This bold and out-of-the-box performance brings the music of the highly successful Dutch composer JacobTV (Jacob ter Veldhuis) to Melbourne, via a gripping program for saxophone quartet and multimedia. The program is built around a world premiere Jacob has given to Niels and Axes Quartet: NUTS, a work commenting on the violent passing of George Flloyd through police brutality, and the global BLM movement it sparked.
Jacob has a stunning portfolio of works for all kinds of instrumentation and video, that are performed worldwide. He focuses mostly on current affairs, with either beautiful, celestial sounds, or harsh social commentary. He uses clips from news media or outspoken TV talkshows, which highlight the more excessive behaviours humans often display.
Short moments of tranquility are woven between the pieces, in the form of short videos created especially by the composer for this occasion.
