SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Stravinsky & Chindamo
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to use your imagination in weird and wonderful ways. \n\n\n\n\nWhen French composer Maurice Ravel wrote his ethereal Pavane pour une infante défunte\, he’d been dreaming of the long-lost melodies that may once have inspired a young Spanish princess to dance. Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring shares a French connection as it premiered shortly after in a Parisian theatre\, but the story of this ballet music is much darker. It culminates with the raw and frenetic rhythms of a sacrificial dance\, sounding wild enough to send audiences into an uproar at the first performance. \nThe musical tales on this program are centred around Are there any questions? – an Australian composition from MSO 2026 Composer in Residence\, Joe Chindamo. It takes its name from the final line of Margaret Atwood’s chilling dystopic novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Hear Chindamo’s piece for the first time on this narrative-fuelled program. It’s music to leave you thinking deeply about the world you live in – and the worlds that live inside you. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 19 March 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 21 March 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time 1 hour 45 minutes (including 20 minute interval) \nArts Centre melbourne\, hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard from $75.00; Concession* from $70.00; Child** from $20.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Also sprach Zarathustra
DESCRIPTION:Experience a program where historical breakthroughs meet raw\, physical sound. \n\n\n\n\nThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra invites you to the Australian premiere of The Deciding Machine by Melody Eötvös. Composed in 2020\, this work marks a dual tribute to the centenary of women’s suffrage and the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The title honours Ada Lovelace\, the 19th-century visionary who wrote the world’s first computer algorithm. \nTo complement this tribute to innovation\, we are pairing the work with Beethoven’s only Violin Concerto\, featuring the brilliant Spanish violinist María Dueñas. While her recording with Deutsche Grammophon is stunning\, nothing compares to the electricity of hearing her play it live. \nThe evening reaches its peak with a work designed to be felt as much as heard. If you’ve ever been awestruck by the bold horn calls and thunderous timpani of 2001: A Space Odyssey\, this is your chance to experiencing the feeling of that music resonating through your entire body. \nUnder the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martín\, Strauss’ heroic Also sprach Zarathustra will be brought to life in all its visceral glory. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 12 Mar 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 14 Mar 2:00 PM\n\n\n Running Time 1 hour 50 minutes\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard from $75.00; Concession* from $70.00; Child**from $20.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Strauss and Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Live music can enrich us with new emotional experiences. It can also provide a great night out.\nIn both of these spirits\, the MSO presents a mood-lifting concert program. Richard Strauss brings the laughs with Le bourgeois gentilhomme\, a musical comedy about a normal bloke who dreams of joining the upper classes. It’s a bit like My Fair Lady but more satirical. As the character attempts to climb a dazzling social ladder\, Strauss provides a score that recalls music from the Baroque era in which the original story was written. \nThis echoes another piece on the program\, J.S. Bach’s Suite in D. Be sure to listen out for Air in G\, its most famous movement and one that’s bound to tug at your heartstrings. Not only will Jaime Martín lead this concert from the podium\, but he’ll also swap baton for flute when he performs Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G. Be there to see MSO Chief Conductor in a different light as soloist! \nVersatile Concertmaster Natalie Chee will also take a showstopping role in this concert that relies heavily on the expressive foundations of the violin. \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nJaime Martín director / flute\nNatalie Chee violin\n \nJ.S. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra 2026 Sidney Myer Free Concerts: Melbourne Youth Orchestra -Fire & Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:Press play and immerse yourself in a world where orchestral power meets digital fantasy. In his Australian debut\, GRAMMY Award-winner Christian Reif leads Australia’s brightest young musicians into new musical territories as they conjure cinematic soundscapes and epic adventures through works by Anna Clyne\, Nobuo Uematsu\, Daniel Nelson\, and Stravinsky. \nFrom the sweeping drama of The Firebird Suite to the pixelated magic of Final Fantasy IX\, this concert blurs the boundaries between classical tradition and gaming imagination\, blending the fantasy of late Romanticism with the restless and expansive soundscapes of digital worlds. \nThe program opens with a burst of mechanical energy and playful chaos – Daniel Nelson’s Steampunk Blizzard. With its driving rhythms and quirky orchestration\, it conjures a snowstorm in a fantastical\, gear-driven world – a perfect nod to the imaginative landscapes of gaming and speculative fiction. \nThen comes Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour\, a brooding and cinematic work inspired by poetry and film. Its swirling textures and dramatic surges evoke a sense of mystery and nocturnal adventure. \nFrom there\, we enter the world of gaming with Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy IX Suite\, a symphonic arrangement of themes from the iconic video game. Uematsu’s music is beloved for its emotional depth and sweeping grandeur\, and this suite captures the heart of the game’s fantasy universe – where heroism\, nostalgia\, and magic collide. \nThe concert concludes with Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1945)\, a dazzling reworking of his ballet score based on Russian folklore. This version balances brilliance with clarity\, offering a triumphant finale that bridges myth and modernity. \nChristian Reif brings his dynamic artistry and global experience to this genre-blending program\, guiding the orchestra through a thrilling journey of sound and imagination. \nDon’t miss this thrilling celebration of youthful artistry\, steampunk storms and midnight adventures. Game on – this is symphonic fantasy at its finest. \nFeaturing: Australian Youth Orchestra; Christian Reif conductor\nProgram\nDaniel Nelson Steampunk Blizzard\nAnna Clyne This Midnight Hour\nUematsu (arr. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra 2026 Sidney Myer Free Concerts: Symphonic Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has been your orchestra for 120 years and counting. We’re celebrating this monumental occasion at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Bring your friends\, parents\, or first date – we’re pulling out the fan favourites to give you the best evening we can. \nIt’ll kick off with a brand-new fanfare from Melbourne’s Andrew Aronowicz\, our Cybec Young Composer in Residence. He’s a familiar face to many MSO concertgoers\, but if you’re new to his work\, this could be the start of a beautiful musical relationship. \nHolly Harrison features next on the program – could she be your new favourite artist? The Australian composer wrote Hellbent for the MSO\, and it was first performed by our Principal Trumpet Owen Morris who now returns for its brassy\, bluesy solo. \nWe’ll then venture deeper into our history with Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1\, performed at one of our very first concerts ever. It’s based on a Norwegian folk tale about a peasant who travels the world seeking fame and fortune\, then finds his way back home to everlasting love. \nAustralian conductor Leonard Weiss will wrap up the concert with Beethoven’s gripping Symphony No.5. Hear that famous theme of fate knocking at the door\, dun-dun-dun-daa. Let the next 120 years enter! \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nLeonard Weiss conductor\nOwen Morris trumpet \nProgram: Andrew Aronowicz^ Fanfare*\nHolly Harrison Hellbent\nGrieg Peer Gynt: Suite No.1\nBeethoven Symphony No.5 \n^Cybec Young Composer in Residence\n*World Premiere of an MSO Commission \nTuesday 10 February 2026\, 7.30\nDuration Approx. 1 hour & 50 minutes including a 20-minute interval \nSidney Myer Music Bowl \nTICKETS: Free entry – no bookings required \nGates open at 5pm with entry on a first-in basis \n\nThis performance will be live-streamed on YouTube

With more than 90 voices in harmony\, this one night only collaboration will light up the Bowl with a performance as vast as the ocean and as intimate as a family gathering. \nA Communal Celebration: On the lawn\, the music isn’t just performed; it’s shared. Spread out your picnic blanket and join “8\,000 of your closest friends” in a space where community and culture come alive. It’s the perfect setting for Mana Moana—a community driven project celebrating the people of our Pacific region. \nThe Ultimate Melbourne Backdrop: As the Signature Choir’s 90 voices rise in harmony alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, watch the city skyline begin to glisten behind the stage. There is a specific magic to hearing gospel\, classical\, and traditional Pasifika sounds while the sun sets over Kings Domain and the stars begin to emerge. \nSpace to Move and Breathe: The lawn offers the freedom to find your own perfect vantage point. Whether you’re leaning back to take in the sheer scale of the Bowl’s iconic canopy or standing to feel the energy of the Pasifika medley\, the open air allows the music to resonate in a way no venue can match. Bring a picnic blanket or low chair and make yourself comfortable to experience the power of this world-first Pacific choral and orchestra production. And\, if the mood strikes\, get up and dance along on the grass! \nThe Sounds of the Pacific\, Amplified: Sidney Myer Music Bowl was designed so that sound travels effortlessly up the hill. Even from the back of the grass\, you’ll feel every note of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the emotional weight of ancestral stories told through song. \nMore about Mana Moana: This is a world-first Pacific\, choral and orchestral production that explores the ocean as a symbol of connection\, heritage and strength. Since its 2023 debut with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra\, Mana Moana has sold out arenas\, earned standing ovations\, and become a powerful celebration of identity\, resilience and unity. The evening will be hosted by the renowned actor and comedian Tofiga Fepulea’i. \nPack a picnic blanket\, bring your loved ones\, and settle in for a night of “sacred spirit” (Mana) and “oceanic beauty” (Moana). This is a special summer memory in the making. \n\n\n\nSaturday 31 January \n\nGates 5:00 PM; Performance 7:00 PM\n\nSidney Myer Music Bowl\n\nTICKETS: Standard from $59.90;  Concession* from $49.00; Child from $49.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*Concessions include Pensioners\, Health Care Card holders\, full-time students and children aged 17 and under. \nAll sales through our ticketing partner Ticketek.
