SUMMARY:Lyric Opera of Melbourne: Songs of Devotion & Desire
DESCRIPTION:If you’re feeling the pace of the world right now\, this is your invitation to step away for a moment. \nOur first concert of the year\, Songs of Devotion and Desire\, is this Sunday. A 75-minute\, no interval concert of powerful\, deeply human music\, centred on three of Benjamin Britten’s Canticles\,presented in the 50th anniversary year of his death\, alongside the world premieres of Kevin March’s Sacred Songs. \nAn intimate concert centred on Benjamin Britten’s extraordinary Canticles – miniature dramas that distill complex emotional and spiritual themes into concentrated musical forms. \nOften described as “operas in miniature”\, Britten’s Canticles serve as profound psychological portraits. They trace themes of love\, sacrifice\, transcendence and doubt\, revealing the fragile boundary between the sacred and the deeply human. \nBritten openly acknowledged that Henry Purcell’s Divine Hymns provided the creative impulse for the Canticles – part of his broader engagement with the English Baroque tradition established by Purcell and later shaped by Handel. \nIn a powerful contemporary response\, Lyric Opera of Melbourne will present the World Premieres of Sacred Songs Books I & II by Australian composer Kevin March. Presented in dialogue with Britten’s Canticles\, March’s new works offer deeply personal reflections on faith and meaning in the modern world. \nArtists: Louis Hurley – Tenor; Olivia Federow-Yemm – Mezzo-soprano; Abbie Edlin – French Horn; Stefan Cassomenos – Piano \nBenjamin Britten \nCanticle I: My beloved is mine and I am his\, Op. 40 \nCanticle II: Abraham and Isaac\, Op. 51 \nCanticle III: Still Falls the Rain\, Op. 55 \nKevin March \nSacred Songs Book I (World Premiere) \nSacred Songs Book II (World Premiere) \nSunday 12 April\, 3pm\nChurch of All Nations\, Carlton \nTickets are available below or can be purchased at the door on the day. \nWe’d love to see you there. \nLyric Opera of Melbourne \nTICKETS: $50 – $40\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Tickets

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera The Children's Bach
DESCRIPTION:The Children’s Bach – music by andrew schultz | libretto by glenn perry | based on the novella of the same name by helen garner\n\n\nSet on the banks of Merri Creek in suburban Melbourne in the 1990s\, The Children’s Bach centres on Dexter and Athena Fox\, their son\, and the insulated world they’ve built together. When a friend from Dexter’s past resurfaces and introduces the couple to the city’s bohemian underground\, Athena begins to wonder if life might hold more for her\, and the tenuous bonds that tie the Foxes together start to fray. It is a piece about love in its many forms. \nGiven the metaphorical weight music is given in Helen Garner’s work\, containing many references to music\, both classical and popular\, it is no wonder that the novella lends itself so well to becoming an opera. The music is beautiful\, powerful\, complex\, and haunting. It faithfully recreates the novel’s inner-suburban world. The score plays on the book’s musical references while remaining utterly original. It employs everything from jazz-inspired riffs to fugal structure to accompany the progression of romantic entanglements. Performed by seven singers\, and a chamber orchestra of six players\, in the words of Michael Halliwell “the opera is an evocative meditation on the messiness and complexity of human relationships…” It is a profound and masterful contemporary chamber opera that is engaging and thought-provoking. \nUnder the leadership of Artistic Director Patrick Burns\, this is the third production of an outstanding Australian chamber opera performed at Theatre Works by Lyric Opera. First was the acclaimed and multi-award winning Iphis in 2022 followed by the equally lauded and critical triumph Biographica in 2023. The Children’s Bach features a cast of some of Victoria’s finest established and emerging opera artists including Kate Amos\, Michael Honeyman\, Adrian Li Donni\, Juel Rigall\, Lucy Schneider\, Chloe Taylor and Ben and Chris Touzel\, directed by Katy Maudlin\, designed by Jacob Battista and conducted by Patrick Burns.\nThis opera was commissioned and premiered in 2008 by Chamber Made. This will be the second full production of the work. \nFriday 30 August – 7:30pm (Preview)\nSaturday 31 August – 7:30pm (Opening Night)\nTuesday 3 September – 7:30pm\nWednesday 4 September – 7:3pm\nThursday 5 September – 7:30pm\nFriday 6 September – 7:30pm\nSaturday 7 September – 7:30pm \nTheatre Works\, 14 Acland Street\, St Kilda \nTICKETS: $0 – $63.98

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera: Biographica
DESCRIPTION:Hot on the heels of Lyric Opera’s multi-award-winning hit production Iphis is the Victorian premiere of Biographica. This 2017 Australian opera is composed by Mary Finsterer with libretto by Tom Wright was the winner of the 2018 APRA|AMCOS Art Music Award for Vocal Work. Scored for eleven musicians\, five singers and one actor\, Biographica blends spoken and sung text with shimmering orchestral colours in a contemporary reinterpretation of the essence of the Italian Renaissance. \nCentred on the real life of Gerolamo Cardano\, a sixteenth century scientist\, mathematician\, linguist and gambler\, this opera is a poignant exploration of the psyche of a man whose brilliance and ‘self destructive’ nature coexisted in a captivating and devastating dance. Cardano’s ground-breaking contributions to the realm of probability\, innovations in sign language and the invention of the combination lock\, have left an indelible mark on history. Beneath the surface of his profound achievements lay an enigmatic and often tormented soul. This opera interrogates the question of what really made a ‘renaissance man’. \nBiographica is a new production created by the multi-award-winning team of Heather Fairbairn (Director)\, Niklas Pajanti (Lighting Designer)\, Savanna Wegmann (Set & Costume Design) and Lyric’s Artistic Director\, Patrick Burns (Conductor). \nFri 22 Sep 7:30pm (Preview); Sat 23 Sep 7:30pm (Opening); Tue 26 Sep 7:30pm; Thu 28 Sep 7:30pm\nSat 30 Sep 7:30pm; Sun 1 Oct 2:30pm       Approx duration: 90 minutes \nTICKETS: Full price $48.24incl. A$3.24 Fee; concession $37.74incl. A$2.74 Fee or $20 \nLocation: Theatre Works\, 14 Acland Street\, St Kilda

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera and Theatre Works: Iphis
DESCRIPTION:Elena Kats-Chernin’s first opera\, IPHIS\, is a 70-minute chamber work written for 6 singers and 9-piece chamber orchestra.\n\nBased on Ovid’s METAMORPHOSIS\, with a libretto by Richard Toop\, Iphis is forced to grow up in secret as a boy due to her overbearing father who only wants to have sons in his family. Years later\, the ruse starts to unravel as Iphis’ father presents the Ianthe as a budding bride to his supposed son. As they fall in love\, they are faced with finding their own way forwards and becoming the people they were meant to be. IPHIS shines a light onto the subject of gender\, relationships\, and identity in modern society. Musically the work is a rich pastiche drawing on the cabaret traditions of Les Six and Kurt Weill\, with echoes of Mozart and Stravinsky. \nLyric is a bold and creative opera company committed to developing operatic artists and enriching the understanding of what opera can be. Under the direction of Katy Maudlin (SLAP. BANG. SUMMARY:Lyric Opera: Unlucky Love: The Music of Peggy Glanville Hicks
DESCRIPTION:Peggy Glanville-Hicks was one of Australia’s most internationally recognised composers during the 20th century\, especially for her operatic and dance-based works. Many critics and artists agree that some of her best music is found in her art-song compositions. Her art-song compositions continue the traditions of English art-song and you can hear in her early songs the influence of her teachers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Fritz Hart whilst still developing a unique and charming harmonic language of her own. Often the songs are compact miniatures with beautiful settings of the text\, which occasionally offer a brief insight into her often difficult and challenging private life. \nJoin us for Lyric’s first concert for 2022\, where we will be presenting all Glanville-Hick’s surviving art-song compositions for voice and piano. The music spans her early years studying in Melbourne and London through to her middle years while she was living in New York. Sadly\, most of the music is unknown to modern audiences and some of the works have never been officially published. It will be a wonderful evening to explore\, experience\, and celebrate the art song of one of Australia’s truly great composers in her 110th anniversary year.

SUMMARY:Lyric Opera presents Il Signor Bruschino
DESCRIPTION:Escape the dreary Melbourne weather this June as Lyric Opera of Melbourne takes you on a Roman holiday with Il Signor Bruschino – a sparkling one-act comedy by the beloved Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. \n  \nThis early work of Rossini was composed for an intimate Venice theatre in 1813 and will be right at home at Chapel off Chapel in Prahran. \n  \nThe comedy unravels as two lovers attempt to deceive their elders in order to marry… with more plot twists than a bowl of spaghetti. The production will be sung in English so that everyone can enjoy the comedy. \n  \nThis tale of intentionally-mistaken identity will be brought to the stage by an exciting team of young Melbourne theatre makers led by Lara Kerestes\, under the mentorship of director Suzanne Chaundy as part of the inaugural Opera Director’s Workshop. \n  \nRossini’s score is packed with vivacious and inventive music performed by an exceptional Melbourne cast led by Shanul Sharma\, the former thrash metal singer who returns to Lyric Opera after his success in Werther.  The cast also includes much loved Lyric Opera artists Rebecca Rashleigh\, Bruce Raggatt and Matt Thomas. The chamber orchestra will be conducted by Lyric Opera’s Artistic Director\, Pat Miller. \n  \nAt just over an hour in length\, Lyric Opera’s brand new production will be a great night at the theatre for first time and seasoned opera goers alike. \n  \nIl Signor Bruschino is showing Monday 6th\, Wednesday 8th\, Thursday 9th and Saturday 11th June at 7.30pm and Sunday 12th June at 2.30pm\, at Chapel off Chapel\, 12 Little Chapel St\, Prahran. \n  \nTickets can be purchased here  or by calling 03 8290 7000 and start from only $29\, making opera accessible for everyone.
