These select musicians from the Gewandaus Orchestra bring with them an unmissable musicianship and carry a tradition unlike any other. The Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig is the world’s oldest orchestra, and this performance is the ultimate opportunity to witness some of Germany’s most in-demand musicians presenting an intimate performance of, and inspired by, Schubert’s Octet in F.
An exploration of a more intimate form of music-making, Schubert’s Octet with its warm yet heartfelt moments, was written at a time in the composer’s life when writing songs and symphonies was on hiatus. The result is a six-movement masterpiece that elegantly and carefully represents a cross-section of the symphony orchestra.
Opening the concert, and with inspiration from the Octet, is Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen’s arrangement of Schubert’s Six Moments Musicaux – originally written for solo piano, but in an arrangement especially commissioned for this Australian tour.
