Hawthorn Arts Centre has secured the talent of SinoBeats and international guzheng star Mindy Meng Wang for its annual Lunar New Year celebration.
Illuminating Harmony is an exceptional concert in two parts that offers both traditional Chinese music and a contemporary East-meets-West fusion. Thirty accomplished musicians will align at Hawthorn Town Hall in constellations of duets, quartets and ensembles.
Opening with the Xingyun Ensamble of ten classical Chinese musicians offering loved cultural anthems, followed by pairings playing guqin, erhu, tang drum, guzheng and dizi. The Sinobeats ensemble delivers classic tunes with erhu, yangqin and guzheng.
The second session will see Mindy Meng Wang and her jazz ensemble add piano, cello, double bass and flute, taking the sounds to meet the Western influence of Jazz.
Renowned composer and master of the erhu, Paul Lv, contributes otherworldly virtuosity to the contemporary compositions.
Sherry Peng, guzheng player and Director of SinoBeats says the evening will enchant lovers of classical Chinese music and those new to the genre that already appreciate fine musicianship.
“We are thrilled to be able to explore so many facets of these traditions in one magical evening. The Hawthorn Arts Centre is a beautiful place to play and to experience great music of any genre.” Sherry Peng
