SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Debussy and Strauss
DESCRIPTION:From Greek tragedies to Marvel movies\, the Hero protagonist is an enduring feature of storytelling.  \n\n\n\n\nJoin the MSO under the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martin for this fast-paced\, action-packed homage to the heroic. \nTurn-of-the-century English composer Ethel Smyth was a heroic rebel of the highest order. A bisexual leader of the suffragette movement\, she served a stint in prison\, and challenged the prejudices of the musical establishment\, all with a flourish of anti-authoritarian flair. Her intensely powerful and socially-damning 1906 opera The Wreckers follows a hypocritical community of Cornish plunderers who lure ships amidst raging storms onto rocks to loot their cargo. \nInspired by Beethoven’s Eroica (heroic) Symphony\, Strauss wrote his tone poem\, Ein Heldenleben\, to depict the various key ingredients in the life of a hero\, including Adversaries\, Companions\, Battles\, and Works of Peace. Strauss strenuously denied allegations that he had based the work on himself\, but later admitted that he felt he was ‘no less interesting than Napoleon’\, and indeed\, the work quotes many of Strauss’ earlier works. Regardless – Ein Heldenleben\, with triumphant brass and swelling romantic lyricism – is a flattering picture of any heroic subject. \nDebussy’s divine masterpiece\, La Mer\, is a rich and evocative portrayal of the sea and its many moods. A master of musical colour\, Debussy captures his lifelong love of the sea – a romance that had once almost led him to become a sailor. In this shimmering work\, he reveals his attachment to “my old friend\, the sea; it is always endless and beautiful.” Completed in Eastbourne on the English Channel coast\, Debussy also drew on visual inspiration from an earlier generation of painters\, including Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa\, which was a source of key inspiration for Debussy\, and became the cover of the score. \n\nThursday 9 May\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 11 May\, 2:00 PM   Running Time1 hour 50 minutes (including interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $20 – $139

DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Enigma Variations \nThe MSO dedicates these performances to Sir Andrew Davis\, who passed away on 20 April. \nSir Andrew was the MSO Chief Conductor (2013-2019) and Conductor Laureate (2020-2024). \nWe miss him terribly. \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nJaime Martín conductor\nTair Khisambeev violin \nBritten The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra\nVaughan Williams The Lark Ascending\nElgar Enigma Variations \nJaime Martín conducts this stunning program of perennial English charmers – some of the most popular orchestral music ever written. \n\nFirst\, you’ll tour through the instruments of the orchestra with Benjamin Britten’s delightful A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.\nThen\, you’ll hear a work by Ralph Vaughan Williams\, a figurehead of England’s Folk Music Revival\, who would spend his time rambling through the countryside to ‘collect’ folk tunes from villagers. One of the best-loved works in classical music\, The Lark Ascending draws on such tunes\, creating a glorious pastoral picture of a bird in flight on a clear\, bright day.\nAfter a long day of apparently-torturous teaching\, Elgar sat down at the piano to clear his mind\, and began to tinker. The final work on this program is the tune he called Enigma – to express the ‘nothingness’ from which it came. Each of the fourteen variations on this never-revealed theme paints musical portrait of one of Elgar’s friends. The most famous – Nimrod – is one of the most emotionally profound and magnificent works of all time.\n\nThursday 02 May 2024\, 7:30pm at Robert Blackwood Hall\nFriday 03 May 2024\, 7:30pm at Melbourne Town Hall Selling fast\nSaturday 04 May 2024\, 7:30pm at Frankston Arts Centre Selling fast\nDuration: approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes including interval \nTICKETS: $45-$110 ($40-$105 Concession) ; Child (under 18 years) $20

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bernstein\, Gershwin and Chindamo
DESCRIPTION:Get your gang together and pop on your dance shoes for this concert featuring a unique work for trombone and orchestra composed by Joe Chindamo alongside enduring American favourites. \n\n\n\n\nYou’ll be tapping your toes all the way home. \nJonathon Ramsay – currently Principal Trombone at the Berlin Philharmonic – brings to life Joe Chindamo’s Ligeia. Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe\, Chindamo explores psychological duality in this wildly virtuosic meditation on the macabre. \nBased on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and adapted by Stephen Sondheim\, Bernstein’s score to West Side Story is hailed as one of the most brilliant achievements in musical theatre history. His suite of Symphonic Dances is an orchestral romp through some of the most dynamic and moving themes\, including ‘Somewhere’ and ‘Maria’. \nYou might be familiar with the movie-musical An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron\, or perhaps you saw the production that recently swept the Tonys on Broadway. It was this orchestral work by Gershwin – written more than 20 years before the musical – that inspired Hollywood producers and prompted the development of a blockbuster. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 15 Apr 6:30 PM;   Running Time1 hour (no interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $62 – $102

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Baroque Festival - St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:Wrapping up MSO’s Baroque Festival is this special 300th Anniversary performance of Bach’s oratorio of biblical proportions – St John Passion. \n\n\n\n\nLauded for his ability to amplify a work’s immediacy and drama\, Stephen Layton – former Music Director at Trinity College Cambridge and founder of world-leading London consort Polyphony – conducts the orchestra for this historic concert\, alongside the mighty MSO chorus and an all-star cast of soloists. \nFirst performed on Good Friday 1724 in Leipzig’s cavernous St Nicholas Church\, Bach’s intensely dramatic St John Passion narrates the Easter Passion of Christ\, according to the gospel of John. \nCompared to his later St Matthew Passion\, the St John has a raw\, uninhibited sense of tragic momentum. With spitting\, bloodthirsty mobs and heartbreaking arias\, this spectacular work hurtles towards the inevitable: a showcase not only of Bach’s incredible technicality\, but of the immense power of musical storytelling. \n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\n\n\n\nStephen Layton\, conductor; Ruairi Bowen\, Evangelist\, tenor; Christopher Richardson\, Christus\, bass;\nDavid Greco. Pilatus\, bass; Sara Macliver\, soprano; Ashlyn Tymms\, alto\n\n\nMSO Chorus’ Warren Trevelyan-Jones\, chorus director\n\n\n\nSaturday 6 April 7:30 PM  Running Time 2 hours 40 minutes (including interval)\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\nTICKETS: $70.00 – $125.00

DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\nErin Helyard* director / harpsichord\nTair Khisambeev violin \n*MSO Artist in Residence \nVivaldi Concerto for Violin in F\, RV 569\nBach Brandenburg Concerto No.3\nVivaldi Concerto for Violin in G minor\, RV 577\nBach Brandenburg Concerto No.1\nTelemann Overture (Suite) in D Major\, TWV 55:D22 \nAbout this performance\nAustralia’s own baroque star Erin Helyard kicks off MSO’s Festival from the harpsichord\, showcasing the incredible variation of three of the era’s most famous contemporaries. \n\nA violinist by training\, Antonio Vivaldi wrote over 500 concertos – works for solo instrument and chamber orchestra. Nearly half of these were written for his beloved violin\, and his intimate knowledge of the instrument and its capabilities allowed him to push the boundaries of virtuosic possibility. Featuring the MSO’s Tair Khisambeev on violin\, these concertos in F and G give us a moody\, thrilling snapshot of a composer at the height of musical innovation.\nOften lauded as the greatest composer of all time\, Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos were written for a potential patron\, whom Bach hoped would give him a job. Taking inspiration from the concertos of Vivaldi\, this set highlights the facility of several instruments\, instead of just one. Like a conversation with many voices\, Bach’s compositional genius foregrounds independent melodies for each instrument with spectacular clarity.\nTelemann’s Overture Suite was dedicated to a hunting enthusiast\, and it’s easy to hear why. This selection of musical scenes feels like a day in the countryside with no shortage of thrills\, spills\, and unexpected encounters.\n\n\nTuesday 02 April 2024 7:30pm at Hamer Hall Duration: approx. 75 minutes\, no interval\nTICKETS: $54 – $99

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Mahler 3
DESCRIPTION:Fasten your musical seatbelts for one of the most thrilling symphonic rides in the repertoire: Mahler’s truly epic Third Symphony. \n\n\n\n\nUnder the baton of Chief Conductor Jaime Martín\, the forces of the MSO are bolstered by Young Voices of Melbourne\, the MSO Chorus\, and electrifying American mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis. \nAt the time Mahler composed this work in 1902\, a “symphony” typically had a standard structure comprised of four movements. In approaching his Third Symphony however\, Mahler sought first and foremost to create a “world”\, and to allow the shape of this “world” to dictate the work’s final form. \nIt begins with a Dionysian funeral march as Summer arrives and the Greek god Pan awakes\, before the flowers\, animals\, humanity\, angels\, and love bestow their wisdom upon the listener in the second half. This ancient world in two parts\, comprised of five movements\, embodied a radical modernity that challenged the very identity of the symphony. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 14 Mar\, 7:30 PM; Saturday 16 Mar\, 7:30 PM\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (no interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $86.00 – $139.00; Concession $81.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – Marvellous Mozart
DESCRIPTION:ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance.\nGiven his reputation as a larger-than-life trickster\, it’s little surprise that Mozart’s capacity for crafting characters from sound is unparalleled. ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance. \nMozart’s Concert-Rondo provides a charming opener to set the stage for the two works to come. Mozart originally composed this set of variations for Piano and Orchestra as an alternate finale for his Piano Concerto No.5. \nBoth Piano Concertos No.23 and No.24 were composed in 1786 while Mozart was immersed in writing his operatic comedy The Marriage of Figaro\, and both are infused with a sense of drama. The 23rd evokes thematic material from Figaro\, tempering its bustling\, playful energy with almost unbearable longing. \nPiano Concerto No.24 takes us to another realm entirely. Out of a dark\, mystical opening emerges a tender and vulnerable piano solo – our characters are set – and a raging battle between ruthless power and quiet honesty ensues. While written years before his opera The Magic Flute\, the counterpoint of unbridled fury and grounded simplicity in this concerto feels like a premonition of his famous Queen of the Night aria. \nPre-Concert Talk\nPlease join Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 6.45pm – 7.05pm. \n\nThursday 7 March 2024 7.30pm;  MRC\,  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $107 ($102 Concession); A reserve $93 ($88 Concession); B reserve $77 ($72 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($57 Concession)
