SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven Festival: Symphonies 1 & 3
DESCRIPTION:The MSO’s Beethoven Festival kicks off at Hamer Hall with the First and Third symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nConsider this concert the musical Sparknotes version of how Beethoven constructed a symphonic footbridge between the Classical and Romantic eras. \nIn his First symphony\, Beethoven dips his toes in the symphonic waters by honouring the music of Haydn with oodles of classical charm and wit. Intentionally off-putting\, it starts in the “wrong key” before settling into C major\, and a Haydn-esque joke opens the finale – the setup is hesitant and gloomy before the musical punchline transforms it into a light\, sparkling thrill. \nThe heroic Eroica symphony saw Beethoven break away from the overt influence of Mozart and Haydn to develop his own original voice. It was this\, his rousing Third Symphony\, that ignited the musical revolution that would become the Romantic era. \n\n\n\n\nTuesday 19 November 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 40 mins (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $125.00; Concession $70.00 – $120.00\n\n\nConcession  $59.50 – $102.00\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Debussy\, Wagner and Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a heartbreakingly beautiful program as conductor Fabien Gabel leads the MSO through the thrilling illicit encounters and devastating separation of forbidden love. \n\n\n\n\nAdapted from Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play of the same name\, Debussy’s 1898 suite of music from his the opera Pelléas and Mélisande tells the tale of doomed lovers through swirling\, impressionistic musical language. \nIf a single work had to be named to have shaped the course of history\, it may well be Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. Tristan demonstrated the profound capacity of music to create drama and reveal the inner emotions of characters on a level that was\, at that time\, unimaginable. The opera’s bookends – Prelude and Liebestod (Love-Death) – ache with the passion and catastrophe of these lovers’ fates. \nRichard Strauss’ lush\, colourful Fantasy draws upon musical highlights from his 1919 operatic romance\, Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow). \n\n\n\n\nMonday 14 October 6:30 PM     Running Time1 hour (no interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nTICKETS: Standard $59.00 – $99.00; Concession $54.00 – $94.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Forbidden Love
DESCRIPTION:From Debussy’s and Wagner’s doomed lovers to Richard Strauss’ colourful Fantasy\, this program explores the passion and catastrophe of forbidden love\, conducted by Fabien Gabel. \n\n\n\n\nAlexandra Dariescu joins the MSO as soloist in Clara Schumann’s long overlooked Piano Concerto. \nAdapted from Maurice Maeterlinck’s symbolist play of the same name\, Debussy’s 1898 suite of music from his the opera Pelléas and Mélisande tells the tale of doomed lovers through swirling\, impressionistic musical language. \nDespite being forbidden by her father to marry Robert Schumann\, Clara did just that\, the day before her 21st birthday. A renowned concert pianist and talented composer\, Clara had premiered her own Piano Concerto\, filled with ravishing\, memorable themes\, at the age of just sixteen. While she continued to perform across Europe to great acclaim after marrying Robert\, her own compositional works were largely overlooked by the male-dominated world of classical music. In recent years\, her brilliance as a composer has been recognised\, in no small part due to this compelling concerto. \nIf a single work had to be named to have shaped the course of history\, it may well be Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Legendary English cellist Steven Isserlis returns to Melbourne for this exhilarating program conducted by Benjamin Northey\, anchored by Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto and Prokoviev’s shimmering final symphony. \n\n\n\n\nComposer Yasushi Akutagawa was so enamoured with Russian music that he entered the Soviet Union illegally in 1954\, where he established friendships with Shostakovich\, Khachaturian and Kabalevsky\, among others. This fantastic Triptyque (1953) for string orchestra fuses the punchiness of the Russian musical tradition with the folk sounds of his native Japan. \nShostakovich’s First Cello Concerto was written in 1959 for his friend\, the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The latter was so taken with it\, that he learned it by heart in just four days. \nEmerging Australian composer Naomi Dodd is known for her emotional\, passion-filled works that spring from everyday experiences. Witness the premiere of a new work commissioned as part of the Cybec Young Composers’ Program. \nCompleted the year before his death in 1953\, Prokofiev’s seventh and final symphony showcases his mastery of the orchestra\, its apparent simplicity masking deep musical and emotional complexity. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 3 Oc 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 5 Oct 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 45 minutes \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $139.00; Concession $70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Dvořák and Bruckner
DESCRIPTION:The MSO welcomes extraordinary violinist Karen Gomyo and German-based Australian conductor Daniel Carter for this glorious program of Czech and German gems to satiate your musical soul. \n\n\n\n\nSmetana’s exuberant overture to his 1866 comic opera The Bartered Bride weaves dance-like Czech folk tunes with rollicking strings and characterful woodwinds\, hurtling toward a triumphant finale. \nDvořák wrote his Violin Concerto for the superstar virtuoso Joseph Joachim\, who expressed his disapproval over elements of the composition\, and then ultimately refused to perform it. But Joachim’s loss is Gomyo’s gain – the work’s lush\, romantic Adagio\, and its animated\, folk-inspired dance forms have cemented its popularity with violinists and audiences alike. \nIn contrast to the fast-paced works above\, Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony takes its time\, in no rush to show its full character too soon. Instead\, this broad work starts with solo horn against a backdrop of simmering strings\, building throughout until the demure opening theme metamorphoses into a bursting\, glorious finale. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 5 September 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 7 September 7:30 PM\n\n\nRunning Time 2 hours 15 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $139.00; Concession $70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Fauré's Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Experience the otherworldly in this sublime program conducted by Lawrence Renes\, culminating in Fauré’s divine Requiem\, featuring the MSO Chorus and much-loved soloists Siobhan Stagg and Roderick Williams. \n\n\n\n\nInspired by the mental image of entering a mythical cave\, Elena Kats-Chernin’s moody\, hymn-like work transports its audience to a mesmerising and fantastical domain. \nThe ability of Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony to lure its listener to another dimension is remarkable. The structure of tempo changes in this seamless patchwork of a piece means that time behaves almost as an illusion. The music’s imperceptible shifting of gears results in an immersive\, wonderfully-disorienting experience. \nA Requiem – a mass for the dead – might seem a strange choice for a composer who was described by his son as ‘a sceptic’. This perspective proved an asset for Fauré\, who brings a vastly different message to his Requiem than his predecessors. Instead of a haunting\, sombre work\, Fauré’s is a profound meditation on the restful warmth waiting in paradise \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 29 August\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 31 August\, 2:00 PM\nRunning Time1 hour 40 minutes (including interval)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75.00 – $139.00; Concession $70.00 – $134.00

SUMMARY:MSO Chamber: Brahms' Third Piano Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Featuring\nGabrielle Halloran curator / viola\nKathryn Taylor violin\nMiranda Brockman cello\nMichael Pisani oboe\nBrock Imison bassoon\nKenji Fujimura keyboard \nBritten Phantasy for Oboe and String Trio\nPoulenc Trio for Oboe\, Bassoon and Piano\nBrahms Piano Quartet No.3 Werther \nMSO violist Gabrielle Halloran curates this exquisite program of chamber works – two written by composers early in their careers\, contrasted with a mature work from Brahms written over a 20-year period.\nBritten composed his Phantasy Quartet at just 18 years old\, while studying at the Royal College of Music. Written in a symmetrical structure like an arch\, this work begins in silence and eventually returns to it.\nPoulenc’s Trio – also composed as a young man – was completed in a hotel in Cannes. There he bumped into none other than Igor Stravinsky\, who gave him some guidance. The Neo-classical style of this exquisite music reflects Stravinsky’s influence\, alongside touches of Mozart.\nIn contrast\, Brahms’ Piano Quartet No.3 is a more serious affair\, befitting the middle-aged composer experiencing anguish in his personal life. Lyrical\, passionate and defiant\, the “Werther” Quartet references Goethe’s story about a young man in a state of unrequited love. \nSunday 18 August 2024\, 11:00am\nIwaki Auditorium\nTICKETS: Standard $60 / Concession $55 / Child $20

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Mozart and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Conductor Jen Winley helms this concert paying tribute to artists who inspire other artists\, including Brahms’ First Symphony\, containing musical influence from his hero Beethoven. \nFauré’s 1919 Masques et Bergamasques was originally written as theatre music\, inspired by the clownish Commedia Dell’Arte troupe at the heart of Verlaine’s poem Clair de Lune. This suite of good-humoured theatricality was cheekily described by one of Fauré’s contemporaries as ‘Mozart imitating Fauré’. \nThe opening of Brahms’ First Symphony is astonishing – it seems to have already been playing when we\, the audience\, intrude upon its crashing chords. In this way\, it’s similar to the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth. Indeed\, the influence of Beethoven is palpable in this symphony\, and yet\, with its buttery lyricism and boisterous momentum\, its signature is thoroughly Brahms’. \nThursday 15 August 2024\, 7:30pm\nDuration: approx. 2 hours including interval \nMelbourne Town Hall \nTICKETS: Standard $45-$105; Concession $40-$100; Child (under 18 years) $20

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Metropolis: Hidden Thoughts II
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, Human Rights lawyer Julian Burnside QC asked Australians to write letters of support and encouragement to Asylum Seekers in detention on Nauru Island. \nAround 2000 letters were sent to Nauru and almost all were returned to the sender undelivered and unopened. Composer Katy Abbott opened many of the letters and together with writer Maureen Johnson\, compiled the libretto for the second work in her Hidden Thoughts series. \nThe work exclusively uses the words contained in the letters and is a reflection of the generous heart of Australians. \nThe letters exude kindness\, compassion\, and warmth as they weave everyday stories and mundane domestic activities into stories of home and a sense of place. They are humorous\, poignant and generous. The letter writers were not afraid to express outrage at the injustice of detention nor afraid to give effusive gestures using words\, drawings and offers of friendship. Being addressed to a particular person\, the letters reveal not only the letter writer’s individual character but also their deep concern for the recipient’s wellbeing. \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nLeonard Weiss CF* conductor\nLotte Betts-Dean mezzo-soprano\nRichard Piper narrator\n*Cybec Assistant ConductorProgram \nKaty Abbott** Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender\nLibretto: Maureen Johnson with Katy Abbott \n**MSO Composer in Residence\nContent warning: We recognise the subject matter of Katy Abbott’s work Hidden Thoughts II could be an intense and emotional experience for some\, especially those directly affected by offshore detention. \nThursday 01 August 2024\, 8:30pm\nDuration: approx. 1 hour\, no interval\nIwaki Auditorium Rescheduled from 3 August 2024\nTICKETS: $55 Standard / $50 Concession

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Jaime conducts Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:Experience two vivid depictions of Shakespeare’s most famous love story\, conducted by Jaime Martín. Plus\, Christian Li joins the MSO to perform Paganini’s heroic violin concerto. \nTchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture – while inspired by Shakespeare’s great tragedy – was designed to stand on its own\, with various themes depicting different characters and moments in the plot. The overture’s famous “love theme” is ingrained in the memories of millennials everywhere as the ‘kiss’ in video game The Sims. \nComposer Niccolò Paganini achieved technical feats on the violin that were considered impossible by many. In fact\, his virtuosic talents were so remarkable that they stirred up rumours that he’d sold his soul to the devil in exchange for such profound gifts. His First Violin Concerto traverses memorable melodies and mind-blowing virtuosity in a thrilling display of theatricality\, performed here by Christian Li. \nSergei Prokofiev’s score for Romeo and Juliet – written for the famous Mariinsky Theatre – is some of his best known and loved. His music perfectly depicts the romance and tragedy of history’s most famous love story. \nThursday 18 July7:30 PM\nSaturday 20 July7:30 PM\nRunning Time: 2 hours (including interval) \nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nPrice range\nStandard$81.00 – $142.00\nConcession*$76.00 – $137.00\nGroups (10 or more) \nStandard$68.85 – $120.70\nConcession*$64.40 – $116.45
