMCO’s season opens with an enchanting work by our very own violist/composer Matt Laing\, whose deep familiarity with the orchestra really highlights the MCO’s warm\, burnished sound. \nWe follow with the much-loved Mozart Clarinet Concerto starring David Griffiths on his new basset clarinet with its rich\, mellow tone. David is widely sought after as one of Australia’s great soloists and we’re delighted to share his brilliant playing with you in Mozart’s masterpiece. \nAfter interval\, we celebrate the music of George Walker\, the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. His reflective work\, Lyric for Strings\, contains echoes of American folk songs\, which are especially poignant as it was written for his grandmother who had just passed away. \nFrom here we once again lift our spirits through the beauty and wonder of Ravel’s String Quartet arranged for string orchestra – a powerful way to end the performance. \nThis program’s pieces are all written in honour of people who have been an inspiration to these composers… a legacy we hope we can help continue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDates & Times\n\nThursday 06 March 2025 – 7:30pm\nSunday 09 March 2025 – 2:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Blazing Trails
DESCRIPTION:Music can be a powerful advocate\, a voice heard more loudly than the spoken word.\nJoin Melbourne Chamber Orchestra as they celebrate composers who made the world better through music and amplified overlooked voices — whether it was Vivaldi’s work in music education\, Mahler’s reappraisal of the work of Beethoven\, or Florence Price’s tireless advocacy for women of colour. \nClaire Edwardes is Australia’s most recognisable percussionist\, a trailblazing icon\, a passionate advocate for her instruments\, a champion of new music\, and a bold\, memorable performer. \nClaire is the soloist with MCO for Natalie Williams’ percussion concerto Steeling Fire. The work pays homage to the women who fought for the right to work at the Port Kembla Steelworks in Wollongong in 1980\, and features an arsenal of metallic sounds\, some of which were sourced from the Steelworks. An effervescent Vivaldi concerto\, written originally for the young recorder players at the orphanage in Venice where he taught\, will be revealed anew on the vibraphone. \nThursday 30 May 7.30pm & Sunday 2 June 2.30pm 2024; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: $140 – $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra – Music Speaks
DESCRIPTION:More than words could ever express\, music speaks directly to your heart.\nThe musicians of MCO leave nothing on the table in this season opener\, showcasing the orchestra’s powerful emotional expression and captivating unconducted dynamics. \nArtistic Director Sophie Rowell has asked musical storyteller Katy Abbott to compose a new work to begin our year\, drawing on their mutual love of the communicative possibilities of music. \nCurrently Principal Viola of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, Chris Moore brings his trademark eloquence and insight to every musical encounter. Hope returns with Dvořák’s Serenade\, one of the great masterpieces of the string orchestra repertoire\, and a celebration of Czech song and dance. \n\nThursday 29 February 7.30pm & Sunday 3 March 2.30pm 2024; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $140 ($120 Concession); A reserve $120 ($100 Concession); B reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC reserve $70 ($50 Concession)

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Art of the Symphony
DESCRIPTION:From the ancient Greek for ‘sounded harmoniously’\, the words ‘sinfonia’ and ‘symphony’ have been used for centuries.\nLeonora Duarte\, a Flemish composer who died before Bach was born\, used it to describe her haunting works for viol ensemble. Johann Stamitz was a visionary\, writing some of the first works that are recognisably modern symphonies. Haydn wrote over 100 symphonies building on Stamitz’s innovations. \nFast-forward to Britten’s youthfully delightful Simple Symphony\, and finally to our commission of Australian composer Caerwen Martin\, whose music reflecting on the sinfonias of Duarte brings us full circle. \nJohann Stamitz Symphony in F Op. 24\, No. 3 \nBenjamin Britten Simple Symphony \nLeonora Duarte Sinfonia \nCaerwen Martin Embracing Duarte – MCO premiere commission \nJosef Haydn Symphony No. 49 in F minor Passion \n\nSunday 27 August 2.30pm & Thursday 31 August 2023 7.30pm    Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \nMelbourne Recital Centre\,  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\n \n\n\n\n\nTICKERS: Premium $140 ($125 Concession); A-Reserve $120 ($105 Concession); B-Reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC-Reserve $70 ($50 Concession);   Under 40 B & C Reserve $40;   Student $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Beginning of the World
DESCRIPTION:The two great gardens of English music\, separated by two centuries\, are the theme of this concert experience co-curated by Sophie Rowell and the incomparable Genevieve Lacey.\nThe beautiful\, intricate music of Elizabethan and Stuart England is an escape to a world far from our own. In this first flowering of English music\, composer William Byrd sowed the seeds with his round\, ‘The Beginning of the World’\, and the sublime artistry of Purcell burst forth. When Elgar\, Walton and others began to plant the second great garden in more recent times\, the earlier golden age was never far from their minds. \nFor decades\, audiences and fellow artists have been drawn to Genevieve Lacey’s unique artistic visions\, which reimagine music from diffuse contexts as wholes greater than the sum of their parts. We are delighted to be joined on stage by Genevieve for the first time since 2017. \nFeaturing 500 years of English music curated by Sophie Rowell and Genevieve Lacey. \n\nThursday 22 June 7.30pm & Sunday 25 June 2023 2.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $140 ($125 Concession); A-Reserve $120 ($105 Concession); B-Reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC-Reserve $70 ($50 Concession); Under 40 B & C Reserve $40; Student $30
