Melbourne Recital Centre & the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) Mostly Mozart – Mannheim to Paris
Mozart’s self-described best.
Musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), alongside director and ANAM horn alum Carla Blackwood, present a morning of music that unites winds and strings.
A 28-year-old Mozart considered the Quintet in E-flat one of his greatest works. This piece effortlessly balances wind timbres against piano in an ever changing sequence of melodic development. Written at the peak of his compositional powers, this ever-popular work, combining complexity with charming musical conversation, radiates with an alchemy that is distinctly Mozart.
The exploration of Mozart’s great works continues in his Quintet for Horn and Strings, which distinctly features just a single violin and cello, along with two violas. Breaking the traditional string quartet format, the addition of the two violas provides this stunning work with a blend of brightness and depth. This unique ensemble provides the perfect accompaniment to the star of the piece – the horn.
Receiving long overdue recognition, the 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc’s Sextet for winds and piano in C Minor is sandwiched between the two Mozart masters. Overflowing with warmth and appealing melodies, Farrenc’s intimate 20-minute work is a perfect addition for a morning of music that will enliven the spirit.
