One of only three choral works by Rachmaninov, the All-Night Vigil (or Vespers) stands at the pinnacle of the sacred music of the Russian Orthodox tradition. Rachmaninov’s transformation of traditional Orthodox chants through Romantic period harmony is unmatched in its beauty and technique. Melbourne Chamber Choir’s music director, Alan Cook, is a specialist in Russian repertoire and language and will direct this unique performance in Melbourne’s most beautiful Orthodox church, the very setting for which the work was composed.
