SUMMARY:Heidelberg Symphony 2019 | Concert 3: New Horizons
DESCRIPTION:New Horizons reveals sounds of new worlds while drawing on colours of the past. Soloist in residence Natsuko Yoshimoto returns to the HSO as custodian of ‘The Adelaide’ violin\, performing Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto\, a work whose forms echo the Baroque era\, while its themes are alive with a multitude of Stravinsky’s spectacular tricks.  Michael Daugherty’s Radio City (2011) is a large-scale symphonic tribute to fiery conductor Toscanini. The score traces his move from celebrated director of the famous La Scala\, to the brave new world of New York and the NBC Symphony Orchestra in the late 1930s. Explore the expansiveness and migration of musical ideas across time and place.

SUMMARY:Heidelberg Symphony: Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Kopke | Conductor\nGuest Artist: Anne Gilby | OboeSaint-Säens Bacchanale from Samson & Delilah\nKetèlbey Sanctuary of the Heart\nHaydn Oboe Concerto in C Major\nBellini Oboe Concerto in Eb Major\nCopland The Tender Land Suite\nBernstein Slava! A Political Overture  \nKetèlbey’s Sanctuary of the Heart is based on an old melody used as the traditional chant for the Kol Nidrei during the Jewish liturgy. Saint-Säens’ Bacchanale is a percussion-driven\, celebratory dance from Samson & Delilah\, the only one of his operas still regularly performed. \nHaydn’s Oboe Concerto has many long phrases\, requiring dexterity and stamina from the soloist. The lyrical writing in Bellini’s Oboe Concerto is so indicative of his style that one could easily believe it to belong to one of his operas. \nCopland’s The Tender Land Suite is a simple story of a young woman’s coming of age\, richly painted with his quintessential American harmonies. Finally\, in celebration of Bernstein’s Centenary this year\, Slava! A Political Overture is a vaudevillian razzamatazz tune\, filled with amazing modulations and sliding trombones.

SUMMARY:Heidelberg Symphony Presents: European Masters
DESCRIPTION:In September celebrate spring with a sparkling programme guaranteed to lighten your step: Greig’s charming Symphonic Dances weaves memorable themes from several Norwegian folk dances into a four movement suite. Soloist Roman Panormariov presents two wonderful works for Horn: Mozart’s Fourth Concerto is a virtuoso vehicle that showcases the soloist’s abilities and Richard Strauss’s first horn concerto is one of the most demanding solo works for Horn. \nThe calm tempo of Copland’s suite from the soundtrack to film “Our Town” provides a beautiful contrast with Prokofiev’s charming scenes from satirical opera “The Love of Three Oranges”.

SUMMARY:Heidelberg Symphony Presents: Love Mozart
DESCRIPTION:In this concert\, works from some of the 20th century’s most eminent composers are paired with the famous oboe concerto of Mozart. Oboist Anne Gilby\, debuting with the Heidelberg Symphony\, will present two works: Swedish composer Soderlundh’s Concertino complementing the sparkling concerto Mozart wrote for his friend\, the famous oboist Friedrich Ramm. Two wonderful mid-century orchestral suites complete the programme. The first\, by Malcolm Arnold\, was drawn from his award-winning soundtrack to 1958 film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Full of memorable themes and ingenious combinations of textures\, it has become one of the best known of his hundred-or-so movie scores. This work provides an ideal foil to the sense of colour\, mystery and surprise conveyed in Britten’s beguiling orchestral suite from opera Gloriana. The suite includes a series of key scenes from the opera\, which focuses on the life of Elizabeth I: The bracing Tournament music which opens the opera; the haunting Second Lute Song; the wonderfully neo-tudor Courtly Dances; and the opera’s dark epilogue – Gloriana Moritura.
