In 1741 Rameau published five chamber works for harpsichord, violin and viola da gamba. To each work he gave the title ‘concert’, the French equivalent of the Italian ‘concerto’. Enchanting the ear with endless variety and novelty, the works are harpsichord concertos whose orchestral component has been reduced to an absolute minimum of one treble instrument and one bass instrument.A celebration of people, characters, places and popular dance, Accademia Arcadia’s performance featuring a mid-18th-century French harpsichord made by William Dowd of Boston in 1976 will captivate and transcend.
