The Star Chorale, led by Music Director Dr Kathleen McGuire, presents the acclaimed German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) by Johannes Brahms. With lyrics drawn from the Lutheran Bible, this work is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful choral works ever written, in which the idea of sympathy and comfort is a recurring theme. This performance will be sung in German.
Making her Melbourne Recital Centre debut will be one of Australia’s most exciting new opera talents – the Indigenous Wiradjuri soprano Shauntai Batzke, a developing artist with Short Black Opera Company, who is thrilling Australian and overseas audiences with her strong stage presence and luscious voice.
Ms Batzke will share the Recital Centre stage with established baritone Lucas de Jong, an Opera Australia regular who has sung with The Royal Opera Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the European Chamber Opera.
The two opera stars will be joined by the Star Chorale and orchestra, conducted by Dr Kathleen McGuire. With thirty years’ experience working with choirs, orchestras, and other ensembles in Australia and overseas, Dr McGuire was appointed as Music Director of the Kew-based Star Chorale at the beginning of 2017.
