SUMMARY:Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Leningrad Symphony
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne presents their last concert of 2025. \n\n\n\n\nDuring World War II\, the siege of Leningrad lasted 872 days and claimed over a million lives — most from starvation and cold. In response to the unimaginable suffering around him\, Dmitri Shostakovich began composing his Leningrad Symphony while still living in the city. \nShostakovich was later airlifted out for the premiere in March 1942\, before the microfilmed score made its way via Tehran and Cairo to London. There\, Sir Henry Wood conducted its first Western performance\, followed soon after by Arturo Toscanini in New York. With its terrifying invasion theme and elegiac undertones\, the symphony became a global symbol of resilience and defiance in the face of Nazi aggression. \nThis concert will begin with Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten — a moving tribute from one composer to another. The Orchestra will then welcome soprano Ruth Blythman\, winner of the 2024 Conservatorium Solo Artist Competition\, for a performance of Strauss’s Four Last Songs — a hauntingly beautiful meditation on death\, written shortly before Strauss’s own passing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 28 September 5:00 PM\n\n\nRunning TimeApprox. 130 minutes including a 20-minute interval \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE – Bookings required

SUMMARY:The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Pictures at an Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Three vibrant\, and evocatively descriptive works will be performed as part of The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concert this August. \n\n\n\n\nThe first half invites you to journey across the sea through the eyes of two great composers. In  Peter Grimes\, Benjamin Britten conjures dark and brooding seascapes — from the pale hush of  Dawn and the bustling life of a Sunday Morning market\, to the shimmering calm of Moonlight and the fury of the Storm. \nWhile Britten uses the sea as a backdrop to his opera’s characters\, Claude Debussy treats the sea as the central protagonist in La Mer. You’ll hear whispers and roars\, a conversation with the sea and the wind\, the rise and fall of waves and the weight and wonder of water. Both works shimmer with musical onomatopoeia — painting the sea in sound. \nThe second half offers a different kind of description — this time\, a promenade through an art gallery. Originally written for piano\, Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was later orchestrated by Ravel into one of the most beloved treasures of the concert hall. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 31 August 5:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time 97 minutes\, including a 20 min interval (after La Mer) \n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nFREE\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Scene
DESCRIPTION:oin The University of Melbourne Wind Symphony for a concert of musical storytelling.\nMelbourne-native and composer\, Mary Finsterer’s Nextwave Fanfare is a child’s anticipation of something unexpected and a bit monstrous. \nThe next work\, The Low-Down Brown Get-Down by Omar Thomas\, quotes musical styles like funk\, R&B\, soul\, early hip hop\, blues\, and even film noir to stitch together its ‘scenes.’ \nEvoking the vast American landscape\, Aaron Copland’s The Red Pony Film Suite is a soundscape from the film version of John Steinbeck’s novella\, The Red Pony\, which tells the tale of a boy’s life on a Californian ranch. \nTo end the concert with a spectacle\, the ensemble presents Julie Giroux’s Symphony No.6 ‘The Blue Marble’\, which is a musical cinematic tour around the globe and will be played alongside a movie. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThe University of Melbourne Wind Symphony \nJackie Hartenberger conductor \nMary Finsterer Nextwave Fanfare  \nOmar Thomas The Low-Down Brown Get-Down \nAaron Copland The Red Pony Film Suite \nJulie Giroux Symphony No.6 ‘The Blue Marble’ \n\n\nSunday 25 May 2025 – 5:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra opens their 2025 concert season with two spectacular Hungarian works. \n\n\n\n\nZoltán Kodály spent seven years of his childhood in Galánta where he heard small bands playing folk music at army recruitment events. These performances — consisting of alternating slow and then very fast dances — were designed to enthuse the listener to join in the fun…and enlist! Kodaly’s Dances of Galánta is full of traditional Hungarian folk dances\, written in this verbunkos (recruiting) style. \nThe concert will end with one of the 20th century’s orchestral masterpieces: Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. This is perhaps the most accessible of Bartok’s works and\, as the title suggests\, displays virtuosic parts for every section of the orchestra. Eastern European folk tunes feature throughout\, as well as comic interludes and the most frenzied of orchestral-repertoire finales. \nJust before the interval\, the Orchestra will be joined by Joshua Jones (winner of the 2023 Conservatorium’s Concerto/Aria competition)\, to perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1. \n\n\n\nSunday 30 March 5:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time 1 hour 45 minutes (including 20 min interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: Free \n

SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Controversy still surrounds Shostakovich’s 1937 Fifth Symphony and whether it was intended as a parodic display against Stalin or a cowering conformist’s response to the recently banned Fourth Symphony — which audiences would have to wait another 25 years to hear. \n\n\n\n\nEither way\, the premiere of the Fifth Symphony was an overwhelming success which appealed to both the public – some of whom openly wept during the largo movement – and the Union of Soviet Composer bureaucrats. However\, there was official concern at how tumultuous the applause was and whether the 30-minute standing ovation was actually a public condemnation of how the composer was being treated by the Soviet Regime. Shostakovich created a perfect bittersweet balance between joy and sorrow and with its comedic second movement and triumphant finale\, it continues to please audiences today and remains one of Shostakovich’s most performed and beloved works. \nBefore the interval the ensemble will perform Dvorak’s sublime (and symphonically scaled) Cello Concerto in B minor\, which was inspired by a trip the composer took to Niagara Falls. When he saw the spectacle\, Dvorak exclaimed “now there is a symphony in b minor!” After the first performance\, the concerto was dubbed Dvorak’s tenth symphony…but it was a surprise (even to the composer) that he wrote it at all as he previously considered the cello (with its “nasal high register and mumbling bass”) not worthy to warrant a concerto! The soloist\, Caleb Wong was a previous winner of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Concerto Aria competition. Caleb continued his studies at Northwestern University in the US and has returned to Melbourne to join the cello section of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. We welcome him back to celebrate his achievements and also to claim his competition prize of performing with The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nSunday 22 September 5:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time 2 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A limit of 2 tickets per transaction applies.\nFREE \nPlease note: Limit of 2 tickets per transaction.

Then\, the colour and tonal language of Julie Giroux’s The Hearthstone captures the deep ambers and warmth of a burning fire. In this vein\, the centerpiece of the concert\, Likhuta’s Sure-fire (a three-movement work) laments Australia’s recent bushfires. As if in a dream\, the concert continues painting a picture of better times with William Grant Still’s Summerland\, followed by David Maslanka’s Traveler that will leave the listener in reflection. The concert closes with some old ragtime energy from Scott Joplin with Maple Leaf Rag\, a new arrangement by Andrew Blair. \nEach piece in this gallery of music has a unique shape from start to finish. \n\nSaturday 20 April 2024 7.30pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: This event is free\, however\, tickets are required for entry.
