SUMMARY:Astra Choir: Poetic Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:POETRY INTO MULTIPLE VOICES \nPremiering two vocal-poetic cycles for choir and solo voices: \nDavid Howell (Dan Christie) INTO THE NIGHT BEFORE THE SUN. 10 Songs of Travel (2022);  Andrée Greenwell (Rilke\, Ross Gibson\, Felicity Plunkett) THREE PIECES FOR CHOIR (2021) \nwith choral poetics of Keith Humble (Wen Ting-Yung)\, Elisabeth Lutyens (W. H. Auden)\, Peggy Glanville-Hicks (Wallace Stevens)\, Carl Vine (Thomas Campion) \nAstra invites you to experience two concerts that explore how music thinks. Automated Intelligence and Poetic Intelligence offer contrasting reflections on what musical intelligence can be. \nThese concerts traverse music generated through rule-based systems\, algorithmic processes\, and machine learning—and music shaped by the inner workings of language and metaphor\, and in turn shaping these with the choral voice. \n\nSat\, 6 Sep\, 8pm – 10pm AEST\n\n\n\n\nChurch of All Nations\, Carlton\n\nTICKETS: $35 – $20

SUMMARY:Astra Chamber Choir: Julius Eastman - Gay Guerrilla
DESCRIPTION:Julius Eastman: Gay Guerrilla \nWhat I am trying to achieve is to be what I am to the fullest – black to the fullest\, a musician to the fullest\, and a homosexual to the fullest.\n– Julius Eastman \nPeter Dumsday\, Joy Lee\, Georgina Lewis\, Christopher Nankervis\, pianos\nJudith Dodsworth\, voice\nsingers from The Astra Choir\ndirected by Andrew Byrne \nProgram:\nEVIL N***** (1979)\, four pianos (Australian premiere)\nPRELUDE TO THE HOLY PRESENCE OF JOAN D’ARC (1981)\, solo voice\nJOY BOY (1974)\, voices and high instruments (Australian premiere)\nGAY GUERRILLA (1979)\, four pianos (Australian premiere) \nJulius Eastman (1940-90) is increasingly recognised as one of visionary composers of 20th-century music. As a gay Black man\, Eastman faced exclusion and even hostility from multiple sides in the US musical community. However\, he channelled that adversity into a music language of searing intensity. \nEastman’s music is a bold fusion of the avant-garde and political activism. His works bear provocative titles like Evil N***** and Gay Guerrilla\, defiantly affirming his identity as an African-American and as a gay man. Yet it is Eastman’s gripping\, propulsive musical language\, combining minimalism with punk sensibility\, that commands attention. \nIn recent years\, interest in Eastman’s work has surged after a period of obscurity following his untimely death. This concert marks the Australian premiere of several of his significant compositions\, offering audiences an opportunity to experience the raw power and emotional depth of Eastman’s music. \nSaturday 3 August\, 7:00 pm \n180 Palmerston St\, Carlton VIC 3053Map \nTickets: $35\, concession $20 \nThe Saturday evening performance is SOLD OUT. \nDue to popular demand\, Astra is presenting an additional performance of Gay Guerrilla on\nSUNDAY AUGUST 4 at 5PM.
