SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:One of the best-known works in the entire choral repertory will be performed in Melbourne this September. From the opening chorus of O Fortuna – an earworm familiar not only from the concert hall\, but also from its use in countless films and commercials – the passion and pace of this music are unstoppable. \nSoloists will be soprano Jane Magão (currently touring in Opera Australia’s La Bohème); Melbourne favourite\, baritone Christopher Hillier; and tenor Robert Macfarlane in a hilarious cameo as the roasting swan. The concert will also feature the Australian Children’s Choir\, making their debut performance with Melbourne Bach Choir\, and will be conducted by Rick Prakhoff. \nCarmina Burana will be presented in the version for two pianos (Elyane Laussade and Kathryn Pisani) and percussion.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir: A Christmas Fanfare
DESCRIPTION:A Christmas Fanfare: a feast of music for choir and brass\nChoral masterworks from four centuries and favourite traditional carols \nMelbourne Bach Choir welcomes the Christmas season with A Christmas Fanfare – a concert of choral pieces by composers from Sweelink to Pinkham via Palestrina\, Poulenc\, Britten and more\, of course including Bach. Well-known carols are programmed for audience participation. \nThe full Melbourne Bach Choir and the MBC Chamber Choir will be conducted by founding Artistic Director Rick Prakhoff and accompanied by organist Calvin Bowman and a brass ensemble of trumpets\, horn\, trombone and tuba. \nWe all love the familiar\, traditional music of Christmas\, but the concert also includes some less familiar works\, including two different tellings of the Nativity story in Poulenc’s joyful Christmas Motets and the charming Christmas Cantata with organ and brass instruments by Daniel Pinkham. The Poulenc motets and some other works will feature the MBC Chamber Choir with our Scholars as conductors. The highlight for many will of course be the familiar carols\, accompanied by brass and with some opportunities for audience participation. \nSaturday 2 December at 7.30pm\, St Andrew’s Church\, New St\, Brighton \nSaturday 9 December at 2.30pm\, Ballarat Central Uniting Church\, Lydiard St S \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation and Bookings (concessions apply): http://www.mbc.asn.au/mbc-concerts \n$25 – $45

SUMMARY:Fauré Requiem and works by Debussy\, Ravel\, Saint Saëns and Fauré
DESCRIPTION:This concert combines Fauré’s sublime Requiem\, one of the best-loved of all choral works\, with shorter secular pieces from the French repertoire.\nDebussy’s sensitive settings of 15th century poems by Charles d’Orleans contrast with Ravel’s exquisite Trois Chansons\, where both the composer’s own texts and music are full of archaic references. Fauré’s witty Madrigal and a selection of Saint-Saëns’ expressive songs complete the program.\nRick Prakhoff conducts the Melbourne Bach Choir and Orchestra\, with soloists Emilia Bertolini\, soprano\, and Jeremy Kleeman bass-baritone. \nThis concert program will also be performed on Sunday 30 June 2019 at 2.30pm\, at Ballarat Central Uniting Church\, 103 Lydiard St S\, Ballarat Central Tickets at www.trybooking.com/BBRBK

SUMMARY:Brahms German Requiem / Szymanowski Stabat Mater
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Bach Choir & Orchestra conducted by Rick Prakhoff present a special Easter concert at Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.  Distinguished soloists will be Lorina Gore\, soprano; Belinda Paterson\, mezzo-soprano; and Warwick Fyfe\, baritone. \nFollowing the success of OA’s recent production of King Roger by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski\, his rarely performed Stabat Mater is paired with the much loved German Requiem by Johannes Brahms. \nThe six short movements of Szymanowski’s expressive masterpiece invoke Polish folk elements and echoes of early counterpoint\, in a highly personal setting.  Brahms’ choice of text for the Requiem was also individualistic\, focussing on a more humanist rather than overtly Christian take on the concept of the end of life\, in this deeply felt and dramatic work.

SUMMARY:Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Sergei Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil (often called “Vespers”) \, first performed in Moscow in 1915\, is remarkably different from the late Romantic piano music for which he is generally known. These settings of the Russian Orthodox Vespers and morning service blend ancient Slavonic chants with richly expressive harmony. \n\n\nIn this concert\, Rachmaninov’s a cappella masterpiece is juxtaposed to excerpts from J.S.Bach’s solo cello suites\, played by Chris Howlett. \n\n The Melbourne Bach Chamber Choir\, with soloists Emily Bauer-Jones (mezzo-soprano) and Timothy Reynolds (tenor)\, is conducted by Rick Prakhoff.\n\n\n\nTickets available from www.trybooking.com/PVKD\, Adults $55\, Concession $45\, Student $25\n\n\n\n
