SUMMARY:The Australian Ballet: Harlequinade
DESCRIPTION:A lively love story based on commedia dell’arte\, Harlequinade was created in 1900 by Marius Petipa\, who choreographed some of classical ballet’s most enduring works\, including Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. \n\n\n\n\nWorking with the original notation of Petipa’s choreography\, Alexei Ratmansky\, former director of the Bolshoi Ballet and artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre\, has produced a loving and humorous revival. \nHarlequin and Columbine are in love\, but her father\, who wants her to marry a rich buffoon\, has her locked up by Pierrot\, his loyal servant. Pierrot’s wife\, sympathetic to the young couple\, helps her escape\, and a Good Fairy gives Harlequin a magical slap stick that helps him triumph over the odds and win Columbine’s hand in marriage. \nThe melodic\, lilting score is by Riccardo Drigo\, a close collaborator of Tchaikovsky’s; the sets and costumes were created by Robert Perdziola\, based on a close study of the 1900 originals\, which are held at a museum in St Petersburg. \nAfter his century-long sleep\, the irrepressible Harlequin is wide awake and ready to charm ballet lovers of all ages. \nPerformance dates & times\n\n\n\nFriday 17 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 18 Jun 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nMonday 20 Jun 6:30 PM\n\n\nTuesday 21 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\nWednesday 22 Jun 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM\n\n\nThursday 23 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\nFriday 24 Jun 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 25 Jun 1:30 PM\, 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:The Australian Ballet: Kunstkammer
DESCRIPTION:Never before has The Australian Ballet presented contemporary dance of this scale and ambition. Commissioned for the 60th anniversary of Nederlands Dans Theater\, the world’s most celebrated contemporary company\, and now presented for the first time outside of the Netherlands by The Australian Ballet\, Kunstkamer is the joint creation of four choreographers: frequent collaborators Paul Lightfoot and Sol León; Marco Goecke; and the Canadian prodigy Crystal Pite. \nInspired by the 18th-century cabinet of curiosities\, this work draws together diverse elements – stark movement\, song\, film\, spoken word – into an eclectic and fascinating whole\, bound together by recurring motifs and characters and featuring music by a vast array of composers from Beethoven to Bach to Britten\, Janis Joplin to Joby Talbot. \nThe choreography\, moving from the intimacy and humour of solos and pas de deux to intricate waves of ensemble movement\, references dance theatre traditions while exploring new frontiers of expression. \nLike a modern museum curated with wit and incisive intelligence\, Kunstkamer invites you to wonder at the endless possibilities of art. \nDavid’s Insight\n“As The Australian Ballet approaches its 60th anniversary celebrations\, it seems fitting to perform a work created as a 60th anniversary celebration. Kunstkamer is dance at its most surprising\, seen through the lens of some of the most inventive choreographers working today. This work takes The Australian Ballet in a new direction\, exploring new movements and nuances. What unfolds is a world of curiosity and beauty.”

SUMMARY:Australian Ballet: Giselle Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:Love conquers death in the ultimate Romantic ballet. Since its premiere in 1841\, Giselle has captured the imagination and torn at the heart. \nA village girl falls in love with a man who is not all he seems. When she finds out his deception\, she dies of a broken heart. Transformed into a spirit\, she battles to save her lover in a wood haunted by the ghosts of jilted women. \nFor the ballerina\, it offers a career-making opportunity to show off not just technique but emotional range\, as she moves from an innocent girl to a tender\, womanly spirit. Maina Gielgud’s acclaimed production\, with Peter Farmer’s atmospheric designs\, perfectly captures the ballet’s dramatic blend of real-life passions and otherworldly apparitions. \nYearning\, madness\, supernatural forces and transcendent\, redemptive love: Giselle is the Romantic era crystallised in one perfect work of art.
