Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony emerged as a masterful response to Stalin’s criticism of his earlier works. Whether interpreted as a public statement or subtle rebellion, the symphony captures the turbulence, despair, and triumph of its time with volcanic intensity.
Korngold, a celebrated Jewish émigré, found safety and success in Hollywood, where his music embodied the emotional exuberance of early cinema. Gifted with sparkling melodies, lush harmonies, and imaginative orchestration, Korngold brought a joyous spirit to his compositions. His Violin Concerto, featuring brilliant violinist Louise Turnbull, remains a beloved masterpiece.
Melbourne composer Miriama Young’s Daughters of Elysium also draws from the past, weaving Bach’s influences into her imaginative soundscape. The program opens with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.5, a spiritual declaration reaching an awe-inspiring climax.
