SUMMARY:The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra opens their 2025 concert season with two spectacular Hungarian works. \n\n\n\n\nZoltán Kodály spent seven years of his childhood in Galánta where he heard small bands playing folk music at army recruitment events. These performances — consisting of alternating slow and then very fast dances — were designed to enthuse the listener to join in the fun…and enlist! Kodaly’s Dances of Galánta is full of traditional Hungarian folk dances\, written in this verbunkos (recruiting) style. \nThe concert will end with one of the 20th century’s orchestral masterpieces: Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. This is perhaps the most accessible of Bartok’s works and\, as the title suggests\, displays virtuosic parts for every section of the orchestra. Eastern European folk tunes feature throughout\, as well as comic interludes and the most frenzied of orchestral-repertoire finales. \nJust before the interval\, the Orchestra will be joined by Joshua Jones (winner of the 2023 Conservatorium’s Concerto/Aria competition)\, to perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1. \n\n\n\nSunday 30 March 5:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time  1 hour 45 minutes (including 20 min interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: Free \n

DESCRIPTION:Controversy still surrounds Shostakovich’s 1937 Fifth Symphony and whether it was intended as a parodic display against Stalin or a cowering conformist’s response to the recently banned Fourth Symphony — which audiences would have to wait another 25 years to hear. \n\n\n\n\nEither way\, the premiere of the Fifth Symphony was an overwhelming success which appealed to both the public – some of whom openly wept during the largo movement – and the Union of Soviet Composer bureaucrats. However\, there was official concern at how tumultuous the applause was and whether the 30-minute standing ovation was actually a public condemnation of how the composer was being treated by the Soviet Regime. Shostakovich created a perfect bittersweet balance between joy and sorrow and with its comedic second movement and triumphant finale\, it continues to please audiences today and remains one of Shostakovich’s most performed and beloved works. \nBefore the interval the ensemble will perform Dvorak’s sublime (and symphonically scaled) Cello Concerto in B minor\, which was inspired by a trip the composer took to Niagara Falls. When he saw the spectacle\, Dvorak exclaimed “now there is a symphony in b minor!” After the first performance\, the concerto was dubbed Dvorak’s tenth symphony…but it was a surprise (even to the composer) that he wrote it at all as he previously considered the cello (with its “nasal high register and mumbling bass”) not worthy to warrant a concerto! The soloist\, Caleb Wong was a previous winner of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Concerto Aria competition. Caleb continued his studies at Northwestern University in the US and has returned to Melbourne to join the cello section of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. DESCRIPTION:Experience The University of Melbourne Wind Symphony concert\, featuring horn soloist Carla Blackwood.\nJoin The University of Melbourne Wind Symphony for their first concert of the academic season featuring Faculty member and horn soloist Carla Blackwood who will be premiering a concerto by Ukrainian-Australian composer Catherine Likhuta. \nThe concert will begin with a spark of sound out of the silence with Ryan George’s Firefly. Then\, the colour and tonal language of Julie Giroux’s The Hearthstone captures the deep ambers and warmth of a burning fire. In this vein\, the centerpiece of the concert\, Likhuta’s Sure-fire (a three-movement work) laments Australia’s recent bushfires. As if in a dream\, the concert continues painting a picture of better times with William Grant Still’s Summerland\, followed by David Maslanka’s Traveler that will leave the listener in reflection.
