Schoenberg was born in Vienna on this day—Friday 13 September—in 1874. Famous for inventing 12-tone serialism, Schoenberg dreaded the number 13 throughout his life, which ended in L.A. in the last minutes of Friday 13 July 1951. (He had spent the day in bed worrying about the date, until ultimately his heart stopped.)
