DESCRIPTION:‘Gaelic Voices’ presents three orchestral works inspired by encounters with Scotland and Ireland: Mendelssohn’s stormy Fingals’ Cave followed a visit to the coast of Scotland; Irish Isles Suite is a beautiful evocation by contemporary Dublin composer Ailbhe McDonagh of locations she knows well; Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony\, which premiered in Boston in 1896\, incorporates traditional tunes brought to North America by Irish immigrants. DESCRIPTION:Music has provided an extraordinary opportunity to combine cultural traditions and the next concert by the Preston Symphony Orchestra demonstrates this to the full. It’s an opportunity to hear the third symphony of Black American composer Florence Price alongside Dvořák’s 9th symphony\, ‘From the New World’ – both works drawing on the composers’ musical origins\, American spirituals in the case of Price\, and for Dvořák\, the Bohemian folk music of his homeland.  The orchestra is conducted by David Le Guen\, and opens with a fanfare composed in 2021 for the inauguration of President Joe Biden.

DESCRIPTION:2025 is the 75th anniversary of the Preston Symphony Orchestra and the opening concert for the year marks the occasion with a bang. Shostakovich is frequently requested by the orchestra’s players and his Festive Overture makes for a celebratory start. A core part of the orchestra’s identity is the annual Youth Concerto Competition – and the first concert of the year features violinist Anne-Marie Johnson\, the winner of the Youth Concerto Competition in 2008\, now Acting Associate Concertmaster at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She is returning to Preston in 2025 as the soloist in Bruch’s awe-inspiring first violin concerto. Contemporary Australian music is also an important part of PSO. DESCRIPTION:The art deco splendour of Coburg Town Hall is the venue for the next concert by the Preston Symphony Orchestra. ‘World around us’ spans time and space – from the seasons to the stars. With conductor Andrew Groch\, the orchestra presents an afternoon of music featuring works by First Nations composer James Henry\, rising Sydney composer Ella Macens\, and symphonic hero Antonin Dvorak. Henry’s ‘Warrin’\, originally commissioned by the Melbourne String Ensemble\, will have its premiere performance orchestrated for full orchestra. Ella Macen’s work ‘The Space between Stars’ is a transcendent engagement with the night sky. The concert begins with Dvorak’s overture\, ‘In Nature’s Realm’\, and concludes with his Symphony No 8– both works evocative of the sounds and songs of the countryside Dvorak loved. \n
