SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: SONG OF SONGS
DESCRIPTION:Our first concert for 2020 is a programme of brilliant and ecstatic works inspired by the Song of Solomon; text that has inspired composers from across the centuries. SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: A Ceremony of Carols
DESCRIPTION:Gloriana’s final concert for 2019 is a magnificent program of music to welcome in the Christmas season. \nBeginning with gems by Praetorius\, Mouton and Josquin\, the main work in this program is Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols\, one of the composer’s most delightful and endearingly popular works. We are thrilled to be collaborating with harpist Yuko Tomonaga for this performance. Poulenc’s Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël take us from the infinite tenderness of O magnum mysterium to the almost breathless excitement of Hodie Christus natus est. Giles Swayne galvanises the text of the Magnificat by bringing in nothing less than a Zulu warrior chant. Sir John Tavener’s Mother and Child\, a truly awe-inspiring work\, receives its Melbourne premiere in this concert. Music also by Herbert Howells and Jan Sandström. \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nMichael Praetorius (1571—1621): In dulci jubilo à 2\, 3 & 4\nJean Mouton (c.1459—1522): Nesciens Mater\nJosquin Desprez (c.1450—1521): Præter rerum seriem\nBenjamin Britten (1913—1976): A Ceremony of Carols\nFrancis Poulenc (1899—1963): Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël\nGiles Swayne (b.1946): Magnificat\nHerbert Howells (1892—1983): Three Carol-Anthems: A Spotless Rose/Sing lullaby/Here is the little door\nJan Sandström (b.1954): Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen\nSir John Tavener (1944—2013): Mother and Child \nGloriana Chamber Choir directed by Andrew Raiskums.\nYuko Tomonaga\, harp.

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: TRANSCENDENCE
DESCRIPTION:Monteverdi’s Missa in illo tempore was first published alongside the celebrated 1610 Vespers. In its style\, the Vespers is very much of the moment\, whereas the Missa in illo tempore looks back to the great parody masses of the sixteenth century. Like the Vespers\, the Missa in illo tempore is also conceived on a grand scale\, and enthralls with its glorious tracts of sound. \nHenry Purcell’s anthems offer a very different experience: small in scale but potent in their musical gestures. \nOlivier Messiaen’s Cinq Rechants\, loosely based on the Tristan and Isolde legend\, is a garden of sensuous and virtuosic writing for 12 soloists. \nVirtuosity is also a prominent feature of JS Bach’s Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied—a work which is no less than a dazzling three-movement concerto for double chorus. \nJoin us for this programme of choral works transcendental in their scope\, variety and impact. \n2:30pm Sunday 22 September\n\nGloriana Chamber Choir directed by Andrew Raiskums\n\n\nClaudio Monteverdi (1567—1643): Missa In illo tempore\n\n\nHenry Purcell (1659—1695): Three anthems: Lord\, how long wilt though be angry?/Remember not\, Lord\, our offences/I was glad \n\n\nOlivier Messiaen (1908—1992): Cinq Rechants \n\n\nJ.S. Bach (1685—1750): Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied BWV 225\n\nBookings: https://www.trybooking.com/book/sessions?eid=467615 or call 0409 802 892

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: LAMENTATIONS
DESCRIPTION:Gloriana’s first concert for 2019 – our 25th anniversary season – is a programme of musical riches for the Easter season. Palestrina’s majestic double-choir Stabat Mater and Tallis’ eloquent Lamentations are both classics. Allegri’s beloved Miserere\, involving three groups of singers\, finds a contemporary reflection in Catalan composer Bernat Vivancos’ setting of this powerful psalm. \nBrumel’s Missa et ecce terræ motus thrills with its welter of canonic detail. James Macmillan’s Tenebrae Responsories bring us right into the Passion of Christ with choral writing of staggering emotional power. This programme will make a deep impression on singers and audience alike. We look forward to sharing this magnificent music with you. \nGiovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525—1594): Stabat Mater\nThomas Tallis (c.1505—1585): Lamentations of Jeremiah II\nAntoine Brumel (c.1460—1512): Gloria from Missa et ecce terrae motus\nGregorio Allegri (c.1582—1652): Miserere\nBernat Vivancos (b.1973): Obriu-me els llavis\, Senyor\nJames Macmillan (b.1959): Tenebrae Responsories \nTickets: $40 \nBookings: https://www.trybooking.com/book/sessions?eid=467611 or call 0409802892

SUMMARY:DURUFLÉ REQUIEM
DESCRIPTION:This all-French programme brings together two of the most imposing choral works from twentieth-century France: Duruflé’s sublime Requiem and Francis Poulenc’s searing Figure Humaine. \nClearly referring to Fauré’s example\, Durufle’s Requiem is a tour-de-force; from the use of Gregorian chants to generate almost all the thematic material to the ease with which Duruflé builds beguiling textures around these chants\, and the virtuosity of the organ part. \nFor this concert we are thrilled to be joined by award-winning organist-composer Calvin Bowman. \nFrancis Poulenc regarded Figure Humaine\, a cantata for two six-part choirs written during the Nazi occupation of France\, as one of his finest works. Using a selection of poems by Paul Eluard\, including the celebrated ‘Liberté’\, Figure Humaine expresses ‘the suffering of the people of France’; and the ‘hope of the final triumph over tyranny’. \nThis programme also features Fauré’s Messe Basse\, in a transcription for a cappella choir\, and Messiaen’s spellbinding O sacrum convivium. \nThis will be a magical afternoon of music and we look forward to seeing you there. \nGloriana Chamber Choir directed by Andrew Raiskums \nCalvin Bowman\, organist \n2:30pm Sunday September 23 \nSacred Heart Church\, Carlton \nTickets: $35 \nBookings: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=335646&

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir: HEAVENLY HARMONIES
DESCRIPTION:In the late sixteenth century a legend grew up around Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli. The Council of Trent had expressed concerns that polyphony obscured sacred texts\, thus interfering with the listener’s devotion. \nBut the simple\, declamatory style of much of the Missa Papae Marcelli convinced the church authorities that polyphony could be intelligible as well as beautiful. In fact\, nineteenth-century musicologists dubbed Palestrina the ‘saviour of polyphony’. Hyperbole aside\, there is no doubt that the Missa Papae Marcelli is one of Palestrina’s greatest achievements – a work marked by its lucidity\, concision and sheer splendour of sound. \nThe mood of elevation in the Missa Papae Marcelli carries into the other works in this programme\, which includes gems by Harris\, Vaughan Williams and James MacMillan\, and riveting soundscapes by Rautavaara and Pärt. \nProgram: \nGiovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525-1594) Missa Papæ Marcelli\nSir William Harris (1883-1973) Bring us\, O Lord God\nRalph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Three Shakespeare Songs\nClare Maclean (b. 1958) Christ the King\nEinojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016): Die erste Elegie\nArvo Pärt (b.1935): Da pacem Domine \n

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: BRAHMS GERMAN REQUIEM
DESCRIPTION:From its first performance Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem was immediately recognised as a masterpiece of exceptional vision\, confirming Brahms’ reputation as a composer of international stature. Brahms drew his texts from the Lutheran Bible – texts that emphasise faith in the Resurrection and comfort to the living. \nThe work’s seven movements are arranged in a palindrome around the central fourth movement Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen\, which marks a shift from the solemnity of the first three movements to the certainty of comfort in the last three. Ein Deutsches Requiem is performed here in a version created by Brahms featuring a two-piano accompaniment. \nBach exerted a profound influence on Brahms and his motet Jesu\, meine Freude BWV 227 uses the same palindromic structure to unify its strongly-characterised musical ideas. \nFor this performance we are thrilled to be joined by Andrea Katz and Dean Sky-Lucas as our duo pianists\, alongside soprano soloist Erika Tandiono and bass-baritone soloist Nicholas Dinopoulos. \nTickets : $35 \nBookings: www.gloriana.com.au or trybooking.com/book/event?eid=335641 \nWe look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: Fauré Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem is one of the most cherished of all choral works. \nOf the Requiem\, Fauré wrote “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem\, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.” \nMarked by its gently luminous scoring and melodic beauty\, Faure’s Requiem has been a favourite of audiences since its first performance in 1888. \nThis all-French programme will also feature Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine\, Francis Poulenc’s sparkling Mass in G and a rare performance of Daniel-Lesur’s Le Cantique des Cantiques. \n\n\nWe are delighted to present this work with soloists bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos and soprano Erika Tandiono. \nDon’t miss the chance to hear these treasures of the French choral repertoire. \n\n\nGloriana Chamber Choir & Orchestra directed by Andrew Raiskums \nNicholas Dinopoulos\, bass-baritone \nErika Tandiono\, soprano \nBookings: www.gloriana.com.au or call (03) 8319 0942

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir: SPEM IN ALIUM
DESCRIPTION:Gloriana’s second subscription concert in its 2017 season is built around one of the most celebrated of all choral works: Thomas Tallis’ monumental forty-part motet Spem in alium\, a work of such scale and vision that mark it as a watershed moment in music history.\n\nGloriana make a specialty of performing this work as the composer intended – in the round – so that the audience can follow the directional nature of the writing and be immersed in its sonic splendour. The opportunity to hear forty individual voices surrounding the audience is a singularly thrilling experience.\n\nTallis’ masterpiece will be woven into an all-English programme that includes Byrd’s equally imposing Tribue Domine\, Herbert Howells’ deeply moving Requiem\, Britten’s Five Flower Songs and works by Harris\, Jonathan Dove and others.\n\nYou can purchase tickets to Spem in Alium online now through our website www.gloriana.com.au \nDon’t miss the chance to hear this glorious work LIVE!

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL PASSION
DESCRIPTION:The centrepiece of our first concert for 2017 is David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion\, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2008. \nA breathtakingly spare and deeply moving work\, Lang draws his inspiration from well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Developing the religious overtones of the original story\, Lang casts the young match girl’s tragic journey as a modern Passion Play. The resulting work is both minimalist and profound—an oratorio for today. \nOur concert also features James Macmillan’s sublime Miserere\, excerpts from the Tenebrae Responsories of Victoria and Gesualdo\, as well as music by Liszt and Sir John Tavener. \nBookings: www.gloriana.com.au or call (03) 8319 0942 \nWe look forward to seeing you there.
