DESCRIPTION:The Cybec Foundation supports the MSO to organise and run the Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers’ Program each year. \nThe program selects four participants to be mentored by leading Australian composers and compose a 10-minute piece. The four pieces are performed by the MSO in a showcase\, following which\, one of the four participants is chosen as the MSO’s Young Composer in Residence and commissioned to write further pieces. \nSince 2003 when the program was introduced\, more than 80 composers from across Australia have had works commissioned and performed by the MSO. DESCRIPTION:Audience favourite Andrea Lam joins the MSO for Rachmaninov’s powerhouse Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, and Jaime Martín conducts Shostakovich’s tragic Tenth Symphony. \n\n\n\n\nPolish composer Grażyna Bacewicz wrote her Overture for Orchestra in 1943 in occupied Poland\, which she was to escape the following year. A short but powerful work\, rumbling lower strings and fanfare brass build momentum and tension\, giving this almost filmic work a frantic urgency as it hurtles towards its final climax. \nRachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a virtuosic tour-de-force of 24 variations\, ranging from somber to playful and lighthearted. The famous 18th variation has been used in movies as diverse as Somewhere in Time and Groundhog Day! \nThe interpretation of most of Shostakovich’s works is highly debated\, however his Tenth Symphony is widely viewed as a depiction of the years of Stalinist rule in Russia – years where millions of people died at the hands of the Soviet regime. In the composer’s words\, the work “is concerned with my feelings about this place\, its landscape\, its change of seasons\, its dry season and its wet\, its cycle of life and death.”\nBerta Brozgul takes on the solo role for Bartók’s lyrical Third Piano Concerto. Composed at the end of his life as a gift for his wife\, Bartók infused the work with Hungarian folk rhythm and themes.\nBeethoven’s Sixth Symphony – known as the Pastoral Symphony – is one of the few works by the composer with a ‘programmatic’ element\, with the music representing depictions of nature such as bird calls and a thunderstorm. Steele Johnson) Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune\nFrançaix Quintet for flute\, harp and string trio\nDebussy String Quartet\nRavel Introduction and Allegro \nAbout this performance\nExplore the evolution of intimate French chamber works from the baroque to the contemporary in this program curated by MSO Associate Principal Flute Wendy Clarke. \n\nBaroque composer Rameau wrote five ‘concerts’ – similar to the Italian ‘concerto’ for chamber ensemble – celebrating 18th century characters\, places\, and dances. Rameau’s Fifth Concerto is a delightfully charming step back in time to the world of French baroque.\nClaude Debussy’s sultry Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune depicts a faun ­­– half man\, half horse – waking languorously from a warm afternoon nap to contemplate his sensual\, dream-bound encounter with nymphs. By contrast\, the colours and textures Debussy creates in his String Quartet have a shimmering\, iridescent quality\, even in moments of moody darkness.\nHeavily influenced by the music of Ravel\, Jean Françaix’s Quintet for flute\, harp and string trio fuses his impressionist roots with neoclassical and modern idioms in this intriguing work.\nRavel’s Introduction and Allegro – scored for harp\, flute\, clarinet and string quartet – shows off the flowing beauty of the harp as an instrument. DESCRIPTION:“One day I hope to walk on that country and feel no restless spirit – just the strength of two thousand generations of lives lived and culture sustained.” \n\n\n\n\nSouthwest of Melbourne lies a battleground\, haunted with the memory of war and loss. The scars of the Eumeralla Resistance War (1840 – 1863) lie heavily upon the country. \n“I first walked on this battlefield in 2013. The voices of those lost were so loud that it woke something in me and my immediate response was music. A song. A Requiem. A War Requiem\, named in honour of one of the most brutal resistance wars fought on this continent.” \nEumeralla\, a war Requiem for peace brings into focus a period of Australia’s history that is yet to be fully understood. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring with American superstar violinist Esther Yoo under the baton of MSO Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang. \n\n\n\n\nThis program evokes the abundance of springtime\, featuring new beginnings and new life. \nSchumann wrote his Spring Symphony during the depths of a dark German winter as a pastoral homage to different aspects of the season. We hear its wondrous emergence out of snowy bleakness\, the special atmosphere of a springtime evening\, ‘merry playmates’\, and nature in full bloom at the height of its glory. \nAt the time of its composition\, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was considered an innovative reinvention of the genre in the way it foregrounded the solo violin.
