SUMMARY:Heidelberg Choral Society: J.S. Bach - Mass in B Minor
DESCRIPTION:A Cathedral in Sound : Bach’s Mass in B minor \nBach’s Mass in B minor is an awe-inspiring\, massive work and one that is seldom performed. But on 31 August\, Heidelberg Choral Society will present a Melbourne performance of this compelling and uplifting Mass. Commenced in 1733\, composed over a 25-year period and finished in the very last years of Bach’s life\, his Mass in B minor has been described as a ‘cathedral in sound’.  Lofty in design\, scope and expression\, and written during Bach’s time as Cantor of Leipzig\, the Mass was not performed complete until 1859\, more than a century after Bach’s death. \nUnder the baton of conductor Peter Bandy\, the Heidelberg Choral Society and Orchestra will perform one concert only on 31 August. \nSoloists are : Elena Xanthoudakis (soprano); Liane Keegan (contralto); Robert Macfarlane (tenor) and Christopher Hillier (baritone). \nBach’s Mass in B Minor is sublime; a significant work\, comprehensively stunning in its emotional depth and universal appeal. Don’t miss your chance to hear Heidelberg Choral Society’s much-anticipated performance of an enduring Mass that Bach himself never heard in its entirety. \nDate :                    Sunday\, 31 August 2025 | 2.30pm \nVenue :                 Performing Arts Centre\, Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School \ncnr Noel St and Upper Heidelberg Rd\, Ivanhoe \nTicket prices :    $70  /  $65 conc  /  $45 student \nBookings :           www.trybooking.com/DBWST \nSponsor               Heidelberg Choral Society is proudly supported by the Joe White Bequest \nWebsite               www.hcs.asn.au

SUMMARY:Contrasting works by Jenkins and Puccini
DESCRIPTION:Heidelberg Choral Society and Orchestra are proud to present the Australian Premiere performance of Karl Jenkins’ major new work\, Symphonic Adiemus. This iconic work for choir and unusual percussions will be contrasted with the popular Messa di Gloria of Giacomo Puccini. \nSince it was first heard in 1994\, Karl Jenkins’s work has captured the imaginations of music-lovers worldwide thanks to its unique combination of classical principles with the flavors of the world and ethnic music. The first release in the series\, Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary\, has sold over 1.5 million albums worldwide \nSymphonic Adiemus\, which received its first UK performance in London in late 2017\, is a challenging and innovative work\, drawing on and extending earlier works. Through his use of invented language\, unusual rhythms and extensive and rarely-heard percussion Jenkins pushes the boundaries of new music development. \nUnashamedly operatic\, the young Puccini’s Messa di Gloria reflects the influence of Puccini’s hero\, Verdi\, and provides a foretaste of his later major works. The joyous themes which run throughout the work complement the exuberant nature of Jenkin’s work\, and provide an orchestral contrast which will make this a concert not to be missed. \nSoloists Nathan Lay (baritone) and Timothy Reynold (tenor) also feature in the program. \n

SUMMARY:Carmina Burana and Liebeslieder Waltzes
DESCRIPTION:Come to hear the splendid works of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Brahms’ Liebeslider Waltzes. \nThe Heidelberg Choral Society\, under the direction of Peter Bandy\, will be joined on stage by eminent soloists Margaret Orr (Soprano)\, David Rogers-Smith (Tenor) and Simon Meadows (Baritone). \n“Carmina Burana was first staged in Germany in 1937”\, says Peter Bandy\, HCS’s Musical Director. \n“It quickly gained popularity\, and today is a classic in any choir’s repertoire. O Fortuna has to be the best known and probably the most dramatic opening chorus of any choral work.” \nThe collection of love songs that comprise Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes have text taken from Daumer’s Polydora. \n“From their composition in 1869\, these gentle love poems and folk songs have been incredibly popular”\, says Peter. “They are a delight to sing.”

SUMMARY:Judas Maccabaeus
DESCRIPTION:Heidelberg Choral Society presents Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. Peter Bandy will conduct the choir\, along with acclaimed orchestra and soloists: Jacqueline Porter\, Sally-Anne Russell\, Nicholas Jones and Simon Meadows. \nHandel’s Judas Maccabaeus contains glorious melodies.  Written as a compliment to the victorious Prince William Augustus\, Duke of Cumberland\, upon his return from the Battle of Culloden\,  Judas Maccabaeus  remains one of Handel’s most popular oratorios.  Handel composed this oratorio at sixty one years of age in 1746\, five years after Messiah. It was first performed in London at the Covent Garden Theatre the following year. \nWith libretto by Thomas Morell\, this three act oratorio takes us on an emotional journey with the Jewish people as they rise up against the Seleucid Empire seeking to destroy their faith\, resulting in a jubilant victory as the Temple is restored and peace reigns.  The most well-known chorus  See\, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes!\, composed during the summer of 1747 for his next oratorio Joshua\, was so popular Handel added it to Judas Maccabaeus. \n
