SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir St Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Bach Choir and Melbourne Baroque Orchestra conducted by Rick Prakhoff present the St Matthew Passion by J.S. Bach\, sung in German. Two adult choirs\, a children’s choir\, two orchestras and outstanding Australian soloists will fill Melbourne Recital Centre with this extraordinary\, dramatic telling of the Passion story\, written to be performed on Good Friday. \nThe Choir’s 2022 performance of this work received a five minute ovation with The Age saying ‘a sterling interpretation of the long Bach Passion’ and Classic Melbourne claiming this ‘concert was a triumph.’ \nAndrew Goodwin again brings his beautiful high tenor to the role of the Evangelist. Adrian Tamburini will sing Christus\, together with aria soloists Lorina Gore\, Sally-Anne Russell\, Henry Choo\, Simon Meadows and Christopher Hillier. \nFrom the darkly evocative orchestral opening Bach creates a narrative more compelling than that of any opera of the period. Sung in German\, this extraordinary musical journey is the perfect reflection for Good Friday.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir in Concert: Bach\, Mozart and Mendelssohn
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Bach Choir’s first concert of the year features two glorious oratorios by J S Bach and short gems by Mozart and Mendelssohn\, with four of Australia’s finest vocal soloists. \nProgram: J S Bach’s Easter Oratorio BWV 249; J S Bach’s Ascension Oratorio BWV 11; Mozart’s Litaniae Lauretanae K 109; Mendelssohn’s Jesu meine Freude \nComposed for Easter Sunday 1725\, Bach’s jubilant Easter Oratorio was later revised and slightly expanded – the version usually performed today. Bach apparently held the oratorio in high esteem and performed it several times. The opening chorus of his Ascension Oratorio “Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen” (“Praise God in His Realms”)\, reflects the triumphant joy of Christ’s Ascension\, especially in the opening and closing choruses.  The festive scoring for the orchestra with trumpets and timpani heightens the effect in both works. \nMendelssohn\, an early champion of J S Bach\, deliberately chose Bach as his model for his eight chorale cantatas\, and Jesu meine Freude follows closely Bach’s prototypes. It is composed in E minor\, the same key as Bach’s setting. \nMozart’s Litaniae Lauretanae (Litany of Loreto) K 109 is an invocation to the Virgin Mary.  One of many liturgical works Mozart composed for Salzburg between his three journeys to Italy\, it shows an astonishing mastery for a 15 year-old boy.  The Archbishop of Salzburg at the time mandated clear\, simple and economical music\, with avoidance of any operatic excess; but Mozart was able to work within these constraints to produce a moving work with alternating sections of joyful and poignant or sombre mood. \nMelbourne Bach Choir & Orchestra\nwith Olivia Cranwell Soprano\, Sally-Anne Russell Mezzo Soprano\, Andrew Goodwin Tenor and Christopher Hillier Baritone.\nConductor and Artistic Director Rick Prakhoff \nSunday 21st April at 3pm \nAll Saints’ Anglican Church\, 2 Chapel St\, St Kilda East Vic 3182. \nBookings: www.trybooking.com/COXEZ

SUMMARY:Rachael Beesley Solo Violin Recital – Sonata\, Partita & Passacaglia
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Rachael Beesley performs heavenly works by 18th Century musicians.\nBach’s Sonatas and Partitas for violin alone are a true exploration of what possibilities are available for this instrument. Completed by 1720 but not published until 1802\, the French style dance movements of the D minor Partita Allemanda – Corrente – Sarabanda – Giga\, all consist of two parts repeated to offer more chance for the listener (and dancer) to explore the intricacies of Bach’s exquisite writing while the G minor Sonata explores the Italian style of writing Adagio – Fuga – Siciliana – Presto\, in the pattern of the sonata da Chiesa (church sonata). \nBracketed by these well-known works by Bach is the soulful Passacaglia by Biber\, which tells the story of the Guardian Angel as the final moment of the Mystery of the Rosary Sonatas. Biber explores the rich sonorities and varied instrumental colours through a series of variations\, bringing Baroque affects to life in this elevated composition. \n\nSaturday 8 April 2023 5pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $40 ($29 Concession); Student $29

SUMMARY:Fauré Requiem and works by Debussy\, Ravel\, Saint Saëns and Fauré
DESCRIPTION:This concert combines Fauré’s sublime Requiem\, one of the best-loved of all choral works\, with shorter secular pieces from the French repertoire.\nDebussy’s sensitive settings of 15th century poems by Charles d’Orleans contrast with Ravel’s exquisite Trois Chansons\, where both the composer’s own texts and music are full of archaic references. Fauré’s witty Madrigal and a selection of Saint-Saëns’ expressive songs complete the program.\nRick Prakhoff conducts the Melbourne Bach Choir and Orchestra\, with soloists Emilia Bertolini\, soprano\, and Jeremy Kleeman bass-baritone. \nThis concert program will also be performed on Sunday 30 June 2019 at 2.30pm\, at Ballarat Central Uniting Church\, 103 Lydiard St S\, Ballarat Central Tickets at www.trybooking.com/BBRBK

SUMMARY:Good Friday Concert - Brahms and Szymanowski
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Bach Choir and Orchestra continue their tradition of Good Friday concerts with this imaginative program\, featuring an outstanding cast of soloists. \nFollowing the success of Opera Australia’s recent production of King Roger by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski\, his rarely performed Stabat Mater is paired with the much loved German Requiem by Johannes Brahms. \nThe six short movements of Szymanowski’s expressive masterpiece invoke Polish folk elements and echoes of early counterpoint\, in a highly personal setting. Brahms’ choice of text for the Requiem was also individualistic\, focussing on a more humanist rather than overtly Christian take on the concept of the end of life\, in this deeply felt and dramatic work. \nThe Melbourne Bach Choir and orchestra\, conducted by Rick Prakhoff\, are joined by renowned soloists Lorina Gore\, soprano; Belinda Paterson\, mezzo-soprano; and Warwick Fyfe\, baritone.
