SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – From Silence & Snow
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Mustonen\, Sibelius and Harrison in a dynamic dialogue across eras.\nThis program is as eclectic as it is rewarding. For Flinders Quartet violinist Wilma Smith\, Beethoven’s Op.18 No.4 marks a personal premiere after a lifetime of quartet playing\, its fiery spirit adding a special milestone to the season opener. \nFinland’s premier composer\, Olli Mustonen’s String Quartet No.2 receives its first southern hemisphere performance\, while Sibelius’ beloved Voces Intimae continues the Finnish X-factor of intimacy and atmosphere. \nCompleting the program is Holly Harrison’s Swoop\, a dazzlingly virtuosic and rhythmically inventive piece that has delighted audiences worldwide. As Wilma reflects\, ‘Beethoven\, Mustonen\, Harrison and Sibelius – they may seem like chalk and cheese but I think this program’s a real winner.’ \nFlinders Quartet: Elizabeth Sellars violin; Wilma Smith violin; Helen Ireland viola; Zoe Knighton cello \nLudwig van Beethoven  String Quartet No.4 in C minor\, Op.18 No.4 \nOlli Mustonen String Quartet No.2 * \nJean Sibelius String Quartet in D minor\, Op.56 Voces Intimae \nHolly Harrison Swoop \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 31 March 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Australia Fair?Fli
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 25th season concludes with Dvořák and works by Australian composers Cheetham Fraillon and Marks.\nAs Flinders Quartet celebrates their 25th anniversary\, they reflect on their identity as an Australian chamber ensemble\, curating a concert program of works in which the composers were likely pondering similar questions: who are we\, who were we\, and who do we want to be? \nFlinders Quartet revisit’s Deborah Cheetham Fraillon’s powerful and evocative string quartet\, Bungaree\, first premiered in 2020. Bungaree is a figure who should be an Australian household name\, and thanks to Deborah\, he is now part of Flinders Quartet idea of Australia’s\, and their own\, identity. \nAustralia Fair? by Bryony Marks asks us to think about very important and fundamental questions about identity. And Dvořák wrote his last chamber work\, the A flat string quartet\, at the very end of his time in America. Although he was inspired by the lush prairies and woods he was introduced to there\, his musical identity was still so connected to his love of the landscape of his homeland\, the Czech Republic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nArtists: Elizabeth Sellars Violin; Wilma Smith Violin; Helen Ireland Viola; Zoe Knighton Cello \nDeborah Cheetham Fraillon Bungaree  Commissioned by Flinders Quartet with support from Andrew Dixon\, in memory of Jean and John Dixon. \nBryony Marks Australia Fair? Volume I: ‘The Australian Dream’ \nAntonín Dvořák String Quartet No.14 in A flat Op.105 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 29 October 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet: Musical Friends
DESCRIPTION:Can music describe a person?\nFlinders Quartet explores this with new pieces by Eötvös\, Singh\, and Nicolas\, and Borodin’s second quartet. \nMendelssohn famously said\, ‘It’s not that music is too imprecise for words\, but too precise…’. Flinders Quartet has always loved this quote and decided to explore this idea by pairing two composers\, Melody Eötvös and Rishin Singh\, living on opposite sides of the world in a musical letter writing project. The premise being that one composer begins the conversation by writing a short section\, which is sent to the other composer who absorbs the music and writes a short section in return. Flinders Quartet are\, in effect\, the go-between. \nNatalie Nicolas’ By the Tide of the Moon captures the strength and beauty of Aida Tuciute\, a Lithuanian Olympic swimmer with a love of ocean swimming; while Borodin’s second quartet depicts the love of his wife and their first three glorious months of marriage spent in Heidelberg. The themes of love\, letter writing\, and communication through music are counterbalanced with the crystalline brilliance of Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, which celebrates the sheer joy of music for music’s sake alone. \nNatalie Nicolas By the Tide of the Moon – World premiere; Commissioned by Andrew Domasevicius-Zilinskas for Flinders Quartet and dedicated to Aida Tuciute\, and her beautiful kinship with the ocean. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, K.546 \nMelody Eötvös / Rishin Singh The Letter Writing Project – World premiere; Commissioned by Flinders Quartet with the support of Kim Williams AM and FQ Syndicate #6. \nAlexander Borodin String Quartet No.2 in D \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 12 August 2025 – 7:00pm \nMRC Salon \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet Flinders Quartet at Montsalvat – Paavali
DESCRIPTION:Paavali Jumppanen joins Flinders Quartet for their 25th anniversary\, featuring works by Bacewicz\, Shostakovich\, and Beethoven.\nMelbourne has been lucky to have extraordinary pianist\, Paavali Jumppanen\, in our musical community as Artistic Director at ANAM. He joins Flinders Quartet in the opening concert program of their 25th anniversary season for not just one piano quintet but two! Graznya Bacewicz was an accomplished pianist and violin virtuoso whose deep knowledge of the instruments as a performer shows itself in her writing. Her piano quintet is evidence of her immaculate skill and mediates between folkloric impulses and the rigour of classical principles\, creating a sound world which is constantly delivering moments of unexpected beauty. \nShostakovich was so busy performing his popular new piano quintet on tour with his friends of the Beethoven Quartet following its premiere in November 1940 that he hardly had time to compose for six months. Flinders Quartet sets up this wonderful piano feast with Beethoven’s short but powerful Op.95 F minor quartet ‘Serioso’\, written at a time of personal despair and the only one he named himself. \nElizabeth Sellars violin\nWilma Smith violin\nHelen Ireland viola\nZoe Knighton cello\nPaavali Jumppanen piano \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLudwig Van Beethoven String Quartet No.11 in F minor\, Op.95 \nGraznya Bacewicz Piano Quintet No.1 \nDmitri Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G minor\, Op.57 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 18 May 2025 – 2:30pm \nMontsalvat \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – The Mendelssohns
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 2024 season concludes with one of its trademark curations: letters between the Mendelssohns interwoven with compositions by the Mendelssohns\, Beethoven\, and Bryony Marks.\nFanny’s son\, Sebastian Hensel\, published a collection of family correspondence\, and together with other writings from Fanny\, this special performance sees the music of Felix explored through his sister’s eyes. \nTaking inspiration from Felix’s very successful and much loved incidental music for the play\, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’\, Bryony Marks has been commissioned to write her own incidental music linking together the dramatic and musical elements of this performance\, and connecting these characters and the music that defines them. Felix Mendelssohn was heavily influenced by Beethoven’s string quartets\, becoming infatuated with Opus 132 and copying it out note by note in his journal. Like Beethoven\, Mendelssohn’s string quartets track his life: from the optimism of his first string quartet\, Opus 12\, to the tragedy of the last\, Opus 80\, which was written in response to the death of Fanny. Both composers penned their final notes in their string quartets. \nRichard Piper has collaborated with Flinders Quartet on a number of previous projects including ‘Puck’s Dream (after Midsummer)’\, the Shostakovich cycle\, and ‘Bartok\, My Father.’ \n\nWednesday 30 October 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $45 ($35 Concession); Group 10+ $35; Student $35

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet at Montsalvat – Blueprint
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s August concerts feature Caroline Shaw’s ‘Blueprint’ and celebrate Beethoven’s inventiveness; his ‘blueprint’ for finding ingenious ways to discard the rules of traditional composition.\nBeethoven turned Western classical music on its head with his inventiveness\, setting a blueprint for future composers to follow in finding ingenious ways to discard the rules of traditional composition. The very popular American composer\, Caroline Shaw\, quite literally created a blueprint of Beethoven’s joyous and playful Opus 18 No. 6 quartet; her composition of the same name proves that the master is still at work inspiring composers today. \nIn Beethoven’s Opus 135\, his last quartet is characterised by the crazily whacky Scherzo movement with rhythmic tricks galore\, not to mention first violin acrobatics in the Trio\, followed by the devastatingly touching slow movement in the unexpected\, warm key of D flat major. This last quartet is certainly quite different from the ‘late’ quartets that preceded it; it’s often said that it marked the beginning of a new period for Beethoven\, but we’ll never know for sure. \nSunday 11 August 2024 2.30pm\nDuration: 1 hour 50 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change \nMontsalvat \nTICKETS: Standard $45 ($35 Concession); Group 10+ $35; Student $35

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 2024 season opens with ‘Legacy’: music that marks history in unique and poignant ways\, with works by Mozart\, Ethel Smyth\, and Gordon Kerry.\nMusic marks history in a unique and poignant way. Mozart’s legacy is epitomised in the Dissonance Quartet which is revered for its daring harmony that broke all the rules\, as well as its soaring melodies and sense of humour. Ethel Smyth’s first string quartet displays epic vision that combines rhythmic angularity with deeply intelligent and sophisticated lyricism\, no less groundbreaking than her inspired leadership of the suffragettes. Gordon Kerry’s legacy is already evident in ensuring the essence of 21st century Australia is chronicled through sound in his timbres and driving rhythms while drawing inspiration from ancient plainchant. \n\nMonday 25 March 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $45 ($35 Concession); Group 10+ $35; Student $35 \nThree-Concert Package $111 ($87 Concession)

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Musical Portraits
DESCRIPTION:‘To hear someone painted in sound is the most intimate portrait.’ Zoe Knighton\nShostakovich’s incredibly powerful String Quartet No.8 was officially dedicated ‘to the memory of the victims of fascism and war’ but there is much to suggest that Shostakovich meant it as a musical self-portrait. \nSmetana’s String Quartet No.1 ‘From My Life’ is a different type of musical portrait\, taking us on a vivid\, programmatic journey through young love\, and the devastation of tinnitus. In discussing these works\, Flinders Quartet became curious about how a composer would capture their essence and commissioned Tasmanian composer Maria Grenfell to paint them in sound. It will be illuminating for Flinders Quartet to perform their very own musical portrait for audiences and look into the musical mirror to see themselves in music. \n\nMonday 30 October 2023 1pm & 6pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $40 ($30 Concession); Group 10+ $30; Student $30

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet: Piano Heaven With Hoang Pham
DESCRIPTION:One of Melbourne’s favourite pianists\, Hoang Pham\, joins Flinders Quartet to open the concert with the sublime Schumann piano quintet. Complementing Schuman’s impassioned piece is Beethoven’s youthful String Quartet\, Op.18\, No.6. Beethoven is the penultimate when it comes to playing in a string quartet and the last of his Op.18 quartets is so incredibly inventive\, it has the artists forever on their toes. And to close the concert will be a new work by Tom Henry\, the winner of the 2013 Melbourne Recital Centre composition prize. Flinders Quartet and Tom Henry have had the privilege of knowing each other and sharing music since their residencies at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. Now\, with the sophisticated and intuitive Henry turning his hand to composition\, Flinders Quartet are proud to present his new work.\nSince 2000 Flinders Quartet has performed with some of the country’s greatest musicians\, toured nationally and internationally\, and commissioned numerous Australian works for string quartet. Fifteen years on\, Flinders Quartet is thrilled to be continuing its journey with a 2015 season that showcases their passion for playing the greatest music written for string quartet.
