SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Rachmaninov's Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:Audience favourite Andrea Lam joins the MSO for Rachmaninov’s powerhouse Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, and Jaime Martín conducts Shostakovich’s tragic Tenth Symphony. \n\n\n\n\nPolish composer Grażyna Bacewicz wrote her Overture for Orchestra in 1943 in occupied Poland\, which she was to escape the following year. A short but powerful work\, rumbling lower strings and fanfare brass build momentum and tension\, giving this almost filmic work a frantic urgency as it hurtles towards its final climax. \nRachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a virtuosic tour-de-force of 24 variations\, ranging from somber to playful and lighthearted. The famous 18th variation has been used in movies as diverse as Somewhere in Time and Groundhog Day! \nThe interpretation of most of Shostakovich’s works is highly debated\, however his Tenth Symphony is widely viewed as a depiction of the years of Stalinist rule in Russia – years where millions of people died at the hands of the Soviet regime. This symphony\, written the year after Stalin’s death\, depicts the horror and oppression of these years for almost the entirety of its duration\, before ending\, finally\, in a sigh of relief and a breath of triumph. \n\nThursday 30 Nov 7:30 PM;  Saturday 2 Dec 7:30 PM  Running Time 2 hours\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $69 – $135

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Mozart's Final Symphonies
DESCRIPTION:Join MSO and Chief Conductor Jaime Martín for this deep dive into Mozart’s enigmatic and radical final symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nThere is a certain air of romantic mystery around the composition and first performances of Mozart’s final three symphonies\, all written together in the summer of 1788\, when the composer was 32. After enjoying several years of prominence and celebrity in Vienna\, Mozart’s career suddenly lost momentum when Vienna declared war on Turkey earlier that year\, and to complicate matters further\, he was in significant debt. These three symphonies were to be his last symphonic works before the early\, tragic death of classical music’s boy genius. \n\nThursday 23 Nov\, 7:30 PM;    Friday 24 Nov\, 7:30 PM Running Time 2 hours 15 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $69 – $135

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bartók and Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:A brilliant concert for newcomers and classical buffs alike\, Benjamin Northey conducts this program featuring an evocative depiction of the Australian landscape\, an energetic romp through the countryside with Beethoven\, and the extraordinary talent of pianist Berta Brozgul. Join us to commemorate Ben’s 20th consecutive year of conducting the MSO at this celebratory performance! \n\nPeter Sculthorpe’s Kakadu takes its name from the National Park in the Northern Territory. In the composer’s words\, the work “is concerned with my feelings about this place\, its landscape\, its change of seasons\, its dry season and its wet\, its cycle of life and death.”\nBerta Brozgul takes on the solo role for Bartók’s lyrical Third Piano Concerto. Composed at the end of his life as a gift for his wife\, Bartók infused the work with Hungarian folk rhythm and themes.\nBeethoven’s Sixth Symphony – known as the Pastoral Symphony – is one of the few works by the composer with a ‘programmatic’ element\, with the music representing depictions of nature such as bird calls and a thunderstorm. Ben Northey made his MSO debut conducting this work in 2003\, making it the perfect piece to celebrate his long relationship with the Orchestra.\n\n\nThursday 02 November 2023:  7:30pm at Melbourne Town Hall\nFree Organ Recital Arrive early to enjoy a recital performed by Calvin Bowman on the mighty Grand Organ\, free for ticket holders.   2 November at 6.30pm\nFriday 03 November 2023: 7:30pm at Robert Blackwood Hall Duration: approx. 2 hours including interval\n*Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances\, the originally scheduled soloist and program for these performances have changed. \nTICKETS: Standard $35-$105; Concession $30-$100; Child$20

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: French Delights
DESCRIPTION:Tair Khisambeev violin\nMatthew Tomkins violin\nFiona Sargeant viola\nElina Faskhi cello\nBen Hanlon double bass\nWendy Clarke flute\nDavid Thomas clarinet\nMelina van Leeuwen harp \nProgram\nRameau Pièces de clavecin en concerts: Concerto No.5\nDebussy (arr. Steele Johnson) Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune\nFrançaix Quintet for flute\, harp and string trio\nDebussy String Quartet\nRavel Introduction and Allegro \nAbout this performance\nExplore the evolution of intimate French chamber works from the baroque to the contemporary in this program curated by MSO Associate Principal Flute Wendy Clarke. \n\nBaroque composer Rameau wrote five ‘concerts’ – similar to the Italian ‘concerto’ for chamber ensemble – celebrating 18th century characters\, places\, and dances. Rameau’s Fifth Concerto is a delightfully charming step back in time to the world of French baroque.\nClaude Debussy’s sultry Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune depicts a faun – half man\, half horse – waking languorously from a warm afternoon nap to contemplate his sensual\, dream-bound encounter with nymphs. By contrast\, the colours and textures Debussy creates in his String Quartet have a shimmering\, iridescent quality\, even in moments of moody darkness.\nHeavily influenced by the music of Ravel\, Jean Françaix’s Quintet for flute\, harp and string trio fuses his impressionist roots with neoclassical and modern idioms in this intriguing work.\nRavel’s Introduction and Allegro – scored for harp\, flute\, clarinet and string quartet – shows off the flowing beauty of the harp as an instrument. Fascinatingly\, there are sections of this vibrant and characterful work that sound like a whole orchestra as Ravel experimented with different musical textures.\n\nSunday 29 October 2023 11:00am at Iwaki Auditorium\nDuration: approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes including interval \nTICKETS: Standard $59 (Concession $54); General Admission

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Eumeralla\, A War Requiem For Peace
DESCRIPTION:“One day I hope to walk on that country and feel no restless spirit – just the strength of two thousand generations of lives lived and culture sustained.” \n\n\n\n\nSouthwest of Melbourne lies a battleground\, haunted with the memory of war and loss. The scars of the Eumeralla Resistance War (1840 – 1863) lie heavily upon the country. \n“I first walked on this battlefield in 2013. The voices of those lost were so loud that it woke something in me and my immediate response was music. A song. A Requiem. A War Requiem\, named in honour of one of the most brutal resistance wars fought on this continent.” \nEumeralla\, a war Requiem for peace brings into focus a period of Australia’s history that is yet to be fully understood. Written and composed by acclaimed Yorta Yorta soprano\, composer and Artistic Director of Short Black Opera\, Deborah Cheetham AO\, this requiem for peace\, will be sung entirely in the ancient dialects of the Gunditjmara people. \n“It is my hope that this requiem will help the spirits of those who fell to find a lasting peace and that we\, their descendants\, might find our way to deeper understanding of the legacy of these battles.” \n“Eumeralla\, a war requiem for peace will break the silence of so many decades and serve to amplify the importance of our nation’s shared history.” – Deborah Cheetham AO \n\nSaturday 14 Oct 7:30 PM         Running Time1 hour 15 minutes\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $55 – $97

SUMMARY:MSO Mornings: Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring with American superstar violinist Esther Yoo under the baton of MSO Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang. \n\n\n\n\nThis program evokes the abundance of springtime\, featuring new beginnings and new life. \nSchumann wrote his Spring Symphony during the depths of a dark German winter as a pastoral homage to different aspects of the season. We hear its wondrous emergence out of snowy bleakness\, the special atmosphere of a springtime evening\, ‘merry playmates’\, and nature in full bloom at the height of its glory. \nAt the time of its composition\, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was considered an innovative reinvention of the genre in the way it foregrounded the solo violin. Esther Yoo makes her mark on this sparkling\, turbulent\, and floridly virtuosic work – described in 1906 by violinist Joseph Joachim as ‘the heart’s jewel’ of violin concertos. \n\nFriday 8 Sep 11:00 AM    Running Time 1 hour\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nTICKETS: $55 – $97

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Saint-Saëns' Organ Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Queensland Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici returns to lead the MSO in a program of orchestral favourites with an epic finale featuring the majestic grand organs of Melbourne Town Hall and Robert Blackwood Hall. \n\nDebussy’s famous Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) is a symphonic poem that some consider to be a turning point in music history\, as classical music entered the modern age.\nRavel’s Mother Goose is an idyllic evocation of childhood. Inspired by the fairy tale creators of the French Baroque\, the suite achieves its powerful emotional effect through the simple radiance of its poetic vision.\nSaint-Saëns’ thundering Organ Symphony is a stunning display of the visceral power of this colossal instrument. This symphony is probably best remembered in pop culture as the music to which Farmer Hoggett dances as he nurses his pig\, Babe\, back to health.\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nUmberto Clerici conductor; Calvin Bowman organ \nDebussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune\nRavel Mother Goose Suite\nSaint-Saëns Symphony No.3 Organ \nDuration: approx. 1 hour and 40 minutes including interval \n\nThursday 10 August 2023 7:30pm at Melbourne Town Hall Sold out\nFriday 11 August 2023 7:30pm at Robert Blackwood Hall Selling fast\nTICKETS: Standard $35-$105; Concession $30-$100; Child (August 11 performance only) $20
