A bisexual leader of the suffragette movement\, she served a stint in prison\, and challenged the prejudices of the musical establishment\, all with a flourish of anti-authoritarian flair. Her intensely powerful and socially-damning 1906 opera The Wreckers follows a hypocritical community of Cornish plunderers who lure ships amidst raging storms onto rocks to loot their cargo. \nInspired by Beethoven’s Eroica (heroic) Symphony\, Strauss wrote his tone poem\, Ein Heldenleben\, to depict the various key ingredients in the life of a hero\, including Adversaries\, Companions\, Battles\, and Works of Peace. Strauss strenuously denied allegations that he had based the work on himself\, but later admitted that he felt he was ‘no less interesting than Napoleon’\, and indeed\, the work quotes many of Strauss’ earlier works. Regardless – Ein Heldenleben\, with triumphant brass and swelling romantic lyricism – is a flattering picture of any heroic subject. \nDebussy’s divine masterpiece\, La Mer\, is a rich and evocative portrayal of the sea and its many moods. A master of musical colour\, Debussy captures his lifelong love of the sea – a romance that had once almost led him to become a sailor. Her intensely powerful and socially-damning 1906 opera The Wreckers follows a hypocritical community of Cornish plunderers who lure ships amidst raging storms onto rocks to loot their cargo.\nDebussy’s divine masterpiece\, La Mer\, is a rich and evocative portrayal of the sea and its many moods. A master of musical colour\, Debussy captures his lifelong love of the sea – a romance that had once almost led him to become a sailor. Strauss strenuously denied allegations that he had based the work on himself\, but later admitted that he felt he was ‘no less interesting than Napoleon’\, and indeed\, the work quotes many of Strauss’ earlier works. Nearly half of these were written for his beloved violin\, and his intimate knowledge of the instrument and its capabilities allowed him to push the boundaries of virtuosic possibility. Featuring the MSO’s Tair Khisambeev on violin\, these concertos in F and G give us a moody\, thrilling snapshot of a composer at the height of musical innovation.\nOften lauded as the greatest composer of all time\, Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos were written for a potential patron\, whom Bach hoped would give him a job. Taking inspiration from the concertos of Vivaldi\, this set highlights the facility of several instruments\, instead of just one. Like a conversation with many voices\, Bach’s compositional genius foregrounds independent melodies for each instrument with spectacular clarity.\nTelemann’s Overture Suite was dedicated to a hunting enthusiast\, and it’s easy to hear why. DESCRIPTION:ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance.\nGiven his reputation as a larger-than-life trickster\, it’s little surprise that Mozart’s capacity for crafting characters from sound is unparalleled. ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance. \nMozart’s Concert-Rondo provides a charming opener to set the stage for the two works to come. Mozart originally composed this set of variations for Piano and Orchestra as an alternate finale for his Piano Concerto No.5. \nBoth Piano Concertos No.23 and No.24 were composed in 1786 while Mozart was immersed in writing his operatic comedy The Marriage of Figaro\, and both are infused with a sense of drama. The 23rd evokes thematic material from Figaro\, tempering its bustling\, playful energy with almost unbearable longing. \nPiano Concerto No.24 takes us to another realm entirely. Out of a dark\, mystical opening emerges a tender and vulnerable piano solo – our characters are set – and a raging battle between ruthless power and quiet honesty ensues.
