SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Saint-Saëns' Organ Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Queensland Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici returns to lead the MSO in a program of orchestral favourites with an epic finale featuring the majestic grand organs of Melbourne Town Hall and Robert Blackwood Hall. \n\nDebussy’s famous Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) is a symphonic poem that some consider to be a turning point in music history\, as classical music entered the modern age.\nRavel’s Mother Goose is an idyllic evocation of childhood. Inspired by the fairy tale creators of the French Baroque\, the suite achieves its powerful emotional effect through the simple radiance of its poetic vision.\nSaint-Saëns’ thundering Organ Symphony is a stunning display of the visceral power of this colossal instrument. This symphony is probably best remembered in pop culture as the music to which Farmer Hoggett dances as he nurses his pig\, Babe\, back to health.\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nUmberto Clerici conductor\nCalvin Bowman organ \nDebussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune\nRavel Mother Goose Suite\nSaint-Saëns Symphony No.3 Organ \nDuration: approx. 1 hour and 40 minutes including interval \n\nThursday 10 August 2023 7:30pm at Melbourne Town Hall Sold out\nFriday 11 August 2023 7:30pm at Robert Blackwood Hall Selling fast\nTICKETS: Standard $35-$105; Concession $30-$100; Child (August 11 performance only) $20 \n\n

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - Brahms and Dvořák: Friends and Admirers
DESCRIPTION:Join the MSO and revered Spanish pianist under the baton of Jaime Martín for two works written by great composers inspired by their heroes. \n\n\n\n\nWritten in response to Robert Schumann’s attempted suicide (as he slowly fell in love at arm’s length with Schumann’s wife Clara while helping her to recover) Brahms’ deeply personal concerto takes inspiration from Bach and Beethoven before him\, and its premiere cemented Brahms’s reputation henceforth as the great ‘Third B’ in music history. \nDvořák’s Sixth Symphony is heavily inspired by the music of Brahms and Wagner\, along with his signature incorporation of elements from Bohemian folk music. Described as one of the most majestic in the symphonic literature\, its grand\, sweeping melodies take us on a journey ending in radiant\, sunny high spirits. \nPlease note: Paul Grabowsky’s new work will now be premiered on 18 November 2023 at Jaime Martín conducts Bruch and Dvořák. \n\n\n\nThursday 20 Jul 7:30 PM;  Saturday 22 Jul 2:00 PM     Running Time 2 hours (including interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$69 – $135

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: A Snapshot in Time: Elgar's Cello Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Travel back in time for this snapshot of Europe in 1918-1919\, when manifold compositional lineages collided with the life-changing events of the First World War. \n\n\n\n\nLili Boulanger was a child prodigy\, daughter of a Russian princess\, and the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome composition prize. Her evocative and richly textured works D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning) and D’un soir triste (Of a Sad Evening) were written in 1918\, just before her death at only 24 and speak to genuinely thrilling musical genius cut tragically short. \nGet your tissues at the ready and join internationally-acclaimed Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin for one of the most divine\, lyrical\, and emotionally-stirring works of the 20th century – Elgar’s beloved Cello Concerto. \nBased on a commedia dell’arte play\, this suite from Prokofiev’s vibrant comic opera Love for Three Oranges is absurd escapism at its most playful\, inspired by Prokofiev’s courtship with wartime America. \nFrench impressionist Ravel’s La Valse musically plots the birth\, rise\, and decline of the Viennese waltz. Journeying from joyful buoyancy to chaotic and crazed destruction\, La Valse has often been interpreted as an allegory of Europe before\, during\, and in the direct aftermath of WWI. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 1 Jun 7:30 PM; Saturday 3 Jun\, 7:30 PM   Running Time 2 hours\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: \nThursday 1 June: Standard $75.00 – $135.00; Concession $70.00 – $130.00* \n\n\nSaturday 3 June: Standard $69.00 – $126.00; Concession $64.00 – $121.00*

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Immortal Diamond - Paul Grabowsky and Lisa Gerrard
DESCRIPTION:A song that – in a sense – has no beginning and no end. \n\n\n\n\n“Immortal Diamond borrows its title from a poem of Gerard Manley Hopkins\, called That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire and the Comfort of Resurrection\, in which his unforgettable final lines describe his relationship to Christ: \nsince he was what I am\, and\nThis Jack\, joke\, poor potsherd\, patch\, matchwood\, immortal diamond\,\nIs immortal diamond \nThis beautiful poem\, full of extraordinary sound pictures\, provides the inspiration for a sound world in which Lisa Gerrard will range freely\, one that speaks of the power of spiritual love and renewal. The music will ebb and flow slowly like a tide\, the orchestra and sixteen wordless singers embedded within it will wrap around her voice\, occasionally falling away to the ruminations of the piano as it continues accompanying a song that – in a sense – has no beginning and no end.”\n– Paul Grabowsky AO \n\n\n\n\nWednesday 5 Oct\, 8:00 PM Arts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $55.00 – $95.00; Concession* $50.00 – $90.00\n\n\n*Concession prices apply to Pensioners\, Full-time students\, Health Care Cardholders and Children under the age of 18 \nDynamic pricing applies to this event. SUMMARY:MSO: Sonority and Silence - Tchaikovsky's Pathétique
DESCRIPTION:The MSO uncovers the spaces between sonority and silence in this program\, directed by Alpesh Chauhan\, Associate Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\nWith work performed all over the world\, British-born Thomas Adès is one of the most highly acclaimed living opera composers. This ballroom music from his 1995 opera Powder her Face features sleazy clarinets and characterful brass – high energy musical flirtation with a scandalous lilt\, reminiscent of the iconic dance scenes from Bernstein’s West Side Story. \nAustralian composer Anna Cawrse describes The Rest is Silence as “a prayer\, a celebration\, and a meditation on the quiet still spaces\, the silence amidst the hustle\, and the enduring power of music”. This concerto features MSO Principal Cor Anglais Michael Pisani in an exploration of this remarkable instrument\, often used to express music’s most melancholic\, bittersweet\, and emotionally profound moments. \nTchaikovsky wrote that his Sixth Symphony was “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose” – a big claim from the man who wrote Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. This remarkable symphony is infinitely relatable\, exploring a struggle between the strength of life force\, and emotional and physical demise. In a break from standard practice of the time\, this incredible cornerstone of romantic repertoire ends in quiet\, contemplative dissolution.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Harold in Italy
DESCRIPTION:The prose of Lord Byron provides the artistic inspiration behind this large-scale symphonic poem by Berlioz. \n\n\n\n\nMSO Principal Viola Christopher Moore assumes the instrumental role of Harold\, a character who wanders through a tableau of Berlioz’s creation. \nAfter the success of his startling Symphonie Fantastique\, Berlioz was approached by the virtuoso violinist Paganini. Having recently acquired a Stradivarius viola\, Paganini was looking for repertoire for the instrument. Harold in Italy was the result – a symphonic poem inspired by Lord Byron’s Childe Harold and Berlioz’s own travels in Italy. \n\n\n\n\nJoin the MSO at the next Quick Fix when Chief Conductor Jaime Martín leads the orchestra through a four-movement symphony with MSO Principal Viola\, Christopher Moore as soloist in Harold in Italy – a symphonic poem inspired by Lord Byron’s Childe Harold and Berlioz’s own travels in Italy. Enjoy a dose of classical music at the end of your day (not a bad mid-week date night either!). \nLow-priced tickets and a 6.30pm start time mean an hour with the MSO can fit in seamlessly to your evening. Relax\, unwind and join us in Hamer Hall.  \nPerformance details \nQuick Fix at Half Six: Harold in Italy \nThursday 18 August – 6.30pm; Hamer Hall\, Arts Centre Melbourne \nPrice range:  Standard $55.00 – $95.00; Concession* $50.00 – $90.00

SUMMARY:2016 Sidney Myer Free Concerts
DESCRIPTION:Summer Carnival \nSaturday 20 February \nJoshua Weilerstein conductor\nDale Barltrop violin \nDvořák Carnival\nBarber Violin Concerto\nTchaikovsky Symphony No.5 \nIn his second Sidney Myer Free Concert\, Joshua Weilerstein conducts more Dvořák and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. These flank the Violin Concerto by Samuel Barber\, with soloist\, MSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop. Barber’s lyrical and (dare we say?) romantic concerto is embedded in the modern repertoire\, but was not always thus. In 1940\, as Barber was struggling with the score\, renowned violin teacher Albert Meiff called it ‘far from the requirements of a modern violinist’ and that the score ‘required surgical operation by a specialist’\, offering to wield the scalpel himself. Fortunately\, Barber ignored this gratuitous offer.

He didn’t. A mere month later\, the Symphony was done and dusted. Even faster\, in composing time and brevity\, is John Adams’ brilliant Short Ride in a Fast Machine\, which the American composer said\, ‘You know how it is when someone asks you to ride in a terrific sports car\, and then you wish you hadn’t?’ American conductor Joshua Weilerstein\, making his MSO debut\, also directs another American classic\, George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F\, with Melbourne soloist Stefan Cassomenos.
