DESCRIPTION:Avoid peak hour with a quick post-work Beethoven fix at this early-evening concert of his energetic and playful Seventh and Eighth symphonies. \n\n\n\n\nThe Seventh gathers momentum as it bounds along with great energy. Similar to the Sixth\, it has slight tinge of the pastoral\, though the mood is darker and punchier than its predecessor. After its premiere in 1813\, the crowd demanded to hear the second movement again – but you’ll only need to hear it once to be humming its theme on the tram home. \nIn 1812 when he was almost completely deaf\, Beethoven composed his Eighth Symphony\, which has been described quite brilliantly as one of the ‘shortest\, weirdest\, and most compelling symphonies of the 19th Century’ (The Guardian). What appears on the surface as light-hearted playfulness is in reality a radical work that challenged the idea of the symphony as a genre. Written in a symmetrical structure like an arch\, this work begins in silence and eventually returns to it.\nPoulenc’s Trio – also composed as a young man – was completed in a hotel in Cannes. There he bumped into none other than Igor Stravinsky\, who gave him some guidance. The Neo-classical style of this exquisite music reflects Stravinsky’s influence\, alongside touches of Mozart.\nIn contrast\, Brahms’ Piano Quartet No.3 is a more serious affair\, befitting the middle-aged composer experiencing anguish in his personal life. DESCRIPTION:Conductor Jen Winley helms this concert paying tribute to artists who inspire other artists\, including Brahms’ First Symphony\, containing musical influence from his hero Beethoven. \nFauré’s 1919 Masques et Bergamasques was originally written as theatre music\, inspired by the clownish Commedia Dell’Arte troupe at the heart of Verlaine’s poem Clair de Lune. This suite of good-humoured theatricality was cheekily described by one of Fauré’s contemporaries as ‘Mozart imitating Fauré’. \nThe opening of Brahms’ First Symphony is astonishing – it seems to have already been playing when we\, the audience\, intrude upon its crashing chords. In this way\, it’s similar to the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth.
