Here is a sublime collaboration between one of Australia’s finest sopranos and the pianists of ANAM, in a program which includes two glorious 19th century song cycles. If you love Grieg’s music for Peer Gynt or his piano concerto, you will be entranced by the songs he created about a young woman who is rejected by her lover and finds solace in nature and the powers of the underworld. When Grieg first read the poems which inspired these songs, he found that they were “already set to music – it was only a question of writing it down.” Schumann’s set of songs, charting the course of a woman’s relationship, from first meeting to death and beyond, is one of the great expressions of the Romantic spirit in music.
