SUMMARY:Lyric Opera and Theatre Works: Iphis
DESCRIPTION:Elena Kats-Chernin’s first opera\, IPHIS\, is a 70-minute chamber work written for 6 singers and 9-piece chamber orchestra.\n\nBased on Ovid’s METAMORPHOSIS\, with a libretto by Richard Toop\, Iphis is forced to grow up in secret as a boy due to her overbearing father who only wants to have sons in his family. Years later\, the ruse starts to unravel as Iphis’ father presents the Ianthe as a budding bride to his supposed son. As they fall in love\, they are faced with finding their own way forwards and becoming the people they were meant to be. IPHIS shines a light onto the subject of gender\, relationships\, and identity in modern society. Musically the work is a rich pastiche drawing on the cabaret traditions of Les Six and Kurt Weill\, with echoes of Mozart and Stravinsky. \nLyric is a bold and creative opera company committed to developing operatic artists and enriching the understanding of what opera can be. Under the direction of Katy Maudlin (SLAP. BANG. KISS.\, Right Now\, Antigone X)\, with designs by the wildly creative Brynna Lowen\, lighting by the multi-award winning Richard Vabre\, and conducted by Lyric’s new Artistic Director – Patrick Burns\, this production will entertain and move audiences in equal measure. Lyric was the winner of the 2019 Green Room Award for Contribution to the Development of Opera in Victoria. \n\nVENUE: Theatre Works \n\n\nDURATION: 75 Minutes (No Interval) \n\n\nWARNINGS: Mild Language Warning \n\n\nDATES & TIMES \n\n\nFriday 26 August\, 7:30pm (Opening Night)\nSaturday 27 August\, 2:30pm (Matinee)\nTuesday 30 August\, 7:30pm\nWednesday 31 August\, 7:30pm\nThursday 1 September\, 7:30pm\nFriday 2 September\, 7:30pm\nSaturday 3 September\, 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera: Unlucky Love: The Music of Peggy Glanville Hicks
DESCRIPTION:Peggy Glanville-Hicks was one of Australia’s most internationally recognised composers during the 20th century\, especially for her operatic and dance-based works. Many critics and artists agree that some of her best music is found in her art-song compositions. Her art-song compositions continue the traditions of English art-song and you can hear in her early songs the influence of her teachers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Fritz Hart whilst still developing a unique and charming harmonic language of her own. Often the songs are compact miniatures with beautiful settings of the text\, which occasionally offer a brief insight into her often difficult and challenging private life. \nJoin us for Lyric’s first concert for 2022\, where we will be presenting all Glanville-Hick’s surviving art-song compositions for voice and piano. The music spans her early years studying in Melbourne and London through to her middle years while she was living in New York. Sadly\, most of the music is unknown to modern audiences and some of the works have never been officially published. It will be a wonderful evening to explore\, experience\, and celebrate the art song of one of Australia’s truly great composers in her 110th anniversary year.

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera: Our Man in Havana
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyric Opera of Melbourne for a Cuban comedy / spy thriller operatic experience! Complete with bar\, showgirls and a vacuum cleaner salesman\, the black comic masterpiece Our Man in Havana comes to Melbourne as part of the Fringe Festival this September. \nComposed by one of Australia’s most lauded and outrageous ex-pat composers Malcolm Williamson\, Our Man in Havana is based on Graham Greene’s novel\, and the Alec Guinness film of the same name. Set in Cuba during the era that saw both the Cold War and Cuban Missile Crisis “our man” is an unlikely recruit to the British Secret Service. But with a struggling business as a vacuum cleaner salesman and a daughter who loves to spend\, when his country needs him will ‘our man’ answer the call? \nDirected by Suzanne Chaundy\, Our Man in Havana has an outstanding cast featuring much acclaimed opera singer and Cats star Jason Wasley\, joined by international soprano Elizabeth Stannard and baritone Michael Leighton Jones. The cast includes Lyric favourites Kate Amos and Matt Thomas and an ensemble of upcoming singers\, all conducted by Lyric’s Artistic Director\, Pat Miller. \nOur Man in Havana is unlike any opera you will have ever seen or heard: beautiful lyrical ballads mingle with the rhythms of Latin America and modernism. Lyric is pushing the boundaries of the art form and in the spirit of the Buena Vista Social Club\, are creating an immersive opera cabaret experience. \nOur Man in Havana will be performed Saturday 17\, Tuesday 20\, Thursday 22 and Saturday 24 September at 7.30pm\, at Athenaeum 2 (The Comedy Club)\, 188 Collins Street\, Melbourne. \nTickets can be purchased through Ticketek\, or through the Melbourne Fringe Festival at 03 9660 9666 or melbournefringe.com.au. Ticket prices range from $40-$70. \nMore information at lyricopera.com.au.

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera presents Il Signor Bruschino
DESCRIPTION:Escape the dreary Melbourne weather this June as Lyric Opera of Melbourne takes you on a Roman holiday with Il Signor Bruschino – a sparkling one-act comedy by the beloved Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. \n  \nThis early work of Rossini was composed for an intimate Venice theatre in 1813 and will be right at home at Chapel off Chapel in Prahran. \n  \nThe comedy unravels as two lovers attempt to deceive their elders in order to marry… with more plot twists than a bowl of spaghetti. The production will be sung in English so that everyone can enjoy the comedy. \n  \nThis tale of intentionally-mistaken identity will be brought to the stage by an exciting team of young Melbourne theatre makers led by Lara Kerestes\, under the mentorship of director Suzanne Chaundy as part of the inaugural Opera Director’s Workshop. \n  \nRossini’s score is packed with vivacious and inventive music performed by an exceptional Melbourne cast led by Shanul Sharma\, the former thrash metal singer who returns to Lyric Opera after his success in Werther.  The cast also includes much loved Lyric Opera artists Rebecca Rashleigh\, Bruce Raggatt and Matt Thomas. The chamber orchestra will be conducted by Lyric Opera’s Artistic Director\, Pat Miller. \n  \nAt just over an hour in length\, Lyric Opera’s brand new production will be a great night at the theatre for first time and seasoned opera goers alike. \n  \nIl Signor Bruschino is showing Monday 6th\, Wednesday 8th\, Thursday 9th and Saturday 11th June at 7.30pm and Sunday 12th June at 2.30pm\, at Chapel off Chapel\, 12 Little Chapel St\, Prahran. \n  \nTickets can be purchased here  or by calling 03 8290 7000 and start from only $29\, making opera accessible for everyone.

SUMMARY:Pygmalion. Jean-Philippe Rameau.
DESCRIPTION:Rameau’s one act opera Pygmalion (1748) is an audacious riff on the tale of artist who falls in love with their art. Based on the play by Ovid\, which inspired George Bernard Shaw’s play which in turn inspired ‘My Fair Lady’\, Pygmalion is baroque opera at its most irreverent and fun. Pygmalion is a sculptor cursed to fall in love with his creation but ‘love’ brings the statue to life\, and everyone dances. Rameau brings this story to life with music of great originality and excitement in a work that is equal parts opera and ballet.\n\nLyric brings the opera to the stage with an exceptional creative team with direction by James Cutler\, choreography by Georgia Taylor\, design by Rob Sowinski with music direction by Pat Miller. Performances at Lyric’s home at Chapel off Chapel will include both early and late shows so Pygmalion can be the perfect entrée or nightcap to your evening out.\n\n\nThere is now an event created you can promote and share:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1065620243479683/
