SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Beloved works from Mozart and Schumann.\nThe Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians\, creating alumni that work around the world \nAnthony Marwood performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of revered Mozart and enchanting Schumann as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nJupiter is arguably Mozart’s most revered symphony and is often used as the example when describing the heights his compositional skills reached. The final movement’s theme epitomizes the divine in Mozart’s sounding output\, an embryo which eventually grows a sublime bliss. \nSchumann was another kind of talent\, a later bloomer compared to Mozart\, but definitely someone who could understand and feel Mozart’s talent. A testimony of his reverence for Mozart was shown as the musical journey Schumann started\, Neue Zeitschrift für Musik\, was launched with a Mozart biography as its front page item. \nMorning tea returns to Mostly Mozart in 2023. Join us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\nThursday 16 November 2023 11am;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall  Duration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession) \nExperience this concert online with Australian Digital Concert Hall Click here for live stream tickets

Followed by Martinů’s Sextet for Piano and Wind\, a work that showcases his rich textural writing and colourful harmonic language. Finishing with the rich lyricism of Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds. \nThese woodwind-heavy pieces provide a less familiar palate over which ANAM musicians with director Paavali Jumppanen will paint a thrilling range of sounds and orchestral colours. \nMorning Tea\nMorning tea returns to Mostly Mozart in 2023. SUMMARY:James Crabb: Daring Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:Argentinian tangos and Russian orthodox mysticism are unlikely bed-fellows\, however in the hands of acclaimed classical accordionist James Crabb these worlds find a compelling meeting place. The winner of ANAM’s 2021 Concerto Competition (cello 2021)\, Charlotte Miles joins James to perform Sofia Gubaidulina’s Seven Words for cello\, accordion and strings. \n“Two giants of 20th Century art music with unmistakable voices are the pioneering composers Sofia Gubaidulina and Astor Piazzolla. I’ve chosen three of their most significant orchestral works for this program where both composers push the expressive limits of their musical language and use of instrumentation to the absolute limits. The music is full of drama with highly evocative settings and contrasts taking the musicians and listener on an unforgettable emotional roller-coast ride! Gubaidulina celebrates her 90th birthday this year and it’s also the 100th anniversary for Piazzolla.” – James Crabb \nASTOR PIAZZOLLA Suite Punta del Este for classical accordion and small orchestra\nSOFIA GUBAIDULINA Seven Words for cello\, classical accordion and strings\nASTOR PIAZZOLLA ‘Aconcagua’ Concerto for bandoneon \nJames Crabb classical accordion/director \nCharlotte Miles cello (alumna 2021)\nANAM Musicians\n \nDURATION: APPROX. 1 HOUR\, 15 MINUTES (NO INTERVAL)\nLOCATION: Abbotsford Convent\, Rosina Auditorium\n1 St Heliers St\, ABBOTSFORD VIC \nPRICE: Standard $50.00\nSenior $40.00\nConcession $35.00\nUnder 30 $25.00

SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Augmented Mozart & Fiery Boccherini
DESCRIPTION:Australian National Academy Of Music Ensemble (ANAM)\nTimo-Veikko Valve cello\, director \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart\nString Quartet in D minor\, K.421 – arr. for strings Valve \nLuigi Boccherini\nSymphony in D minor\, Op.12 No.4 (G. 506) ‘La Casa Del Diavolo’ \nAbout the concert\nTimo-Veikko Valve performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of augmented Mozart and fiery Boccherini as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nBeginning with Mozart’s String Quartet No.15\, the piece elucidates the chromatic tendencies and hidden beauties that his compositions have endured. Finishing with what is undoubtedly Boccherini’s best-known composition\, Symphony No.4 in D minor is a piece of charm and refinement. A performance of epic proportion\, the sheer scale of musicality will stun and delight. \n‘I’ve always imagined that the drama and passion of Mozart’s string quartet K421 would benefit from a larger format. The music is incredibly operatic – it almost demands more than four characters to play it out. I can’t wait to reveal this new arrangement for a large ensemble in our Mostly Mozart concert in the beautiful Elisabeth Murdoch Hall!’ Timo-Veikko Valve \nAbout the artists\nPrincipal cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) Timo-Veikko Valve is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation\, performing as a soloist\, chamber musician and orchestral leader on both modern and period instruments. The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians\, creating alumni that work around the world.

SUMMARY:The Seasons with Lawrence Power
DESCRIPTION:LAWRENCE POWER\, ONE OF THE GREATEST VIOLISTS\, RETURNS AFTER A JOYOUS ANAM DEBUT IN 2017 FOR THIS MULTI-FACETED PROJECT\, PLAYING VIOLIN AND VIOLA WITH EQUAL MASTERY.\n\nThe concert begins with two 20th century landmarks: Berio’s meditation on Sicilian folk song for viola\, percussion and tape\, and Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s most celebrated work for violin and strings\nHartmann’s Concerto funebre expresses his despair at the rise of Nazism\, yet contains a powerful thread of optimism. As he put it: “The intellectual and spiritual hopelessness of the period… are contrasted with an expression of hope…”\nFinally\, Power and ANAM musicians explore the four seasons in Buenos Aires\, in vivid musical settings by tango legend Astor Piazolla. These are interwoven with other ‘seasonal’ gems by Brahms and Schubert\n\nBERIO Naturale\nHARTMANN Concerto funebre\nGARTH KNOX Marin Marais Variations for 4 violas\nBRAHMS Summer Song\nPIAZZOLLA Summer\nBRAHMS In Autumn\nPIAZZOLLA Autumn\nSCHUBERT Der Leiermann\nPIAZZOLLA Winter\nSCHUBERT Fruhlingstraum\nPIAZZOLLA Spring \nLawrence Power viola/violin/director\nANAM Musicians

SUMMARY:The Power of Eight with Tabea Zimmermann
DESCRIPTION:LED BY TABEA ZIMMERMANN\, THREE FASCINATING MUSICAL VOICES ARE UNITED IN THIS PROGRAM THAT CELEBRATES THE VIOLA.\n\nLondoner York Bowen\, a viola player himself\, was also a fine pianist\, and often acted as accompanist to the legendary violist Lionel Tertis. It was for Tertis and his students that Bowen composed this rhapsodic Fantasia\nPaul Hindemith was another viola-playing composer\, and his final chamber work\, the zesty Octet\, includes not one but two violas; the finale features a particularly virtuosic part for first viola – a part Hindemith himself played at the first performance\nYehudi Menuhin regarded his teacher George Enescu as the greatest musician he had ever met\, and; you get some sense of Enescu’s titanic achievements when you hear his bold\, beautiful Octet – a symphony in all but name – which he composed when he was still in his teens\n\nBOWEN Fantasia for four violas\nHINDEMITH Octet\nENESCU String Octet \nTabea Zimmermann viola/director\nANAM Musicians

SUMMARY:Insiders' Guide: Mother Tongue with Tabea Zimmermann & Stefanie Farrands
DESCRIPTION:ANAM alumna Stefanie Farrands studied with Tabea Zimmermann in Berlin and is currently Principal Viola of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 Stefanie won the Freedman Fellowship\, dedicating her prize to commissioning new works by Australian composers. One of these commissions is Yitzhak Yedid’s Mother Tongue – an urgent new work for two violas inspired by the lost language of the Barngarla Aboriginal community. Linguist Ghil’ad Zuckermann will offer insightful commentary on the themes Yedid explores in this music. \nYITZHAK YEDID Mother Tongue \nTabea Zimmermann viola\nStefanie Farrands viola (ANAM alumna 2010)\nProfessor Ghil’ad Zuckermann linguist

SUMMARY:Pastoral Symphony with Tabea Zimmermann
DESCRIPTION:TABEA ZIMMERMANN LEADS THE ANAM MUSICIANS IN MUSIC REDOLENT WITH THE BEAUTY OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS.\n\nVeress was a disciple of fellow Hungarian composer Béla Bartók\, and his four dances\, written in the late 1940s\, are a potent meditation on time and place\nBrahms’ bucolic serenade shines with a deep\, golden orchestral colouring\, partly because Brahms’ instrumentation gives the violas the top line; the scoring does not feature violins\nNo journey to the countryside is more glorious than Beethoven’s. Whether it’s the ‘Scene by the Brook’ or the ‘Thunderstorm’\, the musical scene painting in his Pastoral Symphony represents an almost Olympian ideal\n\nVERESS Four Transylvanian Dances\nBRAHMS Serenade no. 2 in A Major\nBEETHOVEN Symphony no. 6 Pastoral \nTabea Zimmermann viola/director\nANAM Orchestra

Thank you so much for your patience and support. \n\nTHE ANAM ORCHESTRA AND FACULTY TAKE ‘SELF-DRIVE’ TO LOFTY HEIGHTS IN THESE TWO SYMPHONIC MASTERWORKS\, WHICH WILL BE PERFORMED WITHOUT A CONDUCTOR.\n\nThe Eighth is one of the sunniest and most pure of Dvořák’s symphonies. It is packed with good cheer and lilting melodies\nWhen Robert Schumann discovered the score of Schubert’s Great C Major Symphony in 1838 – ten years after Schubert’s death – he also found a profoundly beautiful symphonic epic\, a work which had a far-reaching effect on the future of the symphony. A performance of this supremely human masterpiece automatically becomes an event\n\nDVOŘÁK Symphony no. 8\nSCHUBERT Symphony no. 9 The Great \nANAM Faculty\nANAM Orchestra

SUMMARY:Dialogue: Final ANAM Recital
DESCRIPTION:Program\nRUTH CRAWFORD 9 Preludes for piano\nMICHAEL WILLIAMS Dialogue for oud\, duduk\, piano\, and electronics*\nJAKUB JANKOWSKI Aspects of Return for cello and piano ft. David Moran \n*world premiere \nWritten in the 1920s\, the Ultra-Modernist/Scriabin-Esque 9 Preludes by Ruth Crawford have been overlooked by history. Critics of the time said she can “sling dissonances as mean as any of them\,” referring to the male-dominated field of composition in early 20th Century America. Ruth Crawford is a trailblazer who deserves recognition and I’m excited to perform this work in what most likely is an Australian premiere. \nNew Zealand composer Michael F Williams experiments with combining sound-worlds in his new work Dialogue. This cross-cultural exploration features audio samples of the Duduk and Oud\, two Middle Eastern instruments that engage in a dialogue with the piano. Mike is a lecturer at the University of Waikato where we first met\, and this piece is the beginning of a larger project which explores the combination of piano and non-western instruments through new compositions. \nTo round out this programme I’ll be joined on stage with Cellist David Moran and I couldn’t think of a better way to leave ANAM! Each movement in Jakub Jankowski – Composer‘s work Aspects of Return illustrates a different metaphor of return and is supplemented with a specific quotation. \nI. Prologue: ‘…there is always the danger that the things we have neglected will return with added force.’ – Carl Jung\nII. Nocturne: ‘Ever-newer waters flow on those who step into the same rivers.’ – Heraclitus of Ephesus\nIII. Capriccio: ‘And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.’ – T.S. Eliot
