SUMMARY:Australian Youth Orchestra: Mood - Mahler and Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Music as stormy as the depths of winter\, blazing with the fiery energy of the Australian Youth Orchestra. \nUnder the baton of Nicholas Carter\, almost 100 of Australia’s best and brightest young musicians assemble for some of the most momentous works of the orchestral world. \nMahler and Wagner were two formidable figures in an era when music was all about grand emotions\, big sounds\, and pushing boundaries. Wagner’s transcendent Prelude und Liebestod is a harrowing rumination on the perils of love\, and trembles with anticipation. Passion and heartache swell through the orchestra\, stirring from the opening touch of the cello. \nMahler’s Symphony No.5 is bold. Hold your breath as solo trumpet commands its opening; the herald of a work that twists and turns through tension and tenderness. Out of the anguish of a funeral march unfurls the heart-rending release of the symphony’s Adagietto\, one of history’s greatest love letters\, rich with eternal yearning. Across 70 minutes of music\, joy\, grief and hope vie for their place in the spotlight. \nOpening the program\, the afternoon features the world premiere of Overt by Australian composer Iain Grandage. Each young musician shines in this concerto for orchestra\, written in honour of Colin Cornish AM who led AYO from 2005 to 2023. \nThis is bold music. Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of drama\, with Mood: Mahler and Wagner. \nSunday 14 July 5:00 PM\nRunning Time: 2 hours 15 minutes (including 20 minute interval)\nArts Centre Melbourne\, Hamer Hall \nPrice range: Standard $50.00 – $65.00; Concession**$40.00; Youth (Under 26 years)$30.00

DESCRIPTION:The Australian Youth Orchestra brings together the country’s finest young musicians. This February\, under the baton of dynamic young French conductor\, Alexandre Bloch they will perform favourite Hungarian and Russian classics with the energy and enthusiasm only AYO can. Audiences will be delighted by Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2\, performed with Brisbane born pianist and 2008 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Award winner\, Maxwell Foster. AYO will also perform the romantic and stirring music from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet – a stormy tale of fate\, love and tragedy. This extraordinary ballet music follows Shakespeare’s ‘star-crossed lovers’\, and is sure to enchant the audience in this Valentine’s Day weekend concert. \nJoin us for this special performance\, and experience the brilliance of the Australian Youth Orchestra before they embark on their International Tour across Europe and China. \nKODÁLY / Dances of Galánta\nRACHMANINOV  / Piano Concerto No.2 \nPROKOFIEV / Romeo and Juliet: Suite
