SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Augmented Mozart & Fiery Boccherini
DESCRIPTION:Australian National Academy Of Music Ensemble (ANAM)\nTimo-Veikko Valve cello\, director \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart\nString Quartet in D minor\, K.421 – arr. for strings Valve \nLuigi Boccherini\nSymphony in D minor\, Op.12 No.4 (G. 506) ‘La Casa Del Diavolo’ \nAbout the concert\nTimo-Veikko Valve performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of augmented Mozart and fiery Boccherini as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nBeginning with Mozart’s String Quartet No.15\, the piece elucidates the chromatic tendencies and hidden beauties that his compositions have endured. Finishing with what is undoubtedly Boccherini’s best-known composition\, Symphony No.4 in D minor is a piece of charm and refinement. A performance of epic proportion\, the sheer scale of musicality will stun and delight. \n‘I’ve always imagined that the drama and passion of Mozart’s string quartet K421 would benefit from a larger format. The music is incredibly operatic – it almost demands more than four characters to play it out. I can’t wait to reveal this new arrangement for a large ensemble in our Mostly Mozart concert in the beautiful Elisabeth Murdoch Hall!’ Timo-Veikko Valve \nAbout the artists\nPrincipal cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) Timo-Veikko Valve is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation\, performing as a soloist\, chamber musician and orchestral leader on both modern and period instruments. The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians\, creating alumni that work around the world.

SUMMARY:The Seasons with Lawrence Power
DESCRIPTION:LAWRENCE POWER\, ONE OF THE GREATEST VIOLISTS\, RETURNS AFTER A JOYOUS ANAM DEBUT IN 2017 FOR THIS MULTI-FACETED PROJECT\, PLAYING VIOLIN AND VIOLA WITH EQUAL MASTERY.\n\nThe concert begins with two 20th century landmarks: Berio’s meditation on Sicilian folk song for viola\, percussion and tape\, and Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s most celebrated work for violin and strings\nHartmann’s Concerto funebre expresses his despair at the rise of Nazism\, yet contains a powerful thread of optimism. As he put it: “The intellectual and spiritual hopelessness of the period… are contrasted with an expression of hope…”\nFinally\, Power and ANAM musicians explore the four seasons in Buenos Aires\, in vivid musical settings by tango legend Astor Piazolla. These are interwoven with other ‘seasonal’ gems by Brahms and Schubert\n\nBERIO Naturale\nHARTMANN Concerto funebre\nGARTH KNOX Marin Marais Variations for 4 violas\nBRAHMS Summer Song\nPIAZZOLLA Summer\nBRAHMS In Autumn\nPIAZZOLLA Autumn\nSCHUBERT Der Leiermann\nPIAZZOLLA Winter\nSCHUBERT Fruhlingstraum\nPIAZZOLLA Spring \nLawrence Power viola/violin/director\nANAM Musicians

SUMMARY:The Power of Eight with Tabea Zimmermann
DESCRIPTION:LED BY TABEA ZIMMERMANN\, THREE FASCINATING MUSICAL VOICES ARE UNITED IN THIS PROGRAM THAT CELEBRATES THE VIOLA.\n\nLondoner York Bowen\, a viola player himself\, was also a fine pianist\, and often acted as accompanist to the legendary violist Lionel Tertis. It was for Tertis and his students that Bowen composed this rhapsodic Fantasia\nPaul Hindemith was another viola-playing composer\, and his final chamber work\, the zesty Octet\, includes not one but two violas; the finale features a particularly virtuosic part for first viola – a part Hindemith himself played at the first performance\nYehudi Menuhin regarded his teacher George Enescu as the greatest musician he had ever met\, and; you get some sense of Enescu’s titanic achievements when you hear his bold\, beautiful Octet – a symphony in all but name – which he composed when he was still in his teens\n\nBOWEN Fantasia for four violas\nHINDEMITH Octet\nENESCU String Octet \nTabea Zimmermann viola/director\nANAM Musicians

SUMMARY:Insiders' Guide: Mother Tongue with Tabea Zimmermann & Stefanie Farrands
DESCRIPTION:ANAM alumna Stefanie Farrands studied with Tabea Zimmermann in Berlin and is currently Principal Viola of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 Stefanie won the Freedman Fellowship\, dedicating her prize to commissioning new works by Australian composers. One of these commissions is Yitzhak Yedid’s Mother Tongue – an urgent new work for two violas inspired by the lost language of the Barngarla Aboriginal community. Linguist Ghil’ad Zuckermann will offer insightful commentary on the themes Yedid explores in this music. \nYITZHAK YEDID Mother Tongue \nTabea Zimmermann viola\nStefanie Farrands viola (ANAM alumna 2010)\nProfessor Ghil’ad Zuckermann linguist

SUMMARY:Pastoral Symphony with Tabea Zimmermann
DESCRIPTION:TABEA ZIMMERMANN LEADS THE ANAM MUSICIANS IN MUSIC REDOLENT WITH THE BEAUTY OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS.\n\nVeress was a disciple of fellow Hungarian composer Béla Bartók\, and his four dances\, written in the late 1940s\, are a potent meditation on time and place\nBrahms’ bucolic serenade shines with a deep\, golden orchestral colouring\, partly because Brahms’ instrumentation gives the violas the top line; the scoring does not feature violins\nNo journey to the countryside is more glorious than Beethoven’s. Whether it’s the ‘Scene by the Brook’ or the ‘Thunderstorm’\, the musical scene painting in his Pastoral Symphony represents an almost Olympian ideal\n\nVERESS Four Transylvanian Dances\nBRAHMS Serenade no. 2 in A Major\nBEETHOVEN Symphony no. 6 Pastoral \nTabea Zimmermann viola/director\nANAM Orchestra

SUMMARY:Dialogue: Final ANAM Recital
DESCRIPTION:Program\nRUTH CRAWFORD 9 Preludes for piano\nMICHAEL WILLIAMS Dialogue for oud\, duduk\, piano\, and electronics*\nJAKUB JANKOWSKI Aspects of Return for cello and piano ft. David Moran \n*world premiere \nWritten in the 1920s\, the Ultra-Modernist/Scriabin-Esque 9 Preludes by Ruth Crawford have been overlooked by history. Critics of the time said she can “sling dissonances as mean as any of them\,” referring to the male-dominated field of composition in early 20th Century America. Ruth Crawford is a trailblazer who deserves recognition and I’m excited to perform this work in what most likely is an Australian premiere. \nNew Zealand composer Michael F Williams experiments with combining sound-worlds in his new work Dialogue. This cross-cultural exploration features audio samples of the Duduk and Oud\, two Middle Eastern instruments that engage in a dialogue with the piano. Mike is a lecturer at the University of Waikato where we first met\, and this piece is the beginning of a larger project which explores the combination of piano and non-western instruments through new compositions. \nTo round out this programme I’ll be joined on stage with Cellist David Moran and I couldn’t think of a better way to leave ANAM! Each movement in Jakub Jankowski – Composer‘s work Aspects of Return illustrates a different metaphor of return and is supplemented with a specific quotation. \nI. Prologue: ‘…there is always the danger that the things we have neglected will return with added force.’ – Carl Jung\nII. Nocturne: ‘Ever-newer waters flow on those who step into the same rivers.’ – Heraclitus of Ephesus\nIII. Capriccio: ‘And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.’ – T.S. Eliot

SUMMARY:Beethoven\, Haydn and Schubert
DESCRIPTION:Gábor Takács-Nagy is the complete musician; a founding member of the Takács Quartet\, he has gone on to become an inspirational conductor and teacher of chamber music performance. In this sumptuous concert\, he directs ANAM musicians in a banquet of music from one of the golden ages of music in Vienna. Mozart composed his miraculous Symphony no. 25 when he was just 17; Haydn’s jubilant Symphony no. 90 on the other hand\, is a product of the composer’s rich maturity\, by which time his fame had spread through Europe. Beethoven’s rarely-heard Overture honours Hungary’s first king\, while Schubert’s delicious Overture is better known as the one to the play Rosamunde; a publisher appropriated it for that purpose decades after Schubert’s death. \nSCHUBERT Overture Die Zauberharfe\nMOZART Symphony no. 25\nBEETHOVEN Overture König Stephan\nHAYDN Symphony no. 90 \nGábor Takács-Nagy conductor\nANAM Orchestra \nDuration: approx. 2 hours (including interval)

SUMMARY:The Italian Sound
DESCRIPTION:Umberto Clerici\, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Cello\, has created this fascinating program\, which asks\, in his words: “What can be considered an ‘Italian Sound’? Does it come from the precious old Italian string instruments or from the long tradition of opera and bel canto that made Italian music famous around the world?” In exploring this question\, Clerici will look at three centuries of music\, taking in a jewel of the Italian baroque by Vivaldi\, the string quartet Verdi composed while he was waiting for Aida rehearsals to begin in Naples\, music by Philip Glass disciple Ezio Bosso and much more besides. How will it sound? Bellissimo! \nSOLLIMA Hell 1 (from Music for the Divine Comedy)\nVIVALDI Cello Concerto in A minor\nBOSSO Sea Prayer\nPUCCINI I crisantemi\nVERDI String Quartet arr. string orchestra \nUmberto Clerici cello/director\nANAM Musicians \nDuration: approx. 1 hour

SUMMARY:Clara
DESCRIPTION:Clara Schumann was one of the great musicians of the 19th century. Acclaimed for her pianism by the crowned heads of Europe in her 20s\, she went on to become one of the most respected performers and teachers of her age\, in a life in which she was also a composer\, wife and muse to Robert Schumann\, mother to their eight children and\, after Schumann’s death\, mentor and muse to Brahms. Her few compositions have a unique\, poetic beauty\, which will be celebrated in this concert to mark the 200th anniversary of her birth. This glorious program concludes with music Robert dedicated to – and was first performed by – Clara\, and the first work ever composed for piano and string quartet. The joyous\, passionate Piano Quintet is one of Robert Schumann’s masterpieces. \nC SCHUMANN Piano Trio\nC SCHUMANN 3 Romances for violin and piano\nR SCHUMANN Piano Quintet \nRobin Wilson violin/director\nANAM Musicians \nDuration: approx. 65 minutes

SUMMARY:Petrushka
DESCRIPTION:Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes changed the history of ballet and the history of music too. Stravinsky composed all of his early landmark ballet scores for Diaghilev’s company\, including Petrushka. It’s all energy\, lyricism\, playfulness and pathos\, wrapped up in kaleidoscopic orchestral colours; it doesn’t take much imagination to see Petrushka and the Ballerina in their fairground tale of love and jealousy. Romantic pursuit lies at the heart of de Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos also: the miller’s attractive young wife is being pursued by the pompous old magistrate\, whose amorous designs are eventually undone\, to music of ravishing beauty and fiery rhythms. The ballet from Borodin’s opera Prince Igor was one of the Ballets Russes’ first great successes; the treasure-chest of memorable melodies in these Polovtsian Dances makes for a dynamic curtain-raiser. \nBORODIN Prince Igor: Polovtsian Dances\nFALLA El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) – Suite (selections)\nSTRAVINSKY Petrushka (1947) \nEduardo Strausser conductor\nANAM Orchestra \nDuration: approx. 2 hours (including interval)

SUMMARY:Song Cycles with Sara Macliver
DESCRIPTION:Here is a sublime collaboration between one of Australia’s finest sopranos and the pianists of ANAM\, in a program which includes two glorious 19th century song cycles. If you love Grieg’s music for Peer Gynt or his piano concerto\, you will be entranced by the songs he created about a young woman who is rejected by her lover and finds solace in nature and the powers of the underworld. When Grieg first read the poems which inspired these songs\, he found that they were “already set to music – it was only a question of writing it down.” Schumann’s set of songs\, charting the course of a woman’s relationship\, from first meeting to death and beyond\, is one of the great expressions of the Romantic spirit in music. \nProgram to include:\nDUPARC Chansons (selections)\nGRIEG Haugtussa (The Mountain Maid)\nR SCHUMANN Frauenliebe und Leben \nSara Macliver soprano\nANAM Pianists \nDuration: approx. 2 hours (including interval)

SUMMARY:Joy and Heartbreak
DESCRIPTION:Like many wealthy young Europeans of his day\, Mendelssohn travelled widely and found musical inspirationon many of his journeys (think of that expressive musical picture\, The Hebrides). One country brought him particular pleasure: “This is Italy! And now has begun what I have always thought… to be the supreme joy in life.” Inspired by his sojourn there\, the Italian Symphony is sunshine and Chianti in music. Mendelssohn is one of the most frequently performed classical composers of them all\, whereas Gideon Klein’s work had to wait decades to be discovered. \nKLEIN Partita for Strings\nTCHAIKOVSKY Serenade in C major for Strings\, op. 48\nMENDELSSOHN Symphony no. 4 Italian \nGregory Ahss violin\nANAM Orchestra \nDuration: approx. 1.5 hours (including interval)

SUMMARY:A Gateway to the Sublime
DESCRIPTION:In the history of music there can be few examples of a composer ‘exceeding the brief’ with results as astounding as Schubert in his Octet. It was commissioned by one of the composer’s patrons\, Count Ferdinand von Troyer\, a talented amateur clarinettist who had played in the premiere of Beethoven’s celebrated Septet some 20 years earlier. He suggested Schubert compose a companion piece for Beethoven’s work\, which he did faithfully – while also creating one of the richest works in all of chamber music. \nSCHUBERT Octet \nGregory Ahss violin\nANAM Musicians \nDuration: approx. 1 hour

SUMMARY:Bach B Minor Mass
DESCRIPTION:A comment under a YouTube video can speak more directly than an elegantly written program note. About Bach’s B minor Mass\, one user has written: “Probably the best piece of music EVER written\, and I’m not even exaggerating\, I’m being serious.” Completed the year before Bach’s death\, the Mass is one of the most inspiring pieces of music ever composed. As musicologist Alberto Basso has put it: “The Mass in B minor is the consecration of a whole life.” The performance features the magnificent British vocal ensemble VOCES8 on their first Australian tour\, and Australian conductor Benjamin Bayl\, co-founder of the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra. \nJS BACH Mass in B minor \nBenjamin Bayl conductor\nVOCES8 with guest artists Susannah Lawergrenand Amy Moore \nANAM Orchestra \nDuration: approx. 2 hours and 5 minutes (including interval)
