SUMMARY:Firebird Trio: Folksongs and Fantastical Tales
DESCRIPTION:Words and music mingle in this final Firebird Trio concert for 2022. We perform the Spanish folk music of De Falla\, a Schubertian setting of a Swedish folk melody\, and two iconic movements from Gershwin’s folk opera Porgy and Bess. Our pianist Benjamin Martin contributes a playful trio version of Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and to finish the year\, Firebird Trio pays homage to its namesake with Stravinsky’s ballet music – the Infernal Dance of King Katschei who is bewitched by the magical Firebird. DESCRIPTION:A captivating musical snapshot of London spanning three centuries.\n\n\n\n\nFirebird Trio has performed nationwide to critical acclaim\, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes its name\, bringing energy\, colour and splendour to their live experiences. A city renowned for its artistic wealth\, London serves as inspiration for Firebird Trio in this captivating musical snapshot spanning three centuries. \nAbout the concert\nBeginning with Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio in A\, the piece reveals the energy and optimism of his time in London at the behest of Johann Salomon\, the German violinist and impresario. Haydn was able to establish himself securely in this prestigious artistic centre – a truly fruitful endeavour. \nHenry Purcell’s Fantasia in B flat was originally scored for four viols in 1680\, but their performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents a counterpoint\, lovingly encased in the modern sound world of the piano trio. \nFinishing on Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet of 1904. An early work from one of England’s most recognisable composers\, the quintet makes full use of the timbral possibilities of a double bass. DESCRIPTION:Program\nJohannes Brahms\nScherzo in C minor from the F-A-E Sonata \nClara Schumann\n3 Romances \nRobert Schumann\nAdagio and Allegro\nPiano Trio No.2 in F \nAbout the artists\nFirebird Trio has performed nationwide to critical acclaim\, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes its name\, bringing energy\, colour and splendour to their live experiences. This performance will see the trio celebrate the musical entanglement of the Schumanns with Johannes Brahms in a specially curated concert of duos and piano trios. \nAbout the concert\nOpening with the spirited Scherzo from the F-A-E Sonata\, based on a musical cryptogram of the motto ‘Frei aber einsam’ or ‘Free but lonely’\, the movement reveals a young composer already at the height of his craft. Moving into Clara Schumann’s Three Romances\, composed for the violin virtuoso\, Joseph Joachim with whom Clara had a wildly successful musical partnership. \nRobert Schumann’s self-styled characters of Florestan and Eusebius are brought to the fore in his Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano – swinging from introversion and tenderness one moment to passionate extroversion the next and finishing with the F major\, a work of idyllic generosity and collegiality.

Firebird welcomes to the program the brilliance of clarinetist Paul Dean\, and the virtuosity of Guest Violin\, Dr. Curt Thompson.
