SUMMARY:Acord Medieval performance Ensemble: Wise and Foolish
DESCRIPTION:Acord’s fourth concert in the 2025 season 31 August: Wise and Foolish \nThe starting point for this concert is the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins which appears in chapter 25 of the Gospel of Matthew. One 11th century response to this was Sponsus\, an extraordinary bilingual musical dramatisation of the parable\, one of the innovative creations of the great Abbey of St Martial in Limoges. This extensive work forms the first part of the concert while the remainder features a range of works responding either wisely or foolishly to certain life events. \nAs always the music is remarkable\, the readings are pithy\, the images are glorious and the refreshments to follow\, topical. Of course there will be cake. \nWe hope you can come. \nSunday August 31\, 11am – 12.00 \nTickets at the door.

SUMMARY:Acord: Dragonslayers
DESCRIPTION:Dragonslayers is Acord’s second concert in the 2025 series at Kathleen Syme and it’s a cracker. See what you think. There are of course the wonderful readings and brilliant images you have come to expect as well as dragonish food – oh and of course there will be cakeTickets at the door $20 – $10

DESCRIPTION:We are about to have the last rehearsal for the fourth concert of our 2024 series at the Kathleen Syme Library\, and everything is looking and sounding good. SUMMARY:Acord: Concert 3 Epiphany in August
DESCRIPTION:Since many folk in the antipodes celebrate Christmas in Winter which for us is June -July\, if you were also going to celebrate Epiphany it would be in August\, wouldn’t it? Well that’s our excuse and there’s such a lot of great music around this holiday that we feel quite justified. It is a commemoration of the manifestation of Christ\, especially to the Magi\, but also at his baptism and at the wedding feast of Cana\, and is celebrated on January 6. What is inexplicable is the connection to the Nativity of Christ since surely that’s where the story of the Three Kings comes in? Apparently even before 354\, the Western Church had separated the celebration of the Nativity of Christ as the feast of Christmas and set its date as December 25; it reserved January 6 particularly for the Three Kings and their offering of gifts to the infant. \nAnyway\, the music is great and you know there’ll be some wonderful readings and heaps of images as well as appropriate refreshments after. \nMargaret Arnold : alto\nRichard Excell : rebec\, vielle\, gemshorn Jerzy Kozlowski : bass; Sue Tweg : reader\, voice; Carol Williams : harp\, rebec\, voice \nSunday 18 Sunday 18 August 2024\, 11:00 am \nKathleen Syme Library and Community Centre\, 251 Faraday St. Carlton \nTickets at the door : $20 / $10

SUMMARY:Acord - Medieval Performance Ensemble: BLACK BOOKS OF HOURS and “BURGUNDIAN BLACK”
DESCRIPTION:BLACK BOOKS OF HOURS & “BURGUNDIAN BLACK”\nIn the 1460s and 1470s there was a trend\, as short-lived as it was spectacular\, for producing Books of Hours on vellum which had been stained black. Short-lived\, both because the iron-gall solution used rendered the vellum fragile (a nightmare for modern conservators) and because only a few rare and costly materials could be used for text and images. And spectacular\, because they arose from the Court of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy\, a cultural centre of spectacle\, art\, literature\, music and fashion. Indeed it was at this court that black grew to become not just the colour of mourning\, but pre-eminent among all colours as the embodiment of power and high status. \nAs usual some very fine examples of music from these black books will be performed with readings and wonderful illustrations. There will be appropriate refreshments afterwards of course. There might even be cake. \nSunday\, June 23\, 11am – 12pm \nTickets at the door ($20 / $10)

SUMMARY:Acord: Big Foot Bertha and the Minstrel King
DESCRIPTION:Big-Foot Bertha & the Minstrel King\n\nPart of a series of Sunday morning concerts of medieval music\, readings and images\, this Sunday concert centres on Big Foot Bertha\, the mother of Charlemagne\, and it is still a mystery as to why she acquired this unusual sobriquet. Also in the story is the King of the Minstrels\, Adenet le Roi who wrote a fanciful story of B F Bertha.\nAdenet le Roi was no ordinary minstrel. His epic poems\, including Berte aus Grans Piés\, Les Enfances Ogier and Cleomadès\, abound in colourful details\, and he engaged with a web of trouvères\, minstrels and patrons in Flanders and from France and England.\n\n“When the words come\, they are merely empty shells without the music. They live as they are sung\, for the words are the body and the music the spirit.” Hildegard von Bingen \n\nMargaret Arnold : alto\, organetto\nRichard Excell : vielles\, rebec\, psaltery\, gemshorn\nJerzy Kozlowski : bass\nSue Tweg : reader\, alto\nCarol Williams : harp\, vielle\, rebec\, voice\n\n\n\nKathleen Syme Library\, 251 Faraday St\, Carlton\n\n\nSundays November 11\, 11 am – 12 noon\nTickets: $20 & $10 (at door)\nEnquiries: +61 425 702 700

SUMMARY:Acord: Hrotsvit and Hildegard
DESCRIPTION:This concert weaves together creative works by two remarkable self-proclaimed ‘strong voices’. In the C10th Hrotsvit (c.935-c.1000) played on her own Saxon name\, describing herself as ‘Clamor Validus Gandesheimensis’. In the C12th\, Abbess Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) wrote that her mission was to proclaim sacred truths with her ‘trumpet voice’. Although they never met or knew of each other\, these women from aristocratic backgrounds had the good fortune to live in places and at a time when early Christianity had become established in Saxony and the Rhineland under the Benedictine rule\, supported by cultural enrichment through Greek and Latin texts flooding into scriptoria via Constantinople. Both women took advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves for scholarship and spiritual creativity in a cloistered life: Hrotsvit took limited vows and enjoyed relative comfort as a secular canoness\, while Hildegard was committed by her parents as a child\nto a full monastic life\, in which she achieved high status as a political and spiritual leader. \nAlthough that all sounds rather sober\, Hrotsvit had a quite spicy sense of humour as you will discover. \nSunday September 17\, 11am \nKathleen Syme Library and Community Centre\, 251 Faraday Street\, Carlton \nTICKETS: S20 (Concession $15)  at door. \n

SUMMARY:Acord: The Chastelain de Couci
DESCRIPTION:The Chastelain de Couci has been celebrated as a singer of songs of love and crusades ever since his own time. His true identity has been a source of confusion for much of that time\, too\, largely because of a fanciful romance concocted about him a century after his life by a certain Jakemes. While this tale is entertaining in a gruesome way (it featured in an Acord concert many years ago)\, the glimpses we have of his actual life are just as interesting and at times poignant. \nCome and celebrate the life and work of this amazing creative artist as presented by Acord with song\, stories and wonderful images. There’ll be refreshments after and lots of chat. \nTickets at the door: $20/$10

SUMMARY:Acord 2023 season concert 1: The Fifteen Joys of Our Lady
DESCRIPTION:Books of Hours were personal prayer books\, but the words were the formal Latin of the Liturgy. SUMMARY:Acord - Medieval Performance Ensemble: The Holy Face
DESCRIPTION:In this concert we explore facets of the world of acheiropoieta: literally “not hand made”\, but more specifically miraculous images of Christ’s face not created by human hands. There have been many claimants to such status\, but in medieval western Europe\, just two attracted the major share of veneration\, pilgrimage\, imitation and prayer: the Veronica in Rome and the Volto Santo di Lucca. Tickets at the door $20 / $10 and there will be appropriate refreshments after.
