Kew Philharmonic Chamber Choir: Iberia: Renaissance Songs from the Iberian Peninsula
Iberia: Renaissance Songs from the Iberian Peninsula
Kew Philharmonic Chamber Choir directed by Stephen Kerr
These songs mostly in Castilian and Catalan seem to have been composed for, or sung in, the Valencian court of Ferdinand of Aragon, then also Duke of Calabria. The sixteenth-century Uppsala Songbook, discovered in the library of Uppsala University, is one of the best collections of Spanish Villancicos, a term meaning verses and choruses but now understood as Christmas carols. The songs, however, are more diverse, and include the playful, the love-lorn, and songs of consolation, as well as some carols. They will be accompanied by Cornetto, Sackbuts and Organ.
